I saw Chris Minh Doky live in the 1990s and was really impressed with his sound so it's a good excuse to post this............

I have admired Chris Minh Doky's playing on both electric and upright for a few years now . I can't help but think, though , that the time is ripe for him to make a solo album and call it Okey Doky .

Gary Tibbs on his Wal Bass... doesn't get much better than this imo

This is one of my favourite clips on YT . I love the sound of that Wal bass too , and I love the ambitious way Gary Tibbs plays it . The studio version has got the brilliant but sadly departed Alan Spenner playing his Wal bass on it .

.....or an album with his brother called 'Okey Doky, To Me, To You' :)

I saw Chris MD at Bracknell in the 90s playing an electric bass. I can't remember who's band he was with but he was playing a bass shaped like a G&L ASAT. Great player.

I always loved Kasim Sultan's playing and tone on L by Steve Hillage . A superb and underrated player . It's a shame he ended up in Meatloaf .

i guess when meatloaf gets the munchies you better run fast :o

When I first started playing , Geezer Butler's fantastic sound and superb playing on Sabbath's the Heaven And Hell album really inspired me , and still does now well over thirty years later :

I seem to remember reading somewhere that he's married to one of the Danish Royal family , or such like . I've seen him playing a Yamaha BB1500a electric bass in the past . On both electric and upright he gets a beautifully ripe and fruity sound .

So many different tones that are great. It's horses for courses. I think it's actually hard to get an overdriven bass tone just right; Justin Chancellor on 10,000 days nails it..but to my ears Geddy Lee has got it wrong over the last few years (Rush fans, I am one of you don't hurt me!).

Personally this is the one that ticks all of my boxes.

Yes but the title of this thread is Best Bass Sound You've Ever Had / Heard?
In that case every bass sound I've ever had on every studio recording I've ever made has been the best bass sound I've ever had at the time. IMO.

As for recordings that don't have me on them, the bass sound I aspired to in the 80s was this:

There is no "best bass sound" Firstly it is entirely subjective, and secondly it exists only with the context of each individual song/arrangement/production.

Best sound/s I've ever had are the ones I have now.

Best sound I ever heard was Chris Squire's on Siberian Khatru on the Yessongs live album.

Plus1 to both these

This does it for me - completely unusable in most scenarios but an absolute monster for these guys. Its a link to the whole gig but just listen to the 1st 2 songs for an idea (best thru headphones)

Me: The Depot rehearsal rooms, London in 1982. An Ibanez faker through their old Acoustic head and a biggish Peavey cab. Fat and clanky.

Someone else: Bob Glaub playing whatever it was he played on Jackson Browne's 'The Pretender'.

I have a couple of favourites from people I've seen live.

The most recent was Paul Turner at the Jazz Cafe with Shuffler. Mostly using a '66 Jazz through an Aguilar DB751 into a pair of Aguilar GS 410 cabs. Augmented by an Alleva Coppolo 5 on a couple of numbers and a awesome pedal board.

The entire gig is on YouTube but you don't really get a feel for just how good he sounded from this recording. His playing was, of course, excellent but it was the core tone he had that blew me away. Expertly mixed to leave a nice little tonal spectrum for him to fill without getting mashed by the kick drum :)

The other was, I think, Dave Sutton playing with Lucinda Williams at the Hard Rock in New Orleans. He was using what looked like a Fender Pino but could just have been an old P bass. Through a classic Ampeg valve head and a matching 8x10.

I'd always read a lot about the combination of a P and an Ampeg stack sounding great together but had never heard anything quite this good before. Deep low pulsating bass but never flabby or ill defined. Fantastic mix as well - makes such a difference :)

Funnily enough I'm currently listening to George Murray play exactly that combination of gear with Bowie on the "Stage" album and, apart from thinking it's possibly the best backing band I've ever heard, the bass just sounds fantastic.

I guess it also helps if you can take Tony Visconti on the road with you to do your live sound. :)

In a previous metal band I was in, tuned to C, me playing an aria Pro IGB50 thru a Trace Elliott GP12 4x12, when doubling up with the guitarist (no idea what gear he was using at the time) had the most amazing growl ive ever heard from a band. Never been able to reproduce it, but it was a brilliant sound

Its just immense and I hate Stingrays!

Be prepared to face the wrath of the resident BC 'experts'.

They always know what's best. :D :D :D :D :D :D

NB. This post should have a caution that the words 'hate' and 'stingray' in the same sentence could cause fainting to some forum members.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of days. I think the one that really stuck out and stuck in my mind was when we saw the HArlem Gospel Choir at BB KIng's. Hartke cab was all I can remember.

The Ben L'Oncle Soul thing from Jools Holland is probably the best I've heard on TV but I know a few of you think it too trebly
