SteveXFR
I didn't expect this sort of debate when I started this thread, I half expected to be told to fork off and that would be it. Since there's little agreement here, can everyone at least agree that Korn's slap lines sound like a filing cabinet falling down a fire escape? Slap from 1:18. Just horrible. Fieldy has said in interviews he hates the sound of bass guitar and to be fair to him, this sounds nothing like a bass guitar unless it's in a filing cabinet falling down a fire escape. 1

Are you sure you posted the right clip..? It's true, I must admit to being rather deficient in the hearing department, but I don't hear much in the way of 'slap' in that. More of a NIN -clone vibe, and bass drum-bass mixed rather too close for me, but not what I call 'slap'. Is it me (for a moment.. For a moment...)..? I hear some slap after the "attempted beatboxing" breakdown, but not sure that there's any in the section from 1:18 onwards. If so, then it's not very good slap, even for metal. EBS_freak
1:18 - I remember breaking a string once... and I attempted to play on. I swear I copped Fieldy's tone A1
BillyBass
I remember reading that Robert Trujillo's then 12 year old son played bass for Korn on a tour. I was quite impressed but after hearing the clip posted by @SteveXFR I"m even more impressed. How could a 12 year old boy throw filing cases down a fire escape for 4 minutes straight? Not bad.

Killed_by_Death
Here in the U.S. the great unwashed think everyone who plays bass MUST be a slapper. So if they're feeling saucy, & find out you play bass, they will do the Paul Rudd move from "I Love You Man" I once was within 4 Meters of Paul Rudd in NYC at Rockefeller Center. I could see him & he could see me, & I wanted to give him the finger, but I also wanted him to know why, so I just smiled & kept moving. He was waiting to be interviewed on The Today Show by NBC. Those windows at their back are real. I spent a fair bit of time around TV studios when I was in New York, was at a David Letterman show, Tonight Show (Jimmy Fallon), & saw Saturday Night Live in the studio. Kevin Hart hosted. More about slap, at Guitar Center, that's all anyone does, it's a cacophony back there in the bass corner.

4000
It just makes me laugh that playing with a pick is frowned upon in certain circles but if you double thumb you’re a genius, even if it sounds the same but worse. 😂 1
lowdown
That bloke playing 'Dean Town' is getting on my nerves...His head nodding doesn't groove at all. It really needs quantizing. 1
Guest
I think that video is a perfect example of all the right notes in the right order, but it just doesn’t groove. I’m no Vulfpeck fan but Joe Dart nails the timing and length of each note perfectly, which is what gives it that feel. Double thumbing sounds great in small snippets but IMHO it just doesn’t work when playing complete bass lines. I think perhaps it’s because it’s a percussive, staccato technique and the sound doesn’t have the same bottom end or warmth. Victor Wooten, Alain Caron and host of other very talented players do it much better but as with @4000, I’d much rather listen to a great pick player like a Bobby Vega. Stub Mandrel
My idea of double thumbing is much more fun 🙂

I don’t think they do sound the same, I’ll admit after watching that video a few times it’s not as good as I thought it was , you can’t get this sound from a pick 🙂
SteveXFR
Nope. Once the Asian sounding banjo type thing started I just couldn't listen any more.

lowdown
The thing with Bobby Vega, and why he is a top, top player is....he grooves (no matter what style he is using).
