I'm quite fussy about what i hear on stage Daryl. If i know what the rig is and its decent quality i might use it but normally the provided backline is old Peavey cheap stuff that just doesn't cut it for me. Same in most studios i use altho i tend to just put up with it in studios. Dave

Just back from leaving James Oliver Band in Portsmouth. Only went to meet a mate of mine. Still does nothing for me, and he seemed to drag Norman Watt Roy down to his level. Hugely disappointing. I wasn't expecting to enjoy JO but NWR was a surprise. Timing was all over the place.

Genuinely a pillar of the genre. The soundtrack of my childhood featured an enormous amount of his playing. God bless and sleep well Steve Cropper. You moved a lot of people and, very much like the great bassists you played with, you always supported the song.

My understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, is that the Steinway in the Numa player is not the same as the downloadable update one for the Numa X. The original Numa D samples were rather lukewarmly received but the update is considered, and to my ears from comparing demos is, a substantial upgrade. The keybeds for the Electro (TP100) and Stage(TP40) are also not the same as the 73 (TP110) and the 88 GT (TP400w). Supposedly they represent noticeable improvements, but I'm just going by user reports. Also the Nords aren't graded, and the Nord Stage action is for whatever reason not the same as the slightly nicer version of the TP40 on the Nord Piano (those I can confirm from my own experience). How do you find the GT action? I'm not a great pianist though I did study for over 10 years, but I do have for reference a very nice and still quite well-regulated Model O that I inherited from my grandma (who was good). I've never found a digital that felt anything like the real thing, but the top Roland/Kawai portable actions do at least feel responsive and musical.

What would you want to ask? "What string have I got" type questions? I suspect current LLM technology will struggle to pull consistent data out of the forum text even if you could scrape it without affecting the rest of the forum's stability.

Saw him live in the Festival Hall, London with the Blues Brothers ban (- Jake & Elwood) when the band toured after the Blues Brothers 2000 film. He and the rest of the guys were obviously having a lot of fun playing. A true great of the guitar.

Thanks very much. For reference my Jap 75RI neck incl tuners weighs 1225g, of which ~445g is the tuners (Some ultralites weigh under 200g for 4) Overall that bass weighs ~4.3kg. I think I might get away with a little more neck weight before dive became an issue (especially as the weight distribution is along the neck rather than all at headstock as with heavy tuners), but I'm not sure. Trouble is I was hoping to use a lighter body due to back and shoulder troubles. I will keep following, I think what you're doing is very cool! Foam core (especially at headstock?) definitely appeals though.

I have all the same there shirts. To be honest I find almost soaking the hole with PVA adhesive before inserting the threaded insert works well although both superglue and epoxy will do the job well. It’s just that there is less risk with the PVA. I tend to stick to the workpiece with superglue/cyanoacrylate and if you get epoxy on anything, it’s a swine to get it off.

Got my head around it a bit better now, thanks!

And remember that Studiologic and Nord share the same keybed: Fatar (same company as Studiologic).

The rig is not my style. Dave, 2 years ago I would have said no thanks, I'll bring my amp. Now, anytime I can walk into a gig with a bass in my hand and my pedalboard over my shoulder I'll take it. Daryl

As I own the controller version of it (SL88 GT Mk2) with their Numa Player, I can confirm that the Steinway D is quite decent (very similar to the XLN Addictive Keys Studio Grand), but certainly not up to the level of the VI Labs Modern D or the VSL Synchron (or Studio) Concert D-274 or VSL Studio Concert D 1887 (love this one) or Modarrt Pianoteq 9 Steinway Model D New York and Hamburg, for instance (yes, I do have the full bundles from each company... 🤦🏻🤪😉 ). I can also confirm that there are some very good organs with the Numa Player. Check this, I think the guy has tried everything on the Numa X 73: That said, a Numa X Piano 73 or 88 or GT or the MIDI controller version (SL Mk2 73 or 88 or GT), Modarrt Pianoteq 9 and an iPad will give you all the sounds needed and way more, plus an excellent integrated soundcard with ultra low latency (Numa Piano X or SL Mk2), so no need for an external soundcard.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2025?

Good solid IEM setup there. -
I grabbed a Spectracomp off eBay today, so hopefully it'll be here in a few days and ready for the next band practice! Thanks for the advice! I'll give it a whirl and see what my ears say. I'll be using it in a blues covers band and have 2 general tones. One with the VT, which is fairly flat-ish and just uses a pedal for a bit of warmth and slight break up. Then I use a catalinbread SFT for more grit. I switch between basses depending on what I fancy taking with me, but it'll be wearing flats. Any tips on which tone print would be good to start with? I hear good things about the Captain East...

Some of these are really good, others are poor quality zinc (?) castings. I found the stainless steel ones best when inserting into mahogany or ply, the coarse thread ones (as shown) sometimes do not self tap and pull the ply laminations apart. Using the stainless ones and thread tapping the wood hole produced the best results (superglue or epoxy them in if you want total solidity) This avoids wrecking wood near to the speaker hole., there are no prizes for guessing how I know.

Worst purchase: set of Ernie Ball strings I bought on a whim at the guitar and bass show and haven't put them on. Second place best: the Smoothhound wireless kit I took in px when I sold my EBS Session 60 amp. It buzzes and plips like anything on stage, but in my practice room it's silent and means one less lead. Which makes it easier to pick up the bass and practice. Best purchase: In person lessons! I don't practice enough in the week to get the maximum value (blame the job) but I am slowly and measureably improving stamina and repeatabilty and adding to my technique. Big shout out to Chris at at The Instrument Factory in Newport Pagnell.
