Farewell bass world

I took the decision after the weekend...

 

So after playing mainly fretless bass and double bass during 40+ years, I've come to the decision to quit.

 

Why?

 

Because my bass duet is officially over and at 60 years old, I really don't want to join a band or other musicians again and start toying with people ego...

 

From now on, I'll focus on piano only, which seems to be my instrument and only took me 40+ years to figure that. 🤦🏻

 

At least, I can play anything on my own without having to manage some badly placed susceptibility.

 

I'll be selling some gear too, watch the ads.

That's a sad farewell Hellzero. I do hope you'll be sticking around these 'ere parts. I do understand though. By the time you get to our age group, we tend to have less and less tolerance for other people's egos and stupidity.

 

I just recently walked away from one very lucrative regular job where the two [quite disturbed] people running the show would regularly go into a totally unreasonable 'red mist' mode and 'make up s***', basically taking their mood from their home lives out on people working with them for no good reason. When people start shouting aggressively in the faces of others and clearly don't listen, I just walk away. I don't do conflict. I deal with children in my semi-retired day job. I don't need to deal with yet more children in the supposed professional playing world. 

 

But I digress. I do hope you enjoy your Pianistic endeavours, and occasionally pick up your Bass and smile, knowing you had a good time and have good memories.

Hey Tony, I hope that's a decision that works for you, and that's it's less a farewell and more an au-revoir. Either way, please keep sharing your knowledge and experience here, BC wouldn't be the same without you mate 🙏

Don't do anything too hasty. Bass is a difficult habit to quit.

I'm not far from doing the same, 40 years of playing, mostly fretless, will be 56 next year and probably going to call it quits at the end of the year. I'm walking away so the choice is mine but I tired of it all now, I've achieved more than I ever imagined I would but music is a very different kettle of fish these days. I played Glastonbury this year so I'd sooner go out on a high rather than flogging a dead horse and I'm looking forward to writing some new adventures. I also dabble with the piano and find it incredibly rewarding.

 

Good luck with your new chapter and thanks for all that you've contributed over the years.

I get it.  At 61 (almost 2 years ago) I was thinking that it was getting to be too much (40+ years of gigging) but I joined a 'tribute' band at that point and I have to say I'm probably doing some of the best gigs with cracking musicians, better than I've ever done... still hard work and not the carefree life of me in my early years but I do love playing music live.  Piano isn't that bad though as it has all of those low notes in it!

At the moment, I've decided to keep my Leduc basses (2 of them where custom orders) and the Le Fay Remington Steele, so that means that only the BassLab L-Bow V and the Shuker necked fretless Jazz Bass will go alongside an EBS-1 V2 preamp and loads of accessories (I need to check again).

I gave up playing for the best part of 10 years. Was the best thing I ever did. I took up loads of other hobbies and then came back to it again when I wanted to.

This reminds me of a local double bass player whose licence was revoked  this year due to dementia. A friend bought him a Yamaha silent bass so he can more easily get a lift and still do gigs.

That is the kind of "giving up" I like to see, i.e not really giving up at all.😄

 

Never make the mistake of thinking that if you're not out there gigging ect that it's not worth continuing. A friend of mine is a very successful artist and he always emphasises the importance of pottering about at home for any creative person. That is often where great ideas are born, and who knows what those ideas might come to?
