1.
Hello bass chat! Just a little thread about volume and how 'you deal with it'? Let me put this into perspective. I practice quite a lot however my family really don't agree with it, they say it's too loud and I get nagged constantly all day and night. (well up to 9pm... then I stop) Then they go on about how If I lived next to a neighbour who wouldn't let you do it (or he'll.... smash you up or your bass or put sh*t through your letter box) what would I do? They mainly complain about double bass as it's acoustic and obviously theres no volume knob on it... like electric bass. So is there anyway to keep the noise down or? hmmm more importantly what do you do? And do you get lots of complaints... because it drives me mental... when everyone goes on about how I need to stop practicing etc.. Cheers, Andy.
Do you practice in front of the TV or in the bathroom while they're having a bath? If not, then tell them to eff off!
 2. My band decided to do a gig on the Royal Mile but we didn't do it by halfs. We hired a portable generator for the amps and our drummer brought his full kit. After a couple of tunes things were going great and we'd attracted a huge crowd, until out of the corner of my eye I spied a gentleman in a wig and a dress gesticulating wildly, with policeman in tow. What we hadn't realised, is that we had set up outside The Scottish High Court and the judge (it seemed) was put off by hearing rock loud music while he was sentencing murderers. Spoilsport!
 3.
I face 'generic zero-definition bass tone' syndrome quite often. I try not to stress about it these days, 'cos if the engineer wants to mix the band from the drums up there's nowt you can do about it. I generally insist on a mic or post-DI which I think helps. Every now and then we get someone who knows what mids are, and what flatwounds should sound like. I cherish those moments.
The reason why I don't use flatwounds live is because engineers don't know how to EQ them and you end up sounding woollier than a very woolly thing.
 4.
Real quick -- a comparison view on reliced basses. In my flat, I have a brick wall. I like that look. But the brick isn't actually in the wall. I brought a brick wall from a movie set -- which looks fine on camera but close up it's a little too "perfect." So I "reliced" it. Added some morter in between the rocks. Scuffed and chipped a few. Put a little stain here and there. A random smudge. Now, if you walked right up to it, you would not know it wasn't a real brick wall. Am I being deceptive? Am I trying to fool people? No, I would gladly tell anyone what I did. I just like that rustic look. That's the way I see reliced basses. If you like that look, you're entitled to have it. BUT... Whereas I see one as an art project, I see a pre -reliced bass off of an assembly line that looks like a thousand others is kinda lame. (Sorry). So I was wondering -- what model bass do they start with before the "relic?" It's not a MIA, that's for sure. And are we expected to pay for the scratches? I guess my point is -- if there's an additional cost to a road worn bass, why not just start out with what they start out with? Do the antiquing yourself, save some money and have your bass more personalized. It just seems to make sense. Does anyone know?
I'm drawn to the roadworn Jazzes but paradoxically think the whole 'roadworn' thing is just a bit naff. I think I need psychiatric help.
 5.
I'm planning on doing the same with an EBS 4 ohm 650w cab I got off here recently. It'll be fine just to run the cab off one of the amp outputs right? (provided I don't put another cab into the other output)
Yes just run cab out of one output. If you plug another cab through the other output you'll reduce the impedance below 4 ohms ,which is the minimum the amp is designed for, and you risk damaging the amp.
 6.
I was at Kelburn Festival this weekend (where I got to play with two bands ) and I saw quite a variety of bands. Some bands were awesome, and had really good bass players who played great basslines. At least I think so, because all too often they were an indistinguishable rumble and I had to use my imagination to fill in the gaps. Often, the "bass" actually came from the bass drum and you could just about get a hint of pitch definition if you focused hard enough. Grrrr. It nearly drove me mad with a couple of bands that clearly would sound amazing if the basslines were audible. Why why why why? Why?
Probably because Kelburn pays peanuts and all the pro sound engineers are off somewhere where they'll get paid. I love Kelburn and have played there a couple of times but it's run on a shoestring.
 7.
Is anybody using a one cab solution for utilising the full power of the MiBass 550. I currently run two Mi12 cab's but would be interested in a similar sized one cab solution. I guess any cab of at least 500w and 4ohms would be suitable, any recommendations?
I run My MiBass 550 through a 4 ohm Eminence Kappa 15" speaker I fitted in my old Ashdown Cab. Sounds great and is plenty loud enough to compete with loud drummer and AC30 equipped guitarist.
 8.
I bought a white with tort pickguard '62 RI MIJ jazz bass last year. It's a great bass and very light and bright-sounding But has been slightly relic'd and poorly done in my opinion so I was thinking what the best option for a make-over could be. I've been looking at jazzes online for ideas and I like the idea of putting on a control plate with two concentric knobs. I think it looks great on the vintage basses. Where would I buy such a control plate replacement? Also, are there any good guitar guys out there who could improve on the relic job done to my bass or even give it an aged refin in another colour? I'd be very tempted to have it in sonic blue with the previous colour showing through here and there. Also, If anyone has attempted something similar I would love to read your comments and see the results. Cheers.
Kevin Lindsay is your man. He is the guy who created the pink Jazz of Haimsey's you were admiring. Lives in central Scotland too. 9. Go out and try a Geddy Lee Jazz. The shallowest neck known to man. It's as close as I ever got to playing air bass.
 10.
yes, thats right. I just wonder what will be when this another 8Ohm cab is 210 and much weaker than 410 (even not 300W + 750W ) Will it be big difference comparing to mibass with only 410? In this set ( 410 + 210) amp will use 280W on each cab in 4Ohms and this 280W is almost limit of this 210...so probably I will have to reduce a bit volume on amp ..and Im not sure if then will be better than with single but strong 410 cab...
It will be fine. Just remember to stop playing if it goes on fire.
 11.
I know someone who was in his class at school!
Wow!
 12.
hallo, have a question:) I have mibass 550 and using with laney B410CD cab (750W rms , 8Ohm). Is it safe to use it in this way? sounds good, but ashdown is only aprox 280W in 8Ohms..and the cab is 750W...so its huge difference . But sounds really good, this 410 Laney cab is very selective and with good horn , so hear everything in very natural way....but dont want to have accident one day during any gig... Other option is: have possibility to buy really cheap one more laney cab , the same serie, but 210 - looks like the same speakers as in 410 but between 200-300W (the info on the back of the cab is blurred, hard to read anything , only that is 8Ohm and made in UK, can't find any info about this Laney B410CD or B210CD on the web..). So..what seems to be better: -mibass + single 410 ( cab gets aprox 280W , 8Ohm) -mibas + 410 + 210 ( each cab will get aprox 250-270W in 4Ohms, together should be more than 500W ..but it seems that can be really close to the limit of this 210 cab:/ and I know that connecting together 410 and 210 sometimes is bad idea) Can't test this 210 before buying unfortunetelly. thanx in advance for help:)
What Ashdown mean is that you will get 280 watts (think of watts as power) out of a cabinet which has a resistance of 8 ohms and the full 550 watts out of a cabinet which has a resistance of 4 ohms. So don't worry you MiBass is designed to play through a speaker cabinet like your Laney and it won't damage it. If you get another 8 ohm cabinet and connect them both to you amp, the resistance will reduce to 4 ohms and your amp will produce more power and you will be even louder.
 13. On this topic I give some pointers to another basschatter on the pickups I've tried over the last couple of years. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/211019-jazz-bass-pick-ups/page__fromsearch__1 I've just put the silver series pickups I mention on sale, in the marketplace, if they sound like your kind of thing.
 14. Pickups from a Japanese, Fender Squier, Silver Series, Jazz Bass for sale - £20 plus £3 P&P. These are pickups from my 93/94 Silver Series Squier. They have a lovely, classy, deep Jazz Bass tone that I've never found on any other Jazz Bass I've owned. If you're upgrading, or just want a deeper, smoother, sound from your Jazz Bass, these will do the trick. Search for 'Silver series' on basschat and you'll fine lots of people saying nice things about these early 90's Japanese basses. I've now got a set of Roadworn, Jazz Bass pickups in my Jazz, So these are surplus to requirements.
 15. It's all in the fingers is what THEY say. Whoever THEY are?
 16.
So......... Having spent some money to find a bass and amp that gives me "my sound" i.e. the sound that I want and the band is happy with, what happens when we play a big gig and I get split between the back line and FOH PA? To my mind, what comes out FOH is my bass instrument with the tone set by the "engineer", the PA mixer desk, PA amp and PA speakers and monitors. This is not "my sound" - the one I produce up on stage with my bass and amp - or am I wrong? The thing that triggered this question a few years ago was when we played up at the big Blues Festival in Burnley. Main Stage at The Mechanics and I was told not to worry as back line would be supplied. On arrival I found I had the choice of SVT through 8x10, Trace Elliot or Marshall. I opted for Ampeg as this is what I normally use (albeit a V4BH through a 4x10). We set up, sound checked, sounded great on stage (monitors were a bit thin) and our set went down really well. However, when staying on to watch the other bands, it was very noticeable to me that whoever they were, whatever they were playing, whatever rig was used, the bass sounded the same out of the PA. We had a laid back discussion in the green room later in the day and came to the conclusion that bassists are usually f*cked at a big gig when it comes to getting their own sound out there. Am I just a thick bass thumper or is there something in my thinking?
You're lucky! I played The Great British R&B festival in Colne in 2012 and there was no bass! I played through the worlds quietest Ampeg SVT and 8x10 and couldn't hear a thing on stage. I listened to the other bands and the bass players could have been miming, because I couldn't hear a thing they were playing. We obtained a recording of our live set straight from the desk.....and you guessed it......no bass. The venue was a huge warehouse type thing which would have made it hard to get a good bass sound. But NO bass through the PA! The sound engineer must have been deaf.
 17. I played a couple of gigs recently with different bands. The first one was where I, and everyone else in the band, were DI'd and the second one was with my bass amp. The sound was great for both. But the reason I brought my amp with me for the second was because I knew I would be competing with a stupidly loud guitarist, going through a VOX AC30. I placed my amp on a table at ear level with the volume turned down and used it as my own personal monitor.
 18. Pete bought my scratchplate. Deal was smooth as silk.
 19. Some of my best friends talk sh*t. That's probably why I like them I guess.
 20.
Don't laugh...but experience has taught me that Sweet Home Alabama is easy to play, but much harder to play in an extremely tight fashion. I have to employ a fair bit of damping and ghost notes to be on the money with that bad boy...not so easy when singing simultaneously.
The actual bassline is very simple but if you don't have 3 electric guitarists and a piano player in your band it can sound just a bit empty. 21. Well if you're prepared to spend that kind of money I think you should make sure you try before you buy. You don't want to spend thousands and find the bass you bought has a neck like a bassball bat. This is probably the guy you want to go visit.
