If I could be on bass and vocals I'd love to have

Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and vocals

Don Powell on drums

Dr John on piano

and Roy Wood on whatever he cares to show up with.

I'd listen to every word and suggestion each of them says - I have massive respect for each of them - but I wouldn't be intimidated at all. They all put their socks on the same way as I do.

The Traveling Wilburys wasn't a bad effort, Tom Petty can go back on guitar and I'll play his Dano longhorn. Job done. Would have been good after Roy Orbison died if Del Shannon who was lined up as a replacement hadn't committed suicide as I've liked him since I was a little kid. Sadly history didn't work out that way and worse still they lot me as a bassist! ;)

For me im 3/5 of the way to my perfect lineup already.
Me-bass
Will ferrel - vocals - amazing unique voice with shades of bruce dickinson. Extremely powerfull and creative too with his melodies.
Martin Fitzharris - drums - an old friend and one of the most creative drummers i have heard.
Now for the dream bit
Jari maneppa (wintersun)- guitars
Micheal romeo (symphony x)- guitars

that would be epic.

Lead vocals - Gary Hughes (Ten)
Guitar / backing vocals - Dave Meniketti (Y&T)
Lead guitar - Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom)
Keyboards - Jens Johansson (YJM's Rising Force)
Drums - Anders Johansson (Hammerfall)

As for the 'alive or dead' vote, just put me in any given line-up of Rainbow and take me on a tour of Germany :)

If this is gonna be an ultimate band, it can't have me on bass, so I'll bend the rules a trifle.

Also, since I got some power here, the ultimate band will be playing my music. For that, I need:

vocals: Peter Hammill
guitars: Robert Fripp and Steve Howe
bass pedals and other keyboards - me
drums: Pip Pyle

If a bass guitar is granted in addition, then Ray Shulman should play it.

Old fashioned, yes.
I'm old.

best,
bert

Think I'll have to rule out Pat Metheny as being for all practical purposes dead, based on his output in the last 10 years. That leaves:

Slide guitar - Ry Cooder
Acoustic guitar - Alan Prosser
Other guitars - RIchard Thompson
Drums - Jim Keltner
Bouzouki - Donal Lunny
Vocals - Bonnie Raitt
Accordion - Sharon Shannon

The set list is going to take a bit of thought.

Horns:
Maceo Parker
Fred Wesley
Randy Brecker (sorry Rockin' Rick Gardner, but...)
Drums/Perc:
Akira Jimbo with ?uestlove, one acoustic one electric kit
(Gutted Ray Barretto is dead. Someone else from Fania or else one of the percussionists from Mandrill)
Guitar 1: Prince
Guitar 2: Guthrie Govan
Keys: Herbie Hancock
Male vox: (and, err, 'rhythm' keys so I can have him alongside Herbie!): Stevie Wonder
Female Vox: Ann Sexton or Sharon Jones
Backing vox/dancers: Kid Creole's own Coconuts
Turntables: Kid Koala, or maybe Grand Wizzard Theodore
MC: Melle Mel or George Clinton

There're two things* wrong with this band though, first I'd feel like a d&*k on bass when it should really be Bootsy or Larry, second I intended to have more members of Mandrill in there who're pretty much my ultimate band on their own at the moment. Still though, pretty much the funkiest show ever I think.

*also third thing, Roger Troutman is dead or he'd be on talkbox

I'd be all Snarky Puppy and get tonnes of musicians, so...

Tenor Sax - Bob Reynolds
Trumpet - Miles (my hero!)
Harmonica - Toots (of course!)
Keys - Bernard Wright
Organ - Sean Martin (Snarky Puppy)
Rhythm Guitar - Keith Richards
Lead guitar - Joe Pass (Allen Holdsworth)
Bass - Me (or Pino depending on availability!)
Drums -?uestlove (Steve Jordan if Pino is in!)

And that's me limiting it a lot!

Jan Akkerman - guitar, lute, etc
Phil Collins - drums (as long as he can go back in time to his Gabriel Genesis days)
Rick Wakeman - keyboards
Mrs Zero - vocals, because she'd never forgive me for not letting her sing in this band. She's quite good too.
Me on bass, struggling to keep up
