I'm aware of a couple of folks in a band who have integrated psychedelics into their creative process. But the thing is, they're all talented players who are committed to experimentation. Better music isn't the emergent outcome - I don't think the mushrooms make them magically better players! But perhaps it opens up certain avenues of thought that otherwise might be elusive. My friends found that it wasn't so much the trip itself, but the reflection afterwards where any creatively potent insights took place. Now as for me, I need to be fully in control of my faculties to play even at the best of times, so we can't have anything which interferes with the synapses. What use is a bass if your hands might refuse to work?

I have been listening to Planet Rock's top 500 since this morning. It's the top 500 as voted by the listeners. Clearly some bands will appear more than once. Currently playing Sad But True by Metallica which is on 435th place.

Back to DIY modification of a cheap donor bronco or Mustang? A set of Tone Rider the Duke J pickups costs £65, plus a bit of P&P. If you are handy with a router, you are laughing. Just need a custom pickguard made, or even DIY it. I would be tempted to have a crack, if I didn't have J bass so well covered already. . -

I wonder how common these are with the original two cap electronics because the noise is low and the output is pretty strong. I’m using the same preamp settings as my Mustang and the level is only slightly less, and there’s no weakness in the bass register - quite the opposite. I wonder if the ‘weedy’ reputation is because most people play them through beginner rigs? Or used to? -

This just arrived! I’m letting it warm up before I do a bit of a setup and clean. I couldn’t resist plugging it in - it’s going to be great fun. The circuit is original and therefore very dark - about like a P bass with the tone at 20%, when the tone on the Musicmaster is at max! Due to this there’s very little rf noise. It’s getting some heavy flats this afternoon! -
Apart from Statins, these days I don't know anyone who takes drugs. That wasn't always the case. Rock was all about excess and if you did it properly it was fun, although many didn't know when enough was enough and some died as a result, the 27 Club for example. The sensible ones just got high and didn't overdo it. I only ever saw one guy on hard drugs, an American keys player in my first pro band. We arrived in Amsterdam and he managed to find someone selling coke before the rest of us had even got out of the van!! The secret was to have a good time on joints and beer.

Yep, back in the late 80s my then band were recorded for an ITV show. The footage of the other band that played that night went out, ours didn`t. When I saw it I realised why. We were dreadful, those "pints that made us play better" really let us down that night.

I know I keep banging on about it but if you’re not finding the breakup to your liking you could set up the gain/output like you have with the expression pedal but assign to input level instead. I found it difficult to get a subtle breakup when digging in with out making the tone too dirty sometimes so that would give you a little more dynamic control over it. Because it’s tied to device input you don’t need to worry too much about compressor placement either. -

Sorry, realised I didn't actually directly answer your question! I think the reason you couldn't really do this is that you would essentially be connecting your two expression control pots simultaneously, in parallel. This might initially seem like a good idea - you could then set the control pots as required to get any desired mixture of envelope and external expression control - nice idea, eh? There's a problem though: if you set one of them to maximum and the other to minimum, you would be shorting the 5v expression voltage directly to ground through the wipers of the two pots - bad! With some tweaking to the circuit I'm sure this could be made to work, but it would require someone a bit more competent at electronics than me to figure it out 😄

You're right about the savings on imported goods being minimal. That was my experience when I recently bought an Aguilar pickup set from Sweetwater in the USA - and that was only because I was able to get a really cheap international delivery with a US delivery broker called PirateShip. I ordered and paid for the set online, had it delivered to a friend in California and she dropped it off at her local Post Office. As you say, doing this is really a last-resort way of getting something that's not available in the UK/EU - like the Aguilar pickups and the made-for-Japan Mustang. You're also right about the warranty. Danny at Bass Japan Direct confirms that there would be no warranty, which is why he inspects and sets up all basses before he exports them. The price he quoted includes his £70 service charge. -
The DM610 is a large bookshelf/standmount speaker from renowned hi-fi brand B&W, featuring a well-braced 30-litre sealed cabinet with 8-inch mid-bass driver. The larger driver and extra cabinet space create a much better low end range than from most similar speakers. This model allows for either bi-wiring or bi-amplification. These speakers present clean tight bass response, surprisingly clear mids for such a large driver and the pleasant highs that the well-designed B&W tweeter at that time was famous for. They can be driven quite loud, enough for the physical effect of the bass to be felt without audible distortion or a sense of sound compression. Both speakers are in Very Good condition, especially for their vintage. All-original, complete with full grilles (one of which has a small hole, shown in the final photo). Only £125. Collection from Bournemouth BH6 preferred. Here comes the science bit… Type: 2-way closed, shelf speaker Colour: Ash black veneer Dimensions: 490 x 236 x 303 mm (H x W x D) Weight: 7.8 kg Recommended amplifier power: 30-150 W Frequency response: 70 - 20,000 Hz (±2 dB) Crossover: 2500 Impedance: 4 Ohm

A thread for Basschatters who have an interest in HIFI

thanks for all your replies, as I've said I already have a graphic equaliser, a Kenwood KE 2060, which is in the amps tape loop, I only really use it to cut around the 1k mark, especially on CD's, which seem worse for the, what I can only be described as fizz, which also makes the bass stand out more, I'm a believer in cutting what you don't want rather than boosting what you do. So I thought if I could get an amp with a mid tone control I could get rid of it, but it look like there isn't one, so I'll stick with what I've got -
It is mainly fun....trying not to fall out with 8 other souls!!!

Back in the early 90s we thought that in order to impress a number of scouts (that's record company ones, not boys in shorts) we'd need to be uninhibited and exciting on stage. Which of course meant about 6 pints and a noseful of coke each. We played abysmally... We never saw any scouts again! But saying that, in the same band we'd always have some weed at rehearsals and gigs (actually, weed wasn't that available - it tended to be more of the soapbar solid variety which meant it wasn't usually very strong compared to the skunk available nowadays!). And we played well - our live recording in our living room still sounds OK now! (If you want a laugh! ) However, I have a max of 1 beer (*) before playing now, and haven't smoked any dope in decades! *that's often due to driving though - recent gig in Chester saw at least 2 pints and a good glug of tequila before playing as the hotel was only 100m away! No decent cock-ups either...
