Changing a song's style

When we want to change a song's feel we usually first play the structure of it to a different rhythm, in a different tempo. This will make you automatically come up with another bass groove or even a whole different bass line in the same key. Jam till its phat and whoop there it is.
Bloody hell, with the amount of godawful "novelty" songs being posted as examples of good covers in this thread I'm surprised nobody has posted a clip of the Barron Knights yet.
I was going to mention this in my original post (not the Barron Knights bit) that a lot of 'quirky'covers and the bands that turned them into their own style (Hayseed Dixie and Dread Zep spring to mind) soon do in fact start to sound like novelty bands. I think with those, both bands were always playing it firmly tongue in cheek though so it fitted that 'cabaret' ethos. Always liked Nazareth's vs of This Flight though I don't think Joni was overly impressed.

Surprised no one has posted clips of JJ Cale songs being covered, most of which would probably be better known than the originals.

But here's a favourite cover of mine:

Now that really IS a novelty song ...

Love Alexis.I have about 8 albums. Danny Thompson's on about 5 of them.

Usually the bands were fabulous, AK on the other hand was patchy at best.

We've recently started doing Tainted Love in a swingy shuffle sort of way. No recordings of it yet, but an immediate hit with the punters. Interesting bassline possibilities, if you dare to venture past the 7th fret :)

It all happened when mucking about in the practice room, trying to avoid having to make the "original vs softcell" decision. I just started playing an uptempo walking bass line, and the singer just started singing just like the original. It just clicked and we just added a jazz guitar solo at the end :)

I guess that's what you get when you put the original songwriter together with a bunch of wannabees like this:

Alexis Korner : vocals, Tipple, percussion
Peter Frampton: electric guitar
Nicky Hopkins: piano
Steve Marriott: electric guitar
Keith Richards: vocals/electric guitar
Rick Wills: bass guitar
Terry Stannard: drums

;)
