1. I feel that there's a few possibilities..... 1. He didn't know the real worth of his bass and didn't set a realistic starting price (The description is certainly very vague). He then got a shock when somebody messaged him to say he was selling it at too low a price and possibly they offered much more than £230. 2. He's just a numpty and isn't happy with the price he's been offered. I have to say £230 is a ridiculously low price for a bass worth £600 and if I was him I'd probably be reluctant to part with it too. He's going to have to bite the bullet and take the negative feedback and Ebay flak coming his way.
2. Thinking back, No1 is what I did when I was a beginner. You only need to memorise the notes on the E and A string as the notes on the D and G string will be octaves of those notes. Makes things much easier and quicker to learn the notes on your fretboard this way.
3. Looks like a nice Fender Roadworn with case included. With one day to go it's sitting at £150. They usually go for around £600. Am I missing something? Edit: Yes a link would be handy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281163495099?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
4. I really can't tell the difference and I've had a million different pickups in my Jazz., all of which had their own character.
5. I have a bass with both a Jazz and a P pickup. It has a 3 position selector switch but frankly a blend pot would have been much more useful.
6. It looks like it's been stored in a septic tank.
7. Stone the crows! I'm sure that the last time I checked out Geddy Lee prices the were well over £800. You can get one at GAK today for £729 (Mexican I assume). I wonder if that's because of lack of demand for Mex Geddys or because of the passing on of lower production costs for Fender? 8. Deferred gratification is not my thing. Also I hate the idea of taking a bass worth 'silly money' on tour with me.
9. I know how you feel. Occasionally I'll play with bands with just bass, vocals and guitar and if the guitarist plays out of time on a solo (blues style) it sounds like we're playing different songs. What I do is ask the singer to clap to the beat when the guitarist plays a solo and that's all it needs to pull the rhythm all back together.
10.
But in the case of the Custom Shop limited editions, he is right. See http://www.fender.co...imited-edition/ which has nothing about the instruments in playing terms, but does say "Each Custom Shop Limited Edition instrument is only available for a short time, which makes it eminently collectible and adds to its investment value.". So Fender are aiming these instruments at (deluded) investors rather than players.
People who buy these instruments are usually 55 year old dentists. It's either a guitar or a Harley Davidson. EDIT : Sometimes both
11. Some very respected professionals say very good things about the roadworn Jazz basses. Here's a review from Basschat's very own Outtoplayjazz http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 And Ed Friedland too http://www.edfriedland.com/equipment/1/77 . .
12.
that was quick! had it cured properly?
Yes it was pretty hard and dry. On the can it says it drys fully in 4 hrs. I could have given it a polish but the finish is pretty good without it. It also gives the impression it's pretty hard wearing too. What a great find Molotow paint is. Thanks for the heads up I owe you a pint. By the way I just used a B&Q mask when I painted mine, which did the trick. Now what colour shall I paint it next week?
13. Eat spare ribs every night using your hands. Then go and play your bass for an hour without washing your mitts . Repeat every night until strings sound how you like them.
14. I thought that the fabled 'Pawn shop bass' had black blocking on the neck not mother of pearl? Y'know.... the one sitting behind geddy in this video?
15. If you carry your bass in a hard case, never change your strings and have decades of accumulated gunk clogging up the gears of the machineheads (like my 30 year old P/J) your bass will very rarely go out of tune.
16. Why does the drummer get a solo? Drummer know thy place! Who does he think he is!
17. And 5 hrs later paint has dried
18. If you want to know about buying guitars for investment look no further. Here is an article from the 'Wall Street Journal' quoting a world renowned, vintage guitar collector and expert. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324436104578579071945355516.html That same collector is the 'cat in the hat' in the following video. Just to show it's not just the stereotypical, 'rich plonkers who can hardly play', who buy guitars as an investment (although it took me until about half way through to figure out he was playing one of my favourite songs, 'Phonebooth', by Robert Cray). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV6wIu-nL24 Meow.......!
19.
I have a MM and a SUB and I concur. it's ridiculous.

original USA SUBs (2003-2006)? or the newer line by Sterling By MusicMan?
I've owned a couple of original USA SUBS and they were as good as any Stingray. But the new cheaper SUBS, which were manufactured recently and sold for about £300, don't nail the Stingray sound in my opinion (although they may well be nice basses in their own right).
20. Of course the attention to detail of a top line, luthier, built bass will be second to none. So as an 'object of desire', like a work of art, I can see the attraction.
21. I bought a retro looking Fender lead a couple of years ago. The first one didn't work. The replacement worked but gave me the muddiest, woolly sound I've ever heard. I chucked it away it was so bad. Is this an issue with curly leads or just, badly manufactured, fender, curly leads?
22. Lubricate the nut with carbon from a pencil and it may help in the short term.
23.
Oh God.. We've created a monster.. O____O Why not start learning to play guitar if you need that many strings?
I've heard some nice sounds from 7 string basses. You do need to know how to use them and utilise the extra strings for chordal work or solos though. I'm sure Russ knows his stuff.
24. The other day my brother in law (a guitarist) volunteered to dep on bass, for a local band, and I loaned him my amp. He kept on complaining that up on stage he couldn't hear anything but it sounded great out front. Just goes to show that it's sometimes difficult to be sure how loud you are out front. The only way to do it, is to get a long lead and listen to yourself from a punters viewpoint.
