These really are superb basses. I really regret not buying a single H to go with my HH, and now they don't make them anymore ☹️. Anyhow, I hope you have a lot of fun playing this Bongo.

I really cannot fathom why some people think these basses are ugly. I have always thought they look very chic. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of folks who are of that opinion have never seen a Bongo in the flesh.

I turned 21 in 2005.

I had a mortgage, was living with the mother of my first child…

when I turned 21, my mum and dad - who I’ve battled with, but have been incredibly supportive of my musical endeavours asked me what I wanted.

”Musicman Bongo”

And they gave me £800. So I put the rest to it and I got one of the early bongos.

They didn’t come with a case originally.

i took a case…but was later informed it was a £120 optional extra 😕

Returned it.

Anyhow, 4 years later - my partner wrote her car off and quit her job on the same day when we had a brand new baby…so a massive bass sale began.

@LukeFRCand @Etienne got some basses…

the Bongo went, at a huge loss…

they weren’t popular at all at the time.

now I’m 37, the “brand new baby” is a 13 year old bass playing emo.

Its time

found the same age, spec, colour…

It’s in Northern Ireland.

i debate a flight. And then I remember my good mate @briansbrewis in Derry.

and here’s where a person shows their worth.

A message last night to Bri.

“Yeah it’s near me, I know him - let me work on it”

and nothing…for a bit.

this afternoon

“I’ve gone out for a drive…here it is…got £150 knocked off and I’ll get it ready to ship…”C1D47C0D-A10D-4164-BCF1-B77F017BC05F.jpeg.6b7354887c5993cc3da24ba2fe7199d4.jpeg

it’s in his lounge.

He’s bought the bloody bass!

What an absolute hero - Bri is no middleman…he is the man.

I never in a million years expected him to do this - I thought he was going to talk the guy into shipping the bass (listing was collection only)

I cannot express my thanks enough (I’ve paid him back - financially at least.)

A depressing thing is that I don’t have any pictures of me with my original bongo.

Anyhow - Publicly, thank you Brian.

Ah nice one, been watching this on gumtree, only up the road. Andy, happy for you mate.

Well…bongo 5 quest is on hold.

Went to the studio today with the Stingray 5.

it just works.

And I picked up something else today which needed saving and has cost me a bit to make right: so the bongo has a “brother”.

all will become clear soon enough.

Was hoping you would sell that teal SR5 😉

It took a while to adjust but I really love the look of these. I've always wanted to try one but never had the opportunity sadly.

Is the back pickup in the traditional MM position or a bit further back?

Will get my tape measure out. Just had a takeaway so not yet…

The rear pickup is a fair bit closer to the bridge, in what I would describe as conventional bridge pickup position.

The rear pickup on these HH basses isn't really a substitute for a traditional Stingray position H. There's an element of Stingray tone in the Bongo, but these basses have a distinct sound of their own. The midrange frequencies are inherently different to a Stingray, to my ears anyway. The Bongo has a unique sound, and I really like it.

Awesome!

Like CV said above, I too had a period of adjustment re the looks but soon decided that they look great. And that is THE best colour. Sadly I don’t find them comfortable - my usual right arm issue - otherwise I’d have had one myself long ago.

It is this story that has motivated me to hunt for my missed #1 from some time ago, an Stingray Special 5 in Cruz Teal... Why was I stupid enough to let it go I do not know....!!

And yes @Musicman20, prices for new MM are circa £3k nowadays actually...!

Ander.

What a great story.

Also great to see Bongo love as it is a completely unique and amazingly well engineered bass.

Aren't the prices of these new absolutely insane now? Like £2.5k+

The only Bongos I can easily find new in the UK for £3350. Bearing in mind these instruments have been in production for 15+ years, there are a fair few 2nd hand, so i can't imagine the new ones really sell at all.
