Thanks for bringing my slack capitalisation to my attention. I'll try not to let it happen again! Good info on the memory too, it does have 4 memory slots, so 4x 2GB would be doable in the future. All the I.T. spods at work are also agreeing that ssd will make a lot of difference in performance. I'll see how I get on for the time being, I suspect big upgrades would be better spent on a higher level starting point.

I could easily go out and get a whizz bang p c and all the attendant gubbins, but as brx has said in another thread, Spending the dough doesn't guarantee results, and it can be more of a learning experience when you work under constraints. We'll see about that! (Look out for a new pc thread in the middle distance... )

Ok, got w10 on it and 4G ram. I have 2 drives now. System is on c:, d is presently empty 200 G. Should I put Reaper on C: and store audio on d: or put Reaper on d: too, or doesn't it make much difference? Additionally, would adding an old graphics card take a bit of load off the processor, bearing in mind the processor and ram ain't all that. Thanks for your thoughts.

The early Epi I played was a 335 style, the pickups weren't exactly weak, they just sounded woolly and indistinct. The rest of it seemed ok.

I thought the early 90s Epi were meant to have quite poor pickups?

Through my 1x10, I don't think it was quite loud enough to stay clean with our drummer. I think it's only 25W into 8 ohms. Tried the Orange micro Terror too, similar results. Nice gig at the Jericho in Oxford. We played a short set, then the unusual Pink Diamond Revue, then we backed up the excellent Anton Barbeau, who went down a storm. The evening started with Laima Bite (pronounced Bitta, I think), a singer songwriter with a most enchanting voice, and dark songs. One of the regulars said it was the best Thursday in a year there.

I liked the play of the day, sometimes brought to notice things I'd missed on first listen. Still waiting for my back-reviews, when you feel up to it

I'm with you on this - it's the journey, not the destination. Like you, my ideas, especially for the drums, outstrip my ability to perform them by so far. One time I might get our drummer to play on one of them, that should be a quantum leap in performance quality!

Another thing I find about this challenge is that I tend to do it all very quickly (this month's was 1 session of about 3-4 hours, most of that trying to decide what to play on the drums, and how!), and not redoing any of the takes, and when I come to listen again some days or weeks later, it's almost as if I'm listening to work by someone else, which somehow makes it more interesting for me to listen to, as I can't remember much about the process, unlike recording demos with the band, where you get sick of the tune after all the overdubs and tweaking the mix. Is this just me or do others find this too? Apologies for the ridiculously long sentence above btw
