Working through the ABRSM piano grades
bass_dinger replied to bass_dinger's topic in Other Instruments
It feels so painfully and pointlessly slow - as if I am trying to play bass guitar left handed. I have gone backwards. As I said to my teacher, "I used to be a musician, until I started playing the piano." As for my piano teacher, I don't think that he is trained in that discipline, but he makes up for it by being a skilled musician and former band leader. I once played an arpeggio, or somesuch, and commented that it sounds like All Kinds of Everything by Dana. "I played with her". On other occasions, he mentioned working with Harry Seacombe, Max Bygraves, Shirley Bassey. I really need to ask him more about his background! -

Typically warrantee is to the original purchaser for a year or two for a clear manufacturing defect. If you're saying the pickups are too narrow it's a bit harder as the builder could claim it's a deliberate design decision... It gets murkier if it's a custom instrument - say I got someone to build me a bass, I might insist on having some kind of unsuitable pickups put in it, the builder might explain why not too but I go for it... then I sell the bass to someone else, why should the builder have any liability to a third person's opinion on my design choice? So if it's a production bass that's just had the wrong pickups stuck in it.... you might have a course to ask nicely for that to be corrected. If it's a custom instrument that as you say the person it was custom built for had no problem with, and your playing style means it is a problem - I don't think the original builder has any legal or moral reason to support you. If this is the pink bass I'm guessing it is and you had bought it after seeing clear photos on a site like Basschat then I think caveat emptor might apply as sadly for you the issue you describe is clearly visible.

neepheid started following NBD: SGC Nanyo Bass Collection SB310 (I think)
-
As mentioned in the SGC Nanyo thread, I have joined that gang - yesterday I acquired what I think is an SB310 with a Glockenklang preamp. Spent the afternoon restringing it (it came to be strung BEAD - my poor little brain can't handle that!) and giving it the once over - a clean, lemon oil on the fretboard, new strings, full setup, sorted out a little niggle where there was an odd screw in the bridge which stuck out because the head was too big to fit in the hole - found an M3 machine screw in my spares which had a small enough head to fit in the recess. Chrome instead of black, unfortunately, but it's a lot less noticeable than before! Only thing left to do is new knobs - these are press fit knobs but the pots on the Glockenklang are solid shaft so they kinda work but want to keep turning after the end of pot travel. Got some tasteful black flat tops coming in which are set screw fitting. I tried to find period correct ones but it seems the bevel topped ones with the white dot like the ones which SGC Nanyo used back in the day are only available as press fit - boo! I might revisit this though, been looking at ways to convert press fit knobs into set screw... Anyway, enough guff, here are some pics:

For context @bigthumb was giving my G&L JB a workout this weekend - he’s a monster player and humble about his slap technique 😀 Now it’s complaining that I only tickle it!
-
I didn’t keep it long, having all that was too cramped and I have a preferred boost, which is what I was using the parametric for. But they’re good pedals, sound good, no noise, great build quality.
-
G&L is a great choice, especially funky silver sparkle ones eh? @80Hz 😜 MarkBass do some great affordable amps, cabs and combos which offer plenty of power and sound quality. I hear Fender Rumble are great too although I've never tried one. Loads of good gear out there. Keep your eye on the classifieds here.

Would you spend the time getting the best sound out of an amp? Probably. And you would do it at ‘gig volume’. Could you get an acceptable sound from an amp the 1st time you used it. Also probably. Would be the same with a Stomp/ other HX. You just need to apply the same principles and use your ears.

Hi All, Genuine rare US-made Musicman Sub for sale. 4 string, passive. Comes with a soft gig bag with assorted spare strings and a strap. Selling because I no longer use it. Good bits: Good usable condition Fantastic tone Recent strings Intonation good It does NOT have the original plastic pickguard with the metallic pattern on it - I hated this and replaced it with a far nicer looking item. There is a chip on the main body near the volume pots as you can see in the photos. There are a few marks on the back of the neck too. Neither of these have any impact on the feel and sound of the instrument - it's a gorgeous piece of kit and comes from a relatively small run of 'Sport Utility Basses' (hence SUB) apparently Musicman lost money on these and didn't make them for long. Would prefer to meet up rather than post 'cos it's heavy! Looking for £650 ono.

The setup of most of these multi effects units is fairly similar really. Just take it effect by effect. You want an overdrive? Test all of them and see what suits you best. A chorus? Same deal. Rinse and repeat untill you've got a patch together. It does take longer than just getting a pedal and putting it on a board because there are more options, but it affords you the opportunity to try a lot of things out. I'm using an amp sim with no cab for a distortion - sounds great to my ears! I used my GX-100 as a pedalboard for a long time, turning on and off effects on the one patch. I've recently decided to spend a bit more time setting up presets for different sections of songs so I can step through them. As you get more familiar with any device you can get it doing new things in time. That's where the real power lies, but there's not necessarily a need to rush to that end game. You'll probably have been through this with your B3, but it's been so long that you've gotten comfortable with it. It can be good to challenge yourself with something new. It keeps the old grey matter ticking over.

Sitting on the Dock of the Bagel - Otis Redding

This is precisely the experience I have had with them. The staff on the shop floor are absolutely hopeless, they can find all the time in the world to make Instagram posts and take photos of famous bassists that come into the shop, but no time to actually communicate with customers. Appalling.
-
How do you find the initial ease of setup for the HX? The idea of having to spend hours building presets is a little overwhelming and looking at most of the info online around them, it appears this is needed to get the best out of them. As a fairly busy ( I like to think) bassist. I don’t want to spend a tonne of time working out how to build sounds. Or maybe this is the case with majority of more in depth multis and missing a trick?
