1. Holla folks, just wondering if anyone here has had experience recently of ACS in-ears? Recently Mrs Simon. treated me to a set of in-ears to use as general headphones and for practicing at home. My old and much loved Sennheiser CX6's were starting to fall to pieces, albeit audio-wise they were still perfect, and a replacement was needed. A number of years back I got a set of ER-15 earplugs and they remain to this day the single best music related purchase I've ever made, so I was quite keen to go down the moulded route again. I decided on the ACS T1's, had the impressions done and waited a couple of weeks. Even though I was expecting and prepared for a different sound from what I was used to with the old CX6's, my disappointment on trying them was immediate! Decent clarity on vocals, but overall tinny and with no bass response at all. I tried A/B tests with my old headphones, and even a fairly cheap pair, and all had better response. I even felt that the right channel on it’s own was just about acceptable, but the left was unusable – real AM radio quality sound. So, back they went for a check over, especially as I, and others, felt that was a disparity between left and right. However, I received them back again this morning, with a note saying they couldn’t find anything wrong with them, and once again, IMO, they are just terrible. They suck the life out of anything, no bass response, and to be honest I’m not noticing any benefit of the supposed 26dB of isolation. Background noise levels are virtually identical with them in or out. So, does anyone know where I stand on getting a refund on these, considering they are a custom product? Also, I have wondered if they fit of the moulding might be somewhat to blame. They feel really comfortable to wear, but the lack of isolation makes me wonder if that might be the root cause. Any thoughts?
2. Damn, damn, damn! I've lusted after this bass since the days when OBBM had it! Why does it always resurface when I'm flat broke? Dave - do you still have the pearloid plate for it? It looked awesome with that on.
3.
Holy Mother of God, that's beautiful.
What he said.... That's an amazing bass Si. I hope someone buys it soon, otherwise I'm going to have to sell a kidney... Would love to have it, could never do it justice.
4. What's not to like about that!? Think they'll cover the air-fare's as well?
5.
They do ;-)
Oh dear. That's me struck down as well.... time to choose - do I reach for my wallet or the gaviscon....?
6. I like that at lot! His version of Rock 'n' Roll on a ContraBass is pretty awesome too - clearly a chap who enjoys his playing.
7. If he's struggling to hear himself on stage with that rig, then I think they need to start asking some serious questions about overall stage volume! Surely asking for long term hearing damage... Have heard a couple of Toseland tracks on the radio & quite liked them.
8.
Thanks Simon, Malcolm is actually playing accordion which he is amazing at he plays on the same track as Jerry. Denis is indeed the drummer and if truth be told the boss! He is the guy that keeps it all together. He is away with Runrig at the moment.
I have a very fond memory of Malcolm's accordion playing - I was filling in as guitar tech for a Runrig show in Denmark a few years back and was going through some stuff with Malc and re-stinging various guitars and basses. At the other end of the hall there was a second stage for a covers band who were on in the afternoon, and they were doing their set-up/soundcheck. At one point they started blasting out (a fairly decent version of) Whole Lotta Love and I became aware of Malc wandering about the stage with his accordion noodling along to some Led Zep. Good luck with the album, and say 'hi' to Denis when he's back.
9. I'm with you on that Bilbo! For a variety of reasons I'm currently I'm sans band and despite the enjoyment I get from playing at home, working stuff out and dabbling in writing, I hate not being out gigging. Hate it. My ex-sister-in-law is a very accomplished flautist, went through Guild Hall and was considered to be one of the top 5 players for her age when she graduated. Despite intending to make a living from music, she has never, ever played to an audience. Just bonkers, in my book.
10. Good luck with the campaign! And well done on getting Malcolm in on guitar. Aside from being a top fellow, I always thought he was massively underrated. Is Dennis still your drummist? I used to work with him now and again on Runrig shows & rehearsals.
11. "... Taking them out every year to watch the colours fade away?" A Gentleman's Excuse Me, by Fish How about: "Somebody broke your heart once before, yeah..."
12. Man. How I wish I had the cash for this. Having had a 75 RI Jazz, they are great basses, but I wanted a PJ & a rosewood board, so ended up creating a Bitsa which all-in probably cost more than this!
13. I got an Allparts licensed neck a couple of years back through eBay. RW, blocks & bound and it came in at just over £220 all in. It's been rock solid, and once I'd played it for a while I had Chris Macintyre re-shape it ever-so slightly to give it a profile more like the Fender Japan 75 RI’s. Feels great, plays lovely. For putting on a Bitsa bass, I can’t think of a better option.
14.
Bottom one, but with a white pearloid scratchplate.
This! IMO, with a natural finish, it has to be maple & pearl blocks all the way. Anything coloured, and it has to be rosewood and pearl blocks. Except possibly in the case of all black or all white, which can go either way. Binding essential, too.
15. Only on my squash racquet... Seriously though, I didn't even know Dunlop did instrument strings. Interested to see what people’s opinions are.
16. I'm surprised at the problems you've had with your Amplug. I've had mine for 4+ years and it's never been a bother. OK the sound quality isn't too great and there's more background noise than I would like, but for the money it's been fine. I looked at the Amphones, but would imagine them to be fairly similar in sound and build quality, and if you are prepared to spend that much, then I would definitely recommend shelling out a little bit extra and going for something like the SFX H1, which is a really decent bit of kit.
17.
Sorry but that bass has been recently cannibalised to provide a neck and pickups for a Precision build. So there are no further pictures. The neck and pickups are great but the weight of that (I assume) mahogany body was too much for me. By the way I bought it in 1984 and was the second owner. This is a video of me playing it in about 2001. Great sound.
Ha, small world moment - finally being able to put a face to a user name! Gareth, I used to do a lot of sound and stage work and worked with you & the Hyenas a number of times at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, particularly in the days when the uses to use the old Caledonian brewery for gigs. If I remember correctly, you used to have an awesome Tokai that always had a great sound. Fun times. Glad to know you are still playing (are the Hyenas going?). Cheers. Sorry for the thread hijack!
18. Years ago I went through a phase of breaking strings - all E's & A's. Fortunately it only ever happened at rehearsals and never on a gig. The particular brand of strings in question had step-down windings at the ball end, and all the breaks occurred at the bridge. Quickly moved on to another manufacturer, and have never broken another one since.
19. Really nice! Some bits with a very Ben Fold's Five kind of feel to them, but that's no bad thing in my opinion (and given the line-up, that's hardly a surprising comparision, either). Sounds like it was a lot of fun to play. Well done.
20. Japan Axe beat me to it, but I would definitely recommend checking out Vintage Trouble. Great on CD, superb live. Other recent stuff I've been liking would include: Alabama Shakes, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and also one I found on here a while back: the track by Q-Tip called Man Woman Boogie. As for older stuff, James Govan is a lesser known great (check out "Wanted: Lover" for some funky bass), Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes did some brilliant Philly soul. Producer Tom Moulton did a Philly Soul re-mix/re-master compilation last year which features 4/5 Bluenotes tracks, all of which are superb.
21. Nice to see that Laurence Llewelyn Bowen is still getting himself out and about these days... As for a Sunday air bass song, either of these two for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3TBmE2NkWY or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOcdHBRf0lg Both of which I would love to learn, but so far my ear just isn't good enough to keep up!
22. jackotheclown - did Carnival specify what the medical was? For working offshore/at sea, the standard medical certificate is the ENG1. Although there are slight variations for working in different sectors (Norwegian being one), they are all pretty similar. You can't get an ENG1 from every GP, only from one registered with the MCA. They are fairly easy to find though, and as machinehead said further up, it should cost you about £150. If Carnival are just looking for an ENG1, then the clinic in London is blatantly profiteering and I would report them, if they want a whole lot more than the standard medical, I would be asking why and for them to cough up for it.
23. Simon.

ding :(

I was devastated the day I put the first ding on my P-Lyte (at that point, the first 'proper' bass I'd owned). It was only on closer examination that I discovered there were half a dozen other minor dings and scuffs already in existence, and so became considerably more ambivalent about it! I was still a bit miffed that it was the first obvious mark on the front of the body, though. Heart-wrenching though it is, it all adds character!
24. That looks fabulous! Well done all involved. Fender Japan do a 75RI like this, but they call the colour Old Lake Placid Blue - it's a shade or two darker than what you have, and I have serious GAS for one - with a pearloid scratchplate to match the block inlays. There were good and (still) valid reason for moving on my 75RI, but I do miss that bass.
25. Mary had a long black skirt With a slit right up the side And when she wore it The boys could see her thighs... Mary had another skirt With a slit right up the front But she didn't wear that one very often!
