1.
I saw this at the Bracknell jazz festival in 1984.... blew my mind. 2 of my favourite bassists.
I was there too! Great stuff. I do miss those Bracknell Festivals, such a nice setting and atmosphere.
2.
The problem is, there's tort and there's tort. Most modern tort is rubbish and looks like sliced salami. The only acceptable tort is genuine period vintage tort OR Spitfire tort. The 3-D tort that looks as if you could lose yourself in it... Mmmm, real tort... https://spitfiretort...res-and-styles/ And then only on a white, cream, vintage white or sunburst bass... and possibly Shoreline or Firemist Gold under certain circumstances. Tort should never be seen on any sort of blue, black, green, purple or red bass. With the possible exception of Fiesta Red, but only if its VERY faded. Edit. IMHO, of course.
Some of the Spitfire ones do look nice, but, crikey, they are not inexpensive!
3.
Presumably the new switchable version of these cabs will remain at the same price as the "old" ones?
Why would you presume that? If there's more gubbins in it and an extra feature, I'd expect it to cost a little more, not be the same.
4. Played Ships in the Night on my first ever public gig at the tender age of 17. Happy days
5. Are you sure they are both 9V AC? I can't see why they would state centre negative if it was AC. But all other things being equal, I don't think it would quite have the power. It may only work at lower volumes, or may not start up properly if there is a lot of microprocessor gubbins in te amp. If it does work, I think the power supply would run too hot and might fail rather soon.
6. One of the tags on the volume pot isn't connected to ground properly? May be a dry solder joint if it is bent back and soldered on to the pot body.
7. Well, they sent one correct socket, but sent 2 of the 9V power inputs instead of the loop and output sockets (different footprint to the input), called them up and they rectified it straight away. Mistakes do happen, but they dealt with it very efficiently, and the repair is all good now!
8. Check out one of the long standing local covers bands: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/leisure/musics/music/10616159.Pete_Fryer_Band__Still_rocking_out_after_a_near_50_year_music_career/ Note the leather trousers for completion of the ensemble...
9. Hmm, I see what you mean.
10.
We have a rule in our band, more of a law actually. No hats and no waistcoats. Nothing screams "Late middle aged rocker" more than those two items. And yes I am 65, and bald.
+1, so true
11. So, Bilbo, what's in store this month for our pictorial inspiration?
12. Just spoke to Marshall spares dept, parts are £1.47 + Vat and postage, same day dispatch. So far, I'm impressed with the service, lets hope the correct bits arrive! Their number is 01908 375411 If anyone is interested, and they get back from lunch at 13.15
13. Sounds plausible
14. They're usually around 85% efficient, so that's about 15 watts of power per 100 watts of output power to get rid of in the form of heat. The lower power ones can get away with convection cooling. With a fan, you can use smaller, lighter heatsinks, so shrinking the footprint of the amp.
15. Thanks, but the footprint is wrong for the pcb.
16. Hi all got one of the above in a very sorry state, needs all the jack sockets replacing. They are low-profile pcb mount, 2 with 9 pcb mounting pins, one with 5. I think i may have found something on ebay, but in Hong Kong. Anyone know of similar in the UK, my Google force is weak today! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391496162449?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true Cheers MBA
17. I use one of the inexpensive Studiospares d.I. boxes on the speaker out of my 15W Ashdown valve amp and it works a treat. It has a 3-way attenuator so you have a nice choice of levels to send to a desk or recorder. The speaker just plugs in to the through socket. I think it's good for at least 60W amps, iirc. https://www.studiospares.com/Microphones/DI-Boxes/Studiospares-Dual-Passive-DI-Box_449300.htm
18. What do you sprinkle on your cereals Jack?
19.
I left another band because said "please don't do X, it really annoys me". Singer proceeded to do X thinking it funny. I said "don't do X". Next he did it onstage where he knew I could not respond... So that was it really. We played one more gig I had booked and I left and the band never played
We all REALLY want to know what x is now!
20. Ralph Towner. Solstice.
21. It always strikes me as a particularly stupid way to ascribe pickup positions.
22. It's where I live.
23. I bought one on behalf of a friend and didn't want it give it to him! I think they're fine as they are, I always wanted to pick it up.
24. I would choose the things you clamp it with to have a very smooth surface, and be larger than the guards, as a textured surface may leave an indelible impression under heating, and an unwanted line if smaller than the guard. It sounds obvious, but one of these has happened to me I seem to remember getting a good outcome using a hairdryer with a guard still screwed to the body. This would have been on a poly finish, not nitro. Good luck!
