jonno1981 Posted April 19 Posted April 19 (edited) I’ve been using a Levy’s gig bag that came with a lakland bass I bought about 20 years ago. The pockets have all disintegrated and the zips are on the way out. What’s the most comfortable, well protected, sturdy gig bag for max £150? My basses are all standard shapes, nothing pointy. I’ve seen the mono bags but wondered if there were just as good /good enough alternatives for around the same money or less. I don’t use it that often but want something good I can trust to last for years. Sadowsky porta bag? TKL? Any others I should look into? Edited April 19 by jonno1981 Quote
chris_b Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Mono Vertigo M80 gig bags are the best, but more than you want to spend. 3 Quote
Lozz196 Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Mono Vertigo & M80 go for around that used, imo worth keeping an eye out for one. 2 Quote
Buddster Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Really happy with my Gator bag. Sturdy padding, staps and pockets. Excellent. https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Gator-GT-BASS-BLK-Transit-Series-Bass-Guitar-Bag-Black/1Y5Q 2 Quote
neepheid Posted April 19 Posted April 19 TGI Ultimate gig bag for £110-130 TGI Extreme gig bag (less padding but still substantial) for £60ish 3 Quote
franzbassist Posted April 19 Posted April 19 I would highly recommend these: https://www.thomann.co.uk/thomann_safecase_80_e_bass_bag.htm 1 Quote
Mudpup Posted April 19 Posted April 19 I've always liked the Gator Pro Go bags. Tons of storage, tough as old boots and great protection 2 Quote
TeresaFR Posted April 19 Posted April 19 I rather like the Reunion Blues Oxford, but it's just slightly above you price (here it is anyway ndertons.co.uk/reunion-blues-rbx-oxford-series-electric-bass-guitar-gig-bag/). I did consider several of those mentioned above, but can't exactly remember why I didn't go for one of them, probably something to do with having bought the most expensive bass I've ever had and opting for a relatively "fancy brand" and Mono was too heavy and ridiculous for my needs (I'm very unlikely to be dropping my bass out of a hotel window from multiple storeys up). 2 Quote
jonno1981 Posted April 19 Author Posted April 19 Thanks for the suggestions. I really want to stick below £150. Any more and I’d almost justify buying a new bass that has a bag included! I’ll look into these and buy something! Quote

Having said that, I bought my Mono twin case 12 years ago, and it's still going strong, nothing fallen off, no broken zips etc. had a couple of tears in the outer fabric from loading against flight cases with sharp edges. However, these were easily fixed by running a bead of Gorilla super glue along the tear and holding together for few minutes.......😎👍 Edited April 19 by mikebass456 Spelling Quote
peteb Posted April 19 Posted April 19 There are plenty of options out there. A GruvGear GigBlade bag stands up to a Mono bag. Get one secondhand if you want to keep costs down. 1 Quote
Supernaut Posted April 20 Posted April 20 TGI Extreme cost me £50 and has been my gig bag for a few years now. Holding up very nicely. https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/TGI-4836-Extreme-Series-Bass-Guitar-Gig-Bag/2WP4?utm_campaign=surfaces_across_google&srsltid=AfmBOorsJBjGgNs-F_xx_L78M5XzXpcxJpvLgmTyb2LDj7KN4hsJByhwAno 3 Quote
lemmywinks Posted April 22 Posted April 22 TGI Extreme for a great budget bag. TGI Ultimate for a premium bag with minimal storage, Gator Pro Go for a premium bag with lots of storage. The TGI Extreme is very similar in quality to the Gator Transit (formerly and rather confusingly the Pro Go X) series only a fair bit cheaper. The TGI Ultimate is a different kettle of fish and up there with any gigbag on the market. 2 Quote

Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted April 23 Posted April 23 I bought a thomann safecase 80 for my 4003 and I don't think its possible to buy a better specced bag for the price (£120) https://www.thomann.co.uk/thomann_safecase_80_e_bass_bag.htm It is made for Thomann by Music Area, who sell the same thing with their own brand for a higher price. I would say that the old iGig is as good as the Mono Vertigo (I've got both). The thing about the iGig bag is that it has more storage, which is very useful. I don't think that you can get hold of them new these days, but someone is selling one in the classifieds on here. As I said before, a GruvGear GigBlade is up there as well. BigRedX Posted Wednesday at 12:28 Posted Wednesday at 12:28 Are you going to need to walk any distance with the gig bag on your back? If so you are going to need to try it out yourself. No matter what anyone else says, what suits some people might not suit yourself depending on your height and build. Loads of people like the Mono bags but my M80 is massively uncomfortable for me to walk any distance with it on, as the bottom of the case slaps against the backs of my legs. It's fine for over one shoulder going from the band transport into the venue, but no use for the 30 minute walk to the rehearsal room, which for me was one of the reasons to have a gig bag rather than a hard case. I'd also be wary about the "advantages" of lots of pockets space to carry other items. IME they tend to make what is an already heavy gig bag unwieldy. Whatever you choose, your best bet is to buy on line and then you can return it if it isn't right for you Quote

Such a shame you can't get them anymore. It is a bulky case however - I'm considering getting something slimmer when I fon't need all that extra storage space the iGig offer. A Mono would be great, but they're a lot of money. But fender's FB620 look's like very good value https://www.andertons.co.uk/fender-fb620-electric-bass-guitar-gig-bag/ Quote

It is a bulky case however - I'm considering getting something slimmer when I fon't need all that extra storage space the iGig offer. I've got a single iGig, which I bought secondhand and have had for years. It's great when you are just taking a bass to a gig and don't want to carry an extra bag. You can get virtually everything that you need into the gigbag (even many small amps). I've also got a iGig double bag that did a lot of gigs and is still OK, with a little bit of visible wear. That can get heavy with two basses, but that is something I quite liked at the time - more difficult for an opportunistic thief to nick! These days, I'm generally using a Mono Vertigo for my main bass and a Mono Sleeve for the spare. They have a lot slimmer profile and therefore take up less space / easier to jam into a car with loads of other gear. The storage on the Vertigo isn't bad and I can get everything that I need onstage into the pocket, but I do miss the top storage pocket for car keys & phone, etc that the iGig bags have. 45 minutes ago, BigRedX said: I'd also be wary about the "advantages" of lots of pockets space to carry other items. Pretty much every time I use a gigbag, it's to carry from the car to the venue. The one time I had to walk any distance to the stage (across a Butlins camp in Skegness), it was with the double iGig bag carrying two basses, which was a bit of a nightmare! Quote

Read the spec from Fender, as they should not be used to store a bass with a nitro-finish. Just sayin'. 1 Quote
tauzero Posted Wednesday at 15:24 Posted Wednesday at 15:24 TGI Extreme (guitar version, used for headless basses) has been doing a good job. I've also got a Thomann E-Bass Gigbag Premium which has more pocketry. The straps are better (easier to put on) on the TGI but the Thomann one is fine. I used to have the guitar version for headlesses, the only drawback being that the reinforcement for the strap peg position catered for the single fairly central strap peg of most guitars, not the widely spaced double strap pegs of headlesses, and eventually (after several years) the main zip started to go.
