skilamalink Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago I would never buy a second hand Fender where the serial number is not in the Fender database. I think ease of resale is a factor in your decision on whether to buy or not. You will have the same issue that the current seller is having. It appears to be accepted as kosher on BC but then that might restrict your potential buyer to being a member here. Selling via auction for example will not allow any extra info to be shared and you risk sellers demanding a refund. 2 Quote

Agreed, and I wouldn't buy that particular bass, because - and I know it's not hard evidence - the images feel wrong, I can't say what it is, but given that the serial number also doesn't check out plus the seller has already provided some misinformation, I would assume that while it's not a forgery as per Andy's previous comment (why bother when for the same costs you could forge Pre-CBS Fenders), I still suspect it may not be what it is presented as. Case candy etc? Not beyond the realms of possibility that someone could buy the real thing with case and case candy, and then slip a lookalike bitsa in the case and sell it on, I've heard less plausible theories turning out to be true Not saying it's not the real thing BTW, I am saying that I certainly wouldn't buy it given the photos and details provided. My Fender knowledge doesn't extend as far as pickup placement or decal shapes. If they are stickers, then the seller should fess up if you ask about it. He may not know mine were pretty good Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago FWIW I don’t think it’s a squeer knockoff … Quote
Steve Browning Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Probably showing my ignorance here. The truss rod tool looks to be the hex type, which I would have expected only on a truss rod adjusted at the headstock end. There is no sign of it there on the bass being offered. Quote

Some also have the Allen key nut at the heel, pretty sure my 2014 jazz has that 1 Quote
SurroundedByManatees Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) Don't rely on the Fender Database, it's far from being watertight. Many serial numbers will come up as non existent or will give a totally different production year (the year error goes for Japanese instruments especially). I've had a Fender Highway model which I bought new that wasn't identified in the database. The same for a 2003 Jazz that was totally legit. Edited 8 hours ago by SurroundedByManatees 1 Quote

Piers_Williamson Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago (edited) Did Feddy Lee play a Gender Jazz? I can feel a Basschat Spoonerisms thread coming on! Edited 7 hours ago by Piers_Williamson tidy up format 1 Quote
jonno1981 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago It’s not obviously a fake, the headstock and logo are the usual giveaways. The case is era correct, the candy is right, the body looks correct with the truss rod being at the heel (exception of non-original scratchplate), but the quality of the pics and the weird inlays are making me suspicious. £700 is a good price though as it looks in good condition. I’d insist on better pics or a video call with the seller to hear the history before exchanging any money. Quote
