1. Just sold Lee a pickup, good comms, swift payment, and advised when item received. Great transaction all round.
2. Drop Aguilar an e-mail, their customer service is great, I`ve contacted them a couple of times re spare parts and they`ve replied very quickly advising where to source them from. [email protected]
3. I think ABBA would have been popular whenever they came out. Although primarily a 70s band their sound doesn`t really link into either the glam of the early 70s, or the punk of the late 70s, just great tunes, with even better harmonies. That to me is real pop - when it`s virtually timeless in comparison to whatever else is current at the time.
4. I have nostalgia for 3 basses that I`ve had: Yamaha BB1100s - my first "proper" bass. A real workhorse, did loads of gigs on it, probably 500 or so without a backup, played and sounded great. But I wouldn`t use one nowadays as the look is too 80s. Gibson Les Paul Bass, in red sunburst - was great this one, but the sound wouldn`t suit what I currently need. Really deep, warm, rich sound, was great in my old sleaze-rock band, great Nikki Sixx rumbling at the low-end. Fender 51 Precision Reissue in the blonde/black combo. Love the look of these basses, and they sound pretty good too, but for me I`d be getting one purely for the look of how cool I think they are. So I`m not gonna get any of them again, though they are the three that I look back fondly on.
5. Never got to see The Clash, and in my early years as a devoted Pistols fan never wanted to. Only learned to appreciate them a few years after they`d split. Some great songs, but some pretty awful ones too. But imo that`s not an issue, I don`t have to listen to the awful ones, and love the great ones.
6. Yeah, I`ve bought used flats mainly, but some do like old knackered rounds.
7. If looking at hard cases Hiscox always get my vote.
8. I`m glad that vinyl is selling well, our first album has just been released on both black and red vinyl, by Step 1 Records, and our second album is due to be released very soon on both black and blue vinyl, by Randale Records. Boasting time, said 2nd album has just been voted the 23rd best album of 2016 in Vive Le Rock magazine. Am I chuffed or what?
9. Try half-turns, and do half-turn in on the E/A side, and a half-turn out on the D/G. Repeat if necessary, you shouldn`t need too many to get there.
10. Agreed, my AG500 in a shallow-rack case is easiliy doable, as are the GK RB amps. I also agree that they do have a bit more substance to the sound. My TH500 is a great amp, and probably one of the meatiest sounding class D amps I`ve had - and there have been many - but against the AG500 there is a difference.
11.
You could PM Lozz196 and talk to him. He's playing Punk through a Barefaced Big Twin and (what's it now?) an Aguilar TH500?
Yep Barefaced Big Twin II and either an Aguilar Tonehammer 500 or AG500, Chris. The difference in using the BT2 compared to other cabs is pretty amazing. A couple of weeks back I used an Ashdown 410 cab, loved the sound, but my volume was about 12 o`clock, and the clipping light was coming on throughout most of the set. Similarly I used a Hartke VX115 a few weeks back and again my volume was 12 o`clock, if not more. With the BT2 I have the volume on about 9 or 10 o`clock and the clipping light never shows. I play some pretty large stages - all with FOH/monitors, but I prefer to not have my bass in the monitors, and my set-up is plenty for what I do. So I`d look at higher efficiency cabs here, that Peavey 450 should be plenty enough with an efficient cab (cabs). There was a Barefaced BT2 on here for about £900ish, great deal that, and at 50lbs it`s an easy cab to shift. I have a bad shoulder/upper back and the design of this 2x12 makes it so easy to move around. If the Peavey 450 is too heavy, well many different amps to go for, an idea of whether you like clean or gainy sounds will help us to advise.
12. Not wanting to play devils advocate but could some of this be that pro-bands simply have had the time and opportunity to really work out their sound that goes to FOH so that their gear is used to it`s maximum potential? Paul - I think we lucked out at Skegness, I saw a vid on youtube and we sounded pretty good on that. I suppose being a 3-piece not to much to go wrong, but as we`re happy to say you can`t polish a t*rd
13. Apologies for late reply, they don`t have enough top-end for what I need (I need a lot of obnoxious twang). They`re good, much toppier than any other flats I`ve used, and probably if they were on a Jazz or a Stingray there would be plenty enough highs, just not quite enough on my Precision.
14. Was that the one in Skegness at start of October, Paul? If so we played there on the Friday (we were on the Introducing Stage, and won the competition entry to the Main Stage next year).
15. Same way of thinking as Phil, for me.
16. On some combos they have a jack-plug socket for adding in another extension cab but looking at the manual for the BA115HP it doesn`t appear that there is one, so the answer would be no. Adding in another speaker makes the sound a lot better - especially if adding in the same speaker again - as you`re essentially doubling up so whilst not necessarily louder the sound is much "bigger/fuller". A head and cab is a good idea (or possibly two identical cabs, one for rehearsals, both for gigs), as is a combo and a matching extension speaker cab. It all depends on your needs really, so many different parameters to choose from.
17.
Out of interest, I wonder how many of you above are members of original bands? The reason I ask is that (IME) the role of each member is much more clear-cut and constant in a covers band. With an original band, things tend to evolve and therefore roles have to also evolve, or new people have to be brought in to carry out those newly evolved roles... Some members might grow increasingly uncomfortable with their new (or changed) role. That was certainly my experience in my last band. Is this making sense?
Originals band for me. Can see where you`re coming from as it depends on how the band - and band members - want to approach things, and with the different opportunities that may arise as more success comes along.
18. Yep, the majority of the gigs my band do there is either a provided backline or we all liaise as to which band brings what, to speed up changeovers and maximise on-stage time. That`s why I get all my eq/sound from pedals, no matter what rig I`m using and how it sounds on stage I know that the audience are getting what I wnat them to have FOH.
19. We`ve supported a good few named bands, and I actually like the ones who spend forever sound-checking, as once it`s our turn the on-stage sound is usually superb. They`ve done all the work and we benefit - plus invariably it`s a band I like so I get to hear them playing a lot as well. I still liaise with the sound-person as well though.
20. Bassist of course, and with blinding backing vox. But I also print the set-lists, book any hotels that are needed and largely look after the travel aspects, what time we need to be departing, sorting routes etc. I also liaise with the sound-person at each gig as to what the band line-up is, what monitor requirements we have etc. I do the hotels and travel stuff as the singer/guitarist does all the gig bookings and social media stuff, and the drummer handles all the merch sales (his wife attends all gigs so does the gig merch sales). Having worked all over the place I`ve a pretty good knowledge of routes and how long it takes to get to places. I`m also probably the person in the band that`s more into the workings of the sound, hence me looking after monitor requirements.
21. Looking very likely that I`ll be going to see The Last Resort at The 100 Club, London, this coming Friday.
22. I do like that Olive Green, looks nice with black pickguard and reckon it would be great with tort.
