My guess would be Fenders too. What is the tension like? I found Fenders quite stiff but liked the tone.

Does Your Covers Band Change Songs? What Changes and Why?
chris_b replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
I've played in many bands where the band leader hadn't bothered to learn the song properly. Trying to get them to change just causes grief, so I shrug my shoulders and play their version. I played with one idiot who couldn't get the arrangements right from one gig to the next! Several times his " impromptu changes" caught me out and it was very annoying to be told that I needed to learn the songs!! Apart from him it was a good band, with good songs and good players, so I stuck it out. In cover bands I prefer to be playing the original because IME they never rehearse, so it's better that everyone sits at home learning the original arrangement and it's easier for deps to seamlessly fit in. -
Mine stopped working years ago...unrecognised by two Sony Blu-ray players and a couple external BD drives. I was royally pissed; the only BR or DVD that just stopped working.

Fair comments and some interesting points. It doesn't alter my contention that Tesco et al are profiting from donations made by customers if customers buy items at full price. Stores actually benefit financially from donating food that is at use-by or best-before dates, because they don't have to pay for disposal (commercial waste collection is charged for). Those dates are very conservative, because stores don't want to risk being sued by people who don't observe them. The first place I head for in any supermarket is the yellow sticker aisle. Some of the stuff I buy doesn't actually get eaten until well after the date and I'm not dead yet. Just follow the "Does it smell OK and/or is there green fur on it?" rule. Surely the nature of any out of date items put in boxes by the public is important. Use-by and best-before dates are a legal requirement in the UK. On things such as dry pasta and canned goods, they are pretty arbitrary. I have eaten things that, according to the label, are months or even years out of date with no ill effects. If the food distribution model in the UK is fundamentally broken, a good proportion of the blame should be laid at the feet of the mega-supermarkets.

Ooh. Yes I do have it. Haven’t watched it for a while. I will report back.

I've had three Peaveys: a Grind BXP 6, a Grind BXP 5, and a Zephyr C5. Both Grinds were 35" scale, the Zephyr was 34". String spacing on the Zephyr was 16mm, on the Grind 5 16.5mm, and on the Grind 6 a rather tighter 15.5mm. Sticker added for cosmetic purposes: The Zephyr had a slightly fatter neck than the Grinds - that went first, the other two later.

Does Your Covers Band Change Songs? What Changes and Why?

Depends on whether we think a change is needed or even whether, in our humble opinion, a change improves a song. The average pop song is not a work of great literature. It isn't sacrosanct. If changing it in some way improves it for your purposes, go for it. -
This, or the Bas Extravaganza Punk Bass would be the instrument I would want to bring to any gig where I was told to use a Precision.

If you want to try different flavours of sound eg drive, octave down, tremolo, chorus, phaser which can work well with different songs, then a budget multifx can be a very cost effective way to do that. A Zoom B1-4 is an excellent entry-level multifx, offering an excellent built in tuner, plus drums, looper and headphones out for home practice. Other budget multis e.g. the recently released Valeton GP-50 are getting some favourable comments from fellow BC'ers too.

RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE started following WTAF??

I like that ..but not in sunburst ! If it were about £800 max and in yellow , orange or green I’d have to track one down . I remember roughly around 15-20 years ago this design and the cheese bass / guitars were mentioned in a bass guitar magazine . Inflation and rarity has pushed the price up somewhat .

I don't like mixing cone types - not even different models of just 10s or just 12s etc. I always find that the perfect EQ for one cab / speaker is not the same as for the other so there's always a compromise that cannot be dialled out - at least not without cross overs or a completely different amp feeding each cab. If it was me, I'd pick the cab I liked best and just get another of the same. No compromises then and also no option paralysis in choosing which one to take on a smaller gig when only 1 is needed. It's not going to sound awful by any stretch of the imagination, but it might not sound exactly as you want. If you are relaxed about that - then no problem. Give it a try and see what happens - nothing will go wrong and your band mates won't even notice as long as they aren't asked to help you carry!

Great sounding preamp, had one for a while. Similar to a clean Fender Bassman or Alembic F1 preamp with the passive tone stack, but can add a little bit of valvey goodness when you crank the gain up. I heard somebody recently describe a similar preamp as "juicy" which summed it up quite nicely while telling you absolutely nothing!!!

Here we have a Kala U bass 5 string solid body which has the Kala gig bag which come with it. These are just incredible for their size and punch well above their weight in sound and this 5 string version is excellent. Light, compact and so easy to play, just needs a new home where it will be played more. Plastic still on pick guard, so it’s just about immaculate at less than half the price. I have the box it was shipped in so can post it - UK only though.

Sorry it hit a nerve! If organisers are using 'for charity' as a guise to get free bands for their own benefit, then that's a distinctly different situation to playing to support a genuine fundraiser. Definitely agree that if an event is being listed as 'for charity', then it should be really clear who and why etc, and the event should centre on that. If there's uncertainty about where money is going, then it's understandable that folk would want their fair cut. Maybe I've got a blindspot to this, as I work mostly in the charity sector, we're always really explicit about what we're doing and why. And so I'd expect it to be a clear, non-pressured decision on donating time or not. I can see how bad actors might exploit this though.

My teacher did sort of convince me to try and get more into classical stuff as there is so much to choose from and can see how the theory/progression developed over time, and with a few examples he demonstrated how the concepts can often be applied to pop and rock music. Although I suppose he didn't convince me enough as I'm going for 'Tarantella Twist', 'Always with Me (from Spirited Away)' and 'The Muppet Show Theme' for Grade 3 pieces so all from the last 50 years and not particularly classical!
