This is great advice. The amount of hassle removed by consulting an expert is great. We recently played a new venue that the owner had spent thousands of pounds doing up. Alas he hadn’t spoken to a sound expert and the room was boomy and horrid. A few hundred would have made a world of difference.

Mine gave me great service for many years, until I got too old to lift it. Not quite as much bass as my Ampeg Portaflex but 10 times the weight!

I think that will all work fine, along with the excellent advice above. You might also benefit from a couple of little monitors in your set-up, to allow band members to get a slightly different mix in different parts of the room, and to help manage mic feedback. The Thomann 'The Box' ones are great value.

The US suffix doesn't mean US built. Fender Japan made a version using alder for the body (and ash in some cases) and US spec hardware.

You're right Lozz, the JMJs are supplied new with fender long scale stainless flats, however I'm led to believe that the cobalts are a more fragile than steels and might not survive the winding going around the string post. Maybe if any of the sets I have on a thunderbird gets a bit dead sounding, I'll experiment with that set — I wouldn't want to risk it with a new set though. I've just remembered I have a set of 30" Cobalt flats which should fit my Sienna sunburst PJ mustang as the body isn't string-thru, so I can see how they sound on that bass.

I was at PukkelPop (one of the biggest music festivals in Belgium) in 1993. I don't remember who was on the main stage, but I found it extremely boring. So, I went to the other stages and I heard this band that was so completely different than what I had heard until then. I immediately went to that stage and heard the last 3 songs of their set The energy! I immediately both both albums. Saw them again in '94.

You won't set anything on fire or blow anything up. The speakers will easily handle the power from that amp if you use it sensibly. The PV range of amps have output protection so cut-out before over current. On this one there's a reset, on others you have to wait for it to cool down and reset. Just watch you're not driving the amp into clipping as this will damage things. Adjust the input sensitivity with the main volume on low, while listening for distortion.

Yes, I used my Jazz Elite last night. Sadly, my newly acquired Nate Mendel Precision didn't get a look in. The Elite at full chat with the preamp on was potent and powerful for most numbers, and palm muted and passive with half passive tone for the quieter ballads. Even my "vintage" passive American Original can do any job on its own. Full 50s-60s tribute show, or technical power trios. I'd have a trawl through the marketplace on here. You can find some good instruments for very little money.

Try the regular scale, on pretty much all the Mustang basses I’ve bought they’ve come with regular scale strings, including flats, on them.

Chickened out today and although I had the five on the stand next to me ended up using the four for everything. Problem is we did a set where the first song had a walking bass line which I wasn't confident enough to do on the five, and then there wasn't time to switch bass's between songs. Mind you I suppose it will come with time - playing again next week...

The Fender Jazz is a good choice. I borrowed an active one a long time ago to record with and liked the sound. I do seem to like the twangy bass guitars, like the Spector. Mine is a passive EMG thing and the HB is active. I'm not after endless tone shaping, just good sounding pickups to select. The EMGs on the Spector sound nice when the string clanks the frets, I end up doing it on purpose, slapping the string with finger tips, but the HB sounds bad like that. The challenge is to play an instrument before buying. I've introduced myself at the local guitar shop and they might be able to help a bit in that respect. They have a billion guitars, and half a dozen basses, two are acoustic, one fretless. Tricky.
