1. And here it is played by the man himself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC0uzVzSNNQ
2.
You're already familiar with my modded CV Dunc: I think the mods have really improved an already amazing bass, especially considering how much they go for. I bought mine for £200 secondhand on here and it had already been modded with a set of Wizard 64's and the cavity had been shielded. I was more than happy with it for over a year and then I got a Fender American Special jazz with a maple neck, after a few days I quickly realised it was a pretty bland and harsh sounding jazz but I loved the neck and I've always liked the OW/maple/tort combination so off it came and on to the CV body with no hassle. The roller bridge was a £30 shot in the dark and it turned out to be a great bridge, fantastic adjustably and great sustain. I also swapped the stock tort plate for a proper Fender one as the CV looks a bit cheap. I have a relatively high turnover rate when it comes to basses and this has recently celebrated it's 2 and a half years with me and I honestly hope I can hold on to it for a while as it's such a good bass. I would happily have another one, no question.
So you would thoroughly recommend the CV Squier Jazz....except for the pickups, the neck, the bridge and the scratchplate? I'm being ironic in humorous and friendly way,,,,,,,,,,,please don't hit me
3.
Thanks for the responses, to answer a few of the points, I did try moving the amp to another room and the hum was at the same level. With regards to the hum when touching the strings it stops, it is also almost entirely absent when the tone is rolled completely rolled off. I have looked at fixing the issue myself but I almost feel like I shouldn't have to on a bass that is essentially brand new. If the hum had been there when I bought it then I wouldn't have such an issue but there has been a clear change from when purchased to now.
It's most likely an earth wire issue as P basses are usually pretty silent when wired correctly as the pickups are humbuckers. The following diagram shows what the wiring should look like, If you're curious unscrew the scratchplate and have a look, The earth wire (which comes from under the bridge) should be soldered to the volume pot. If it's not then that's what's causing the buzzing. If everything seems to be soldered correctly then it's a more serious matter. Either way I think you should take it back to the shop and ask their tech to fix it,since you bought it from new. 4.
Hi all, Just a quick one, to ask if anyone would know where to get cheap basses from? Ive just refurbed my 1980s charvel and i made a rather good job of it i thought, which was surprising. I not have massive plans for a bass. I need a donor bass though of any make, condition etc. Scratches and chips are not important but no gouges. Does anyone know where to look for these? Ive looked on google/gumtree/this site but no luck. I am only looking to spend 20-50quid on it as its just going to be a project. Any help would be great cheers.
Do you have a cash converter or any secondhand shops near you? Gumtree is always good for cheapos.
5.
I understand, but surely something like string tension affects that arc-and the consequence is a higher string action if (for example) you use a heavier gauge. So in that case you would adjust the truss rod and lower the action at the bridge to compensate. The problem comes when the saddles are at their lowest and the overall action is still too high - and then you would have to insert shims.(?) What's the general opinion on non-wood or paper shims? metal? perspex etc.?
I used a sliver of an old Morrisons loyalty card wrapped in gaffa tape. Didn't make any difference to the sound.
6.
It's not at all, you can't adjust the whole length of the neck. I'm certain I'm right on this one BRX.
You are. I used to try my best to get a decent set up by tweaking the truss rod and fiddling with the bridge but it never worked. As soon as I fitted the shim it made it possible to get a decent action.
7. I owned a bass with an atrocious action for years until I decided to bite the bullet and put a shim in the neck pocket. It worked a treat! Can somebody tell me why Fender discontinued their miro-tilt system when it seems such a great idea?
8.
Had a phone call today as eBay hate privacy laws and give out your number Willy nilly. Anyway, seller seemed anxious about the whole thing and claimed he was selling it for a friend, who came by and took it back. (in sure that's against eBay regs Sewell) Anyway, a shame I didn't get it as it was a cracking price for a bass I've wanted or a while but greed is king these days and people want more than what they deserve. Im not going to bother myself with this any further, on to the next one.
I think you did the right thing. Just have to put it down to experience I suppose.
9.
Why thank you kind sir Do the screw hole line up nicely also thanks
No the screw holes are different. Best to drill holes where the screws go before you fit the tuners. Those particular wilkinson tuners are bigger than the ones on your squier as they're based on vintage 70s ones. So they cover the screw holes left by your old tuners and the back of your headstock will look quite neat and tidy once they're fitted.
10.
Hi guys can anyone please tell me what model wilkinson tuners I need for my Squire VMJ please as I understand the hole for the Squire tuners are smaller than the standard Fender hole thanks in advance
Measure the hole in the headstock. If it's 17.5 to 18mm it will fit the Wilkinson bushing (the circular thing that you fit in the hole before you fit the tuners). I just bought a set of these.and they fitted perfectly.http://www.chguitars...tuners-891.html
11. I feel that there's a few possibilities..... 1. He didn't know the real worth of his bass and didn't set a realistic starting price (The description is certainly very vague). He then got a shock when somebody messaged him to say he was selling it at too low a price and possibly they offered much more than £230. 2. He's just a numpty and isn't happy with the price he's been offered. I have to say £230 is a ridiculously low price for a bass worth £600 and if I was him I'd probably be reluctant to part with it too. He's going to have to bite the bullet and take the negative feedback and Ebay flak coming his way.
12. Thinking back, No1 is what I did when I was a beginner. You only need to memorise the notes on the E and A string as the notes on the D and G string will be octaves of those notes. Makes things much easier and quicker to learn the notes on your fretboard this way.
13. Looks like a nice Fender Roadworn with case included. With one day to go it's sitting at £150. They usually go for around £600. Am I missing something? Edit: Yes a link would be handy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281163495099?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
14. I really can't tell the difference and I've had a million different pickups in my Jazz., all of which had their own character.
15. I have a bass with both a Jazz and a P pickup. It has a 3 position selector switch but frankly a blend pot would have been much more useful.
16. It looks like it's been stored in a septic tank.
17. Stone the crows! I'm sure that the last time I checked out Geddy Lee prices the were well over £800. You can get one at GAK today for £729 (Mexican I assume). I wonder if that's because of lack of demand for Mex Geddys or because of the passing on of lower production costs for Fender? http://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-geddy-lee-jazz-bass-black/25229?gclid=CNOcisKGtbkCFXLLtAodzTgAPg
18. Deferred gratification is not my thing. Also I hate the idea of taking a bass worth 'silly money' on tour with me.
19. I know how you feel. Occasionally I'll play with bands with just bass, vocals and guitar and if the guitarist plays out of time on a solo (blues style) it sounds like we're playing different songs. What I do is ask the singer to clap to the beat when the guitarist plays a solo and that's all it needs to pull the rhythm all back together.
20.
But in the case of the Custom Shop limited editions, he is right. See http://www.fender.co...imited-edition/ which has nothing about the instruments in playing terms, but does say "Each Custom Shop Limited Edition instrument is only available for a short time, which makes it eminently collectible and adds to its investment value.". So Fender are aiming these instruments at (deluded) investors rather than players.
People who buy these instruments are usually 55 year old dentists. It's either a guitar or a Harley Davidson. EDIT : Sometimes both
21. Some very respected professionals say very good things about the roadworn Jazz basses. Here's a review from Basschat's very own Outtoplayjazz http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 And Ed Friedland too http://www.edfriedland.com/equipment/1/77 . .
22.
that was quick! had it cured properly?
Yes it was pretty hard and dry. On the can it says it drys fully in 4 hrs. I could have given it a polish but the finish is pretty good without it. It also gives the impression it's pretty hard wearing too. What a great find Molotow paint is. Thanks for the heads up I owe you a pint. By the way I just used a B&Q mask when I painted mine, which did the trick. Now what colour shall I paint it next week?
23. Eat spare ribs every night using your hands. Then go and play your bass for an hour without washing your mitts . Repeat every night until strings sound how you like them.
24. I thought that the fabled 'Pawn shop bass' had black blocking on the neck not mother of pearl? Y'know.... the one sitting behind geddy in this video?
