IME it depends on both the bass and your playing technique. Tapered B-strings suit my 5-string basses and how I play (quite hard), to the point where I have been considering getting Newtone to make me a custom set with a tapered E string as well. You get more choices with non-tapered strings, but if you can find a set with a tapered B that works for you and gives an improvement in the feel and sound of the string then go for it. Remember also that just because a particular type of string works on one bass, it does not immediately follow that it will as good on a different one.

I fancy a pickup change. Jazz type, passive humcancelling?
Marc S replied to fretmeister's topic in Repairs and Technical
When I owned a Jazz bass, my favourite ever sound was when I fitted some old (ish) DiMarzio pickups. They were just brilliant. Definitely more "oomph" than any other passive Jazz pups- but they had a lovely warm sound, which seemed to produce the whole range really well. Plenty of low end, punch at the top end, and mids that cut through well. Whenever I played that bass, and in several bands / genres, it just sat nicely in the mix. Wish I hadn't sold that bass... Re pickup height - the luthiers I've spoken to, and the ones I watch regularly on YouTube all say the same thing - don't set the pickup height too close to the strings.... so adjust that carefully. Let us know how you get on 😀 -

I was planning to do an hour or so talk about 3d design and 3d printing at the Bash. A few people have expressed a slight interest. For those of you who remember the village hall in Clapham, there is a little room adjacent to the kitchen, and I would use that. Is this of interest to other people? If so, what would people like to know about? I can't design and print a bass in an hour but I can talk through the basics and explain what works and what doesn't. It's easy enough to bring a 3d printer over and I can make the session interactive. Perhaps show how to design a simple pickup cover, or a volume control or something. Just throwing this out there for feedback and comments (good and bad). Thanks Rob

Hey folks. I'm selling this lovely rig! Sounds heavenly and the cab has never been gigged which means it's in nearly mint condition. The amp is a little worn but works perfectly and sounds wicked through the 210 with both active and passive basses. Vanderkley 210MNT £650 (comes with non original cover) Markbass Little Mark Tube £350 (comes with vanderkley spartan bag) Would ideally sell them together in which case buyer gets a FREE Tsunami speakon cable! Message me for more pictures and for any questions. Cheers

A bit of this and that.

Probably a bit neater too. The ebs is quite a large metallic beast covered in knobs and switches that are easily activated in error...I had to read the manual FFS!

Nice collection, having 30 hours of bass instrumentals in one place is handy for practice and inspiration. Do you have a few standout tracks you would recommend starting with? -

I posted a few (including a scary Wal!). I'll try to find a couple but will need to convert all the photos due to Imgur UK restrictions. It may take some time! -

£250 plus postage (probably about 12-15 quid, it's quite heavy). Brilliant piece of kit. I used it with various amp modellers and preamps. Sits comfortably on a pedal board and powers cabs of your choosing. Condition is good. There are a couple of superficial marks on it. The fan in this is fairly loud so if you've never heard one It can be quite disconcerting when it fires up! It has double lock stuck on the back at the moment but I can remove and clean if that's a requirement. I'll be sorry to see this go but it's become surplus to requirements and I'm trying to follow my new year's resolution! Thanks for looking, Andy Specifications Product Title: Seymour Duncan PowerStage 170 Product Code: 11901-002 General Power: 170 W @ 4 Ohms Channels: 1 Output Impedance: 4-8 Ohms Controls: Bass, Mid, Treble, Level (Master Volume) Level: 0 dB to 47 dB Treble Control: +/- 13 dB @6.61 kHz Mid Control: +/- 13 dB @712 Hz Bass Control: +/- 13 dB @87 Hz Inputs: 1 x 1/4'' Outputs: 1 x 1/4'' Length: 5'' (127 mm) Dimensions Height: 5.24'' (133 mm) Depth: 2.84'' (72 mm) Weight: 0.9kg (2lbs)

If it's just for recording a gig and the mic feed isn't going to be sent to FoH then knock yourself out. Your best choice will be whatever would be used on your rig in the studio, and trust me it's not a kick drum mic. Record both the mic and the DI, and if you have enough tracks/processing power a safety DI direct from the bass too. Whoever is mixing the recording will be able to use the source(s) that sound best for the overall recorded sound

Knackered truss rod and fingerboard removal HELP PLEASE

Having removed a fretboard on my own build before (because the fret slots weren't right), it's very easy for something to go wrong. My fretboard came off in chunks and the neck split at one point. If it's a bass you value and you haven't tried this on something expendable first, get it done professionally. -
