1. If I just used a generic Precision tone I wouldn`t bother with pedals, but I need mine to get the sound I use as many amps can`t do it. I can just about get away with only using a Sansamp.
2. I love being in a band - even when there are issues in said band I prefer being in a band to not being in one. Luckily my current band has no issues at all, which I have to admit is the first band I`ve been in that is like that.
3. For a long time I had Barefaced Super12Ts, was perfectly happy with them, but GAS beckoned so sold them on and got a Barefaced Retro Two10 & Four10 so I could have "a stack". Unfortunately these didn`t work out for me - nothing wrong with them, and if I were doing anything other than what I`m currently doing, which needs gain/drive and high top-end twang, I`d happily have kept them. So I did the research and ordered a Barefaced Big Twin 2. Picked it up a few weeks back, and finally got to use it with the band last night. Compared to the Super12T which is the sound I want back, the BT2 is less middy, and has greater low-end. Additionally I always used the S12T without the tweeter, but using the BT2 without the mid-freq cone there aren`t enough highs/mids coming across, so that has to be on. So with everything on full/set to kill, I plundered forwards. Backing off of the lows slightly and upping the mids and highs slightly and my sound was there/back. I`d say the BT2 is a very flat-sounding cab, with no emphasis on any particular area of the sound, what you put in comes out. This to me is great as I can be even more sure that the sound I set for on-stage is what goes to FOH, as it`s rare we do a gig without FOH. Another plus-point is the BT2 is bigger than the S12T so on-stage, with my amp on top it`s not dwarfed by the guitarists Marshall half-stack - image (of gear) is still important on some scenes. I know there will be clamours of "no pics" and yes I will sort some, but just wanted to put down that the BT2 is an immense cab and I`m very pleased with it. I`m aware this may seem like a "but he`s not raving about it" sort of thread, but I find that when I`m raving about something it can sometimes mean I`m trying to kid myself about it, but when I quietly accept that I really like something it`s the real deal, and the BT2 is.
4. There is a thread on here about Bass Direct where it seems more than a few have experienced similar. I might add I didn`t when I went there, but that`s only because I don`t think they even noticed me in there - I`m only 6ft/13stone, so not that easy to see apparently.
5. I think it might be something to do with the gain on the amp being set a bit too high, so when you dig in you get this. I encountered something similar with a Gallien Krueger MB amp, if I pushed the gain too high, when I hit a string hard, especially the E or A, it sounded like the speaker was hitting a brick wall and the note ended very abruptly.
6.
That's what I was thinking. Is a MIA 'guard easy to change? I've looked online, as there's a million different versions!
I`ve just ordered one from Thomann for my at-home-Precision, a proper Fender replacement part. They`re about £40 but the quality is much better than the ones you can pick up for £15 or so, plus the Fender ones have the cut-out for truss-rod adjustment. I`m replacing a tort one as although I love tort, my other two Precisions are black/black/maple and the OCD is taking hold. Great bass btw (well I would say that seeing as I have two of them).
7. Beautiful Dangerous by Slash/Fergie from Black Eyed Peas. Awesome track.
8. Yeah of course, Sami Yaffa and his white T-bird, probably the coolest looking bassist of all time.
9. Currently using an Aguilar AG500 or Aguilar Tonehamer 500, Pete. The Ampeg was great but if anything too solid and rich for what I need. It seems that the amps that I really like when hearing others use them aren`t the ones I need for my band - hence not using Ampeg or Ashdown, even though these are my faves. I need a much more aggressive tone, which differs greatly from what I like to hear when listening to a band.

Congrats, probably makes that there Markbass amp sing - every time I`ve heard a Markbass amp through a BF cab it`s sounded amazing, irrespective of what bass is being used.
11. Yep I was looking into Aggie 212s and the above is pretty much how everyone described them, the GS being a bit more hi-fi/modern, whereas the DB has a more vintagey sound to it.
12.
I can't get on with Roto strings, they just go dead too quickly, have you tried Elites Lozz?
I have Pete, nice but no other brand that I`ve tried - yet - can quite get that Roto sound. Elites I found to be quite close, as are DR Fat Beams and Dean Markley Blue Steels but Rotos still edge it for me. It just gets on my nerves that they die so quickly.
13. Coming over all Nikki Sixx on us eh, Tim?
14.
I just did my first rehearsal with EBMM Cobalt Flats. Sounded brilliant this morning- loads of fundamental with a lively bite at the top. Very happy!
That`s good to hear as I`ve just ordered a set for my "at home bass"
15. In my band we`re currently "on-hold" waiting for the singer to have a stent put in his heart. As such haven`t picked up my gigging bass since, well our last gig at the start of October, have just been playing my "at home bass". Anyway, as things are looking likely we`ll be back to gigging at the end of this month I`ve just put a new set of strings on my gigging bass as I have a pretty free weekend, and was amazed at the difference in set-up compared to my at home bass. Both are the same bass, 2015 US Standard Precision, but the height of the strings and the neck-relief are so much more on the gigger - probably cos I tend to hit very hard live. Anyone else do this, have basses set up differently, fo different reasons/uses? Btw I have an at home bass so I don`t have to swap strings too often, I get about a month out of a set of Rotos on the gigger, if I used that one at home as well I`d probably only get about 2 weeks from them.
16.
Had a word with Alex about it and apparently he thinks the Midget T is arguably a better match for the Super Compact than the original Compact
In that case it will be awesome - I had a Gen 2 Midget/Compact set-up and that was great, so if Alex reckons this pairing will be better, well be prepared for a very daft grin that lasts for the whole rehearsal.
17. Possibly a live version, if they de-tune so the singer can get his vocals in range, but I`ve only ever heard it in F.
18. Interesting, I`d not heard that - and luckily for me also not experienced it from my own TH as I`ve DI`d many times from it.
19. Just sold Col a Barefaced Retro Four10. He came in with a suitable offer, and then collected the same afternoon. Good transaction.
20. A very long trip is all I can say. Hopefully I`ve got to the end of it, as was pretty much there, did a swap of gear and found that I preferred the previous. So my rig now consists of Fender Precision strung with Rotosound Steel Rounds, into a Sansamp Bass Driver, into an Aguilar Tonehammer Preamp Pedal, into an Aguilar AG500, into a Barefaced Big Twin 2. This way I can DI to FOH knowing that what I hear is what they`ll get too, plus I can use the pedals with provided rigs. Its funny but every time I go for the more traditional sounding gear - which is what I`ve preferred throughout my playing history - I realise that for the band I`m in I need a much clearer/cleaner set-up, bizarrely so that the gain/drive I use comes across properly. The more vintagey/traditionally voiced gear seems to colour the sound too much. The only thing that`s steered me other than trying gear out myself was when we recorded our second album. The producer put a Sansamp in the line and although up to that point I hadn`t been using one i thought seeing as we went to him specifically for his sound/production I`d go with it - and what a good move that was. Went straight out and bought one after that. Soundwise, well I suppose it`s somewhere between JJ Burnell, Bruce Foxton & Duff McKagan. Gainy, driven, with a lot of top-end twang on it so that when the guitar solos the backside of the song doesn`t drop out.
21. I look after my basses, unless being used my gigging ones are kept in cases, but if a ding happens it`s legit road-wear so I`m not going to be fussed.
22. I don`t know about the techie stuff too much Col, but I pair these cabs together into a 4ohm amp and they`re fine. It was Alex at BFHQ that advised me to go down this route if using a 4ohm amp. I remember reading a post that another Basschatter, Jennie Innie put up, about pairing a 12ohm Retro Two10 with a BF Compact - she put up a soundclip and it was pretty nice.
23.
That is rotten! I've only had good luck with GAK, so I'm sure they will put it right.
Same here, they`ve been very helpful with me over the years.
24. A shame but I think he`s made the right decision. I`m just gutted that I never got round to seeing Quo with the pair of them. I`m sure musically they`ll still be as good, but Quo really is Francis & Rossi (plus Rhino I suppose, he`s been there for years now).
25. Without thinking about it I couldn`t say how many times each bit was repeated but I could easily play our whole set solo.
