1. Thanks for the info folks. Bass Doc - that Duck Dunn bass is the inspiration, hence the considering a Lakland. Having played a Jazz for years (an prior to that a P-Lyte), I'm too accustomed to a thinner neck to wholly embrace a Precision. Plus I just love the look of the block inlays & bindings. I'm suspecting that retro-fitting a Jazz neck onto a P-body is going to be the solution. Cheers, Simon.
2. I've never used OBBM, but looking at the site, all the kit appears to be pretty standard. You can buy the parts yourself, or made up cables direct from Van Damme (vdctrading.com). Look to be about similar prices to OBBM, and I've had great service and reliability from them over the years, both for myself and kit supplied to touring bands I've tech'ed for.
3. Holla folks, One for those who know the histories of Fender better than me, but I was wondering if there was ever a stock model P-bass made which had a neck with block inlays and binding, as you see on many Jazz models? Am I being unrealistic in holding out hope of ever finding a Fender P-bass with a rosewood board and block inlays? Is something like the Lakland DD the most likely option? Cheers.
4. Oh Crivens, Temptation has just walked in though my door....
5. Hi all, I'm currently suffering a GAS attack for a P-bass, but having been a Jazz player for many years, would like to get one with the thinner neck. I was looking at something like a 70s re-issue (Japanese) or a 2nd Hand Duck Dunn Skyline - I'm just not at all keen on the CAR colour! However, having seen the block inlay & binding necks the Skylines have, I really want one. Does anyone know of a neck supplier who does a rosewood board with block inlays and binding? I'm beginning to feel a project build coming on.
6. I was going to recommend Musicguard as well - good customer service & a decent price compared to some other I looked at. However, having read the rest of this thread, I think I might be looking at Endsleigh when my cover is up for renewal! Shame it's not until December...
7. I was in the Edinburgh GuitarGuitar store a couple of weeks back looking at P-basses. At that point in time they had very little in stock because a lot of the new gear they were getting in from dealers and some of what they already had in stock was being packaged up to ship down to the new B'ham store. I would imagine there should be a good selection of stuff available. There was a very nice 2nd hand 2008 USA P-bass that was supposed to be going down as well, if anyone is looking for the like. Excellent condition, but sadly for me it had a maple board and I was after something with rosewood.
8.
firstly, anyone dealt with far east guitars, the website looks pretty professional secondly, what do you think of this http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedjb5.htm
Hi Currrls, I bought my 75 RI Jazz from John at Far East a couple of years ago. No problems at all with the transaction - plenty of communication and the bass turned up quickly, very well packaged and exactly as described. All in all, a great service and tom top it off, a really lovely bass! No complaints from me, and I'm currently considering asking him to source me a 70s RI Precision. Cheers.
9. That is a sick pair of basses! Excuse the smut, but really - what a lovely pair! The 72 P is really something special. Well done on getting that.
10. Hi folks, thanks for all the replies and info - much appreciated. I tried out a couple of new MIA Precisions over the weekend to get a feel for what the current models are like, and was very pleasantly surprised by them. I'm still not convinced they are value for money, but the neck size wasn't quite the monster experience I was expecting and the through-body stringing seemed to work quite well. The store I was in did have a 2nd hand, excellent condition 2008 model for a decent price, but it had a maple board, and I'm after a rosewood. Clarky, simon1964 & BurritoBass - the CIJ 70s re-issue is pretty much what I've had my eye on, but not having played a P-bass in a long while, I wondered what the current range of choices was like. Thanks for the tip about the neck size as well, as that was something I wondered about. There is a guy in Edinburgh who imports the CIJ Fenders, so I might see if I can pop along and try out a 70s RI. MIJ Fenders. Has anyone any experience using these guys? I got my 75 Jazz RI from John at Far East Guitars without any hassle, so the idea of buying on-line isn't too scary. Oh, and 0353203 - please don't tempt me with that gorgeous looking bass! I'm not sure my will power is up to resisting it! Thanks again folks.
11. Holla folks, looking for some advice on the potential purchase of a P-bass - a very emotive subject, I know. I currently have a CIJ 75 RI Jazz as my main bass, and frankly love it to bits. However, of late I've been getting a lot of calls to do blues/soul/r'n'b type work, and feel the need to add a P-bass to fit the style slightly better. Plus, let's be honest here, I've always fancied having one! So, what are folks opinions on the best route to go for a good p-bass? I've been very impressed with the quality of all the CIJ re-issue stuff I've seen, but never too keen on the MIM gear (unless it's improved dramatically in the last couple of years). Not sure I think the MIA stuff justifies the extra price tag compared to the Japanese basses, and have no worries going down the 2nd-hand route if the right bass comes along. Budget is probably in the £800 ball-park, although if the right thing comes along, there is room for manoeuvre, providing Mrs Simon. doesn't find out... Thoughts and opinions welcome! Cheers.
12. Recently decided to work out Never Forget You by the Noisettes as I really liked the song, and discovered it to be astonishingly simple! A great feel and good fun to play.
13. I was seriously tempted to get one a while back, but opted for a CIJ '75 RI Jazz - which is a really fantastic bass. Has only played both the RI 75 and then Geddy Lee and come up with a comparison between the two? Would be interested to see what (if anything) I missed out on. Cheers.
14. Interesting thread! Something I specifically put in my will last time it was updated is what happens to all my music kit once I shuffle off this mortal coil. Basically it all goes to the missus (assuming she is still here by then), who can then hand on to my two boys anything they would like to have - and are actually going to use! All the rest goes back to the music department of my old high school who had a lot of time, guidance and support for me when I was first starting out.
15. If all you kit is up to scratch (which it sound like) and this is happening with varied amps and basses both active & passive, and given that you mention there are other suspect electrics in the house, I would suggest that there is something dodgy with the mains earthing somewhere in the two houses. Most likely it's floating and acting as a transmitter when you play, which also means your gear isn't properly earthed when you are using it... I would certainly try to get in front if the old chaps radio and hear the effects for yourself. If it is the house electrics, you need to make sure you get a hold of your landlord and tell him the electrics need looked at - it's not something you can afford to take lightly. If he balks at the idea, just tell him you'll bill him for any damage to your gear.
16. Hi there, I picked up a 2nd-hand MIJ '75 re-issue Fender Jazz from John Blackman at >> Far East Guitars <<, a couple of years ago, and can have absolutely no complaints about it. US pick-ups, top notch craftsmanship, plays wonderfully, and is comfortably well under your £1000 budget. Having compared it against a couple of USA made versions of the '75 re-issues, I fail to see what justifies the added expense of the American model. Cheers.
