1.
always good to have drummers' opinions on stuff.
But only when they're asked for...
2. I thought Cowell's joke that they'd put him through to the next round was the highlight of the evening. A throwback to the days when talent really did matter..but yes, past his best now.
3. Just acquired a G&L L1000 with flats, courtesy of Guzzibass, and that definitely has a darkness neither of my Precisions can give me. The OMG pickup switch position, I believe it's called...
4. Yes, top man to deal with, as I did last week - no problems whatsoever.
5. I have a Seventies Precision and a wife who beat cancer this year - I thought I was the lucky one, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone. All the best, my friend!
6. My son, who doesn't live with me, is getting a bass for Xmas. Any recommendations as to a book or DVD that would be useful to him would be welcome. He's left handed, if that makes any difference. Does it? Thanks all. Mick
7. The Supremes & Arthur Conley @ Croydon Fairfield Halls. 1971. excellent. Followed by Cliff Richard (at first girlfriend's insistence) and Suzi Quatro!!
8. The one bit he doesnt show is the headstock! What's on it, I wonder?
9. No, it';s a Hamer isn't it? I bought the wrong bass... Thanks for this though! I sent a cassette single version of this song to a girl I fancied, and it worked
10. He was cool. Seeing him playing (I think) a Guild B301 painted like the Japanese flag (memory fading) in 1980 made me want to be a bass player. Thanks for the reminder. I tried to set up a Pretenders-style band, and one of the potential frontwomen was Eddi Reader. Always got at (not) spotting talent, me...
11. In case anyone's interested, Chris told me this about his Elektra a couple of years ago: 'It¹s a bass that was a favourite of mine made for me in the 70s by I guess what¹s now some (Westone/St Louis Music) music company which I guess makes Ampeg and they made Alvarez guitars the acoustics which was one of those lines. But they were also experimenting with electric guitars and this was a custom made bass which they made for me that actually has effects modules that you pop, into the back of the bass, there¹s a little flap. And although I don¹t always use the effects the guitar is one of those very playable basses which I enjoy playing and has a great sound. I¹ve always had it in my arsenal, as it were.'

14. Excellent player - believe I saw him with the original Isotope. RIP Jeff.
15. Thanks for this. He played with my all time fave guitarist, Micky Jones.
16. Not very packed, which is not surprising as half mid Sussex has been flooded or blown over! Oh well, back in January by which time it will probably be snowing...
17. My wife and I are in tears (of laughter) at this televisual feast....
18. What a thread I started! As for seeing em live, I had a ticket for the aborted 1974 tour when they peed off back home halfway thru - my pal saw them in London and continually reminded me what I'd missed! The I saw them in 2000 and, yes, musically impeccable but not exactly exciting.
19.
one way of interpreting what you seem to be saying is... 'it's too difficult for me therefore I won't like it'
I think my original post was wondering if the camps divide between those like me who prefer the commercially appealing stuff my non-musician fans like and those (some on here) who go weak at the knees for a complex bassline regardless of song quality. I'm also aware some of us play Dan material for a living, so am interested in their take. Also, as a side issue, was Becker a limited bassist? Or did he just play what suited the song?
20. I'm treating myself this morning to playing their first three albums right the way through as I work. The Dan get much praise here, but mostly for their later more complex work which can't hold a candle to Can't Buy A Thrill, Countdown To Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic. What's more they have bass lines I can actually attempt to play, as opposed to the complex finger-twisters of later years. Was it when Becker stopped playing bass that this happened? Or am I alone...
21. Forget the basses, I'm still getting over the pic of Harry Potter in a wig!
22. Ah, so this is the one on Ebay....
23. I had 10 minutes in Jon's 'presence' a few years ago (three way interview) and wasn't hugely impressed. If Hughie can go places burly security men at his shoulder then he's got the best end of the deal. Youda thought JBJ was Bill Clinton or somebody....
