Drat. I bought a set of 64s and thought they were great at capturing that 62 Jazz Bass sound and at a really great price. Hope he manages to sail his boat around the uk..

I've owned a 150 watt Ashdown combo which was loud enough. When I paired it with another ashdown speaker cab it gave a MUCH bigger sound and the whole thing was given a new lease of life and sounded great! My advice is to try the cab with the combo first because it's the easier option. You'll be impressed by the improvement in your sound with all those speakers behind you. You won't need the extra watts the peavey has with all those speakers blasting out.

I have a Jazz with an Allparts P neck. If you've got the cash you can pick and choose the Fender body and neck you want from The Stratosphere on Ebay. I've bought stuff from them before. It's not cheap but it's the real deal. http://stores.ebay.c...Bass-Parts.html Alternatively try bluebass for a very good quality Mightymite P neck with a Fender logo. I just bought a can of white and Azure Blue Light (which is as close to Sonic Blue as Molatow do). I'll tell you how I get on. -
Least precise precision bass ever?

Harley Benton Vs Squier VM Jazz basses - Opinions please!
gjones replied to Gamble's topic in Bass Guitars
The Squier has a maple body. So it won't look as pretty close up. -
Oh and Rickenbackers - I've never actually played one but can't help but think about style before substance when I see one.

Trace Elliots - probably because rehearsal rooms is where orrible old TE gear goes to die and that's where my hatred of them stems from.

Hmmmmm, from £390 to £699. That's what I call an optimist
gjones replied to gjones's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Maybe just me....but the logo looks all wrong...? But then I am prone to bouts of random paranoia What?...who said that?...keep away...keep away...do y'hear.......
Maybe the dog chewed the logo off as well? -
I saw this bass in a local pawnbrokers going for £390. Looks like somebody bought it and immediately whacked it up on Ebay for £699. Now a roadworn, shell pink, Japanese Jazz Bass, going for £390 is probably a little on the high side (considering the headstock looks like it's been chewed by a dog). But putting it up for sale for £699 is the definition of optimism. I bought a set of mex pickups for £9.99 on ebay. They weren't very good. My recommendation is to buy a set of super duper pickups (maybe Lindy Fralins) and upgrade the electrics via kiOgon's solderless CTS pots wiring loom, here on basschat. You'll still not have paid as much as you would have for a Mex standard.

Micro/Mini amps that can have the pre-amp fully bypassed.
gjones replied to Shockwave's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hey guys. I just had to get rid of my Ampeg PF-500 for some emergency funds until pay day. I loved it because I could fully bypass the preamp on the amp so I can use my Sansamp instead. Looking at the Mibass and Little Giant and all they appear to have FX returns instead of a dedicated pre-amp in (Though the LG has a Line IN, will that be the same?). I am looking at the cheaper end of the market (Around 200-300) second hand. Need at least 400 watts at 4ohms, So is there anything out there for that cheap with fully defeatable Pre-amp? Will be paired with a Barefaced 12T
The mibass (and most other ashdowns) has a button that switches off the pre amp. Would that be any good for you. -
Tempted by an Ashdown Mi Bass 550..........Close.
gjones replied to weepaul's topic in Amps and Cabs
Any views on the Ampeg PF 500 ? Heard some rumours they can be unreliable. In a fight, which one would win ? Mi bass 550 or PF 500 ?
I like my MiBass (the original 550 with semi parametic EQ). But I regularly also play through a PF500 and Ampeg Classic 410 and it also gets a great sound. I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I recently recorded with an all valve SVT Pro and the little PF500 gets very close to that Ampeg rock sound. -
My J-Retro preamp had a tiny control which adjusted the output higher or lower to suit your bass amp. Try opening it up and seeing if there's anyway to adjust the output on your preamp. If there is one It will probably be a tiny rotary control which you adjust with a small screwdriver.

Rotosound swing bass strings are pretty low tension anyway. When I went down a gauge to 40 - 100 I noticed the tension went down by quite a bit too. DR strings are great but expensive and IMO higher tension than Rotosound swing bass.
I'm a Precision man through and through, but the Jazz I just bought from vmaxblues on here is starting to make me question that! The bass is fantastic, and I'm loving it, however, the E string seems to be much louder and deeper than all other strings. I've restrung it with Fender nickels, thinking it may cure it, but no. The pickups look to be set ok, although I may try and lower the bass side a touch to see if that helps, but ALL the other strings seem fairly uniform in volume and tone, except the E string, which basically sounds like a Precision tone! I've not heard this complaint before, and the only other strange thing I've noticed is there is an earth buzz when I DO touch the E string pole pieces, which is kind of the opposite of the usual earthing problems. I have been running both pickups full volume, and as I understand it there is a 'sweet spot' if I back off the volume on both p'ups a touch, but I'm yet to fully understand that as I've only played it a couple times. It's a Silver Series Squier. Any ideas?
Having owned a Silver Squier I Know they're very nice basses with ceramic pickups that put out more bass than your usual Jazz pickup. The first thing I would do is only play through one pickup at a time so you can isolate which pickup is the problem (if the problem is on both pickups it means the issue is with your setup and not the pickups). As far as the earth hum is concerned, Silver Squiers earthing setup is like the early 60s Jazz Basses and all have an earthing strip. Check that there is a copper strip connecting the bridge and the brass plate underneath the bridge pickup. If this is missing or not connected to the earthing circuit properly, you will get a irritating earth hum. But remember, Jazz Basses will always hum a bit when using one only one pickup or when you're near electronic equipment, like PC monitors etc. When you play using both pickups they cancel the hum and act like one big humbucking pickup. I also recommend opening up the control cavity and making sure everything is wired correctly, just in case. The earthing strip looks like the one in this picture http://img265.images...29/9c9a1hs6.jpg

Can cheap pots make your bass sound cr@p?
gjones replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in Repairs and Technical
All i can say is that Kiogon (John) changed the pots from my JV squier to his own and the difference in sound was truly astonishing. Much deeper and louder, completely changed the characteristics of that bass.
+1 Same here. Although repeated fitting and resoldering of wires, due to complusively changing pickups, didn't help the sound of my original electrics. -
