Bass not cutting through? Loudness could be the answer
gjones replied to Phil Starr's topic in Amps and Cabs
I know a guy who used to play a USA Musicman Sterling. At soundcheck it always sounded pretty horribly middy but once the band started playing, through the FOH PA, it always sounded excellent. -

I bought this new in April last year, using it briefly before discovering GR Bass. As such, everything is in mint condition and I still have the original boxes too so shipping is an option. This is an incredibly versatile amp, so much so that I couldn't possibly run through everything it can do here. There are lots of video reviews worth watching, but I am going to guide you to our very own Dood's review here, which gives a good deep dive into the amp. Boss Katana 500 Bass Head (£734) Boss BT-DUAL Bluetooth adapter (£45), so you can adjust settings on the fly via the app Boss GA-FC pedal (£99)l, again, for ease of switching in a live setup Boss VE-22 Vocal Processor Bag (£74), a perfect fit for the amp, power lead and a couple of speaker cables I’ve added some pictures taken today but forgot to add proof of ownership. Hopefully folks will know I am a stand up guy on here and save me the effort of retaking the pictures.

Headrush 112's Surface marks but overall good condition, one with a cover. I've used these for home practice, standalone amps for gigs and bass monitors while playing in a rock band and they've been great, but have my eye on setting else. I also have a couple of speaker pole stands, and a short XLR to daisy chain them that you can have for free if you take both. Reduced to £175 Collection from Nottingham NG5 or I can meet within 30/45mins drive Scott Blurrrrrb: The HeadRush FRFR-112 is a lightweight 2000-watt full-range, flat-response powered cabinet that perfectly complements your HeadRush Pedalboard, Gigboard, or any other multi-FX/amp modeler to give you a realistic room-filling sound with the authentic feel of a speaker pushing air. Bass not cutting through? Loudness could be the answer
Stub Mandrel replied to Phil Starr's topic in Amps and Cabs
Damn you folks, sent me onto a deep dive where I found this, which is a partial and imperfect answer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weber–Fechner_law As a biologist I would say one reason why the ear can cope with both a huge range of sound levels and doesn't respond linearly to volume is that it has tiny muscles that 'tighten up' the system to mitigate damage by 'turning down the volume'. I looked into this in a bit more detail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_reflex The reflex clicks in for sounds over the threshold (which can vary between 70 and 100dB). A sound 20dB above the threshold might be reduced by 15dB. A reduction of up to 20dB is possible. It takes 2-3 seconds to click in (which is why being close to drum hits is just so horrible). There are lots of subtleties. Also, it click in automatically to give ~20dB reduction just before you speak, so if you are expecting sudden bangs, try talking to yourself... -

Prompted by @Duckyincarnate and @Beedster and @Ramirez over in another thread, who can share experiences with mic placement and mic choice for recording? I've settled on a set-up that seems to work for me, though I still use some processing in the DAW. 2 mics and a piezo. A shitty old sE condenser at bridge height, about 12" from bridge, straight in front. Its nothing special but just seems to cope with the bass well. A nice AKG P420 just above right hand height, about 12" from fingerboard, pointing down towards hand. Underwood piezo thru Schatten Min-Pre. Then I use a wee bit of EQ and maybe some AO 'Re-Life' (it's magic!) and SD 'Fresh Air' plug-in to soften the mids and add presence. Sometimes have to phase shift one of them. I bought a lovely GAP R1 ribbon specifically for bass, but I never got quite so nice a tone as with the combo above. Might try it again though, now I've settle on positions. I went through so many alternative positions and distances, watched all the videos, Herve Jeanne's StringMatrix especially. What works for you?

New Model Army - Thunder and Consolation. The band was a trio at the time (with a violin player coming in on a few of the album tracks) but the interplay between bass and drums is exceptional. Sounds like a P bass with a pick cranked up loud, locked in with a really “busy but good” drummer. Try “Family” and “The Ballad of Bodmin Pill” for starters. Inspirational stuff.

I used gunstock oil recently. I really like the finish. It HAS darkened the colour a bit, but in a good way (it looks more vintaged). I'm happy.

This is sufficiently interesting to warrant its own post. There's probably been one before, but I'm gonna raise the issue again, without hi-jacking this thread.

Get a multi fx with multiple built in amp sims as well numerous distortion effects and see what works. I use an HX Stomp which would definitely do the job, but there are probably other more recent units available that will give the same plethora of options, some of them are probably cheaper too.
