Ended up in the Blues bar in Camden Saturday night. A band were on called the Frank Ash Band (I think) and the bass player had a stingray. Sounded absolutely fantastic. Punchy and smooth, cut through beautifully... Looked modern, single pick up, 3 EQ type thing to me, although the couple of hours I'd spent in cottons rhum shack prior to the gig had made things a little hazy... Want one now... Rob
I have a friend who has Vintage Fenders, G & Ls, Gibsons and his stingray always sounds the best in a band context.
Nice looking bass but is over budget sigh but thanks anyway
He's looking for offers. A Squier body and a mighty mite neck don't come to £275. Offer him £200 and there's a good chance he may accept.
Right guys n gals,I have decided after much experimenting that I just do not get on with Jazz basses now I thought they would be better for my stupid knackered hands but my hands are just to big for those slim necks so I am going back to a P bass, I should hopefully have about £200 to spend when my jazz sells now what I would like to know is what brands of P basses are worth looking at now I know the obvious ones like Squire , Vintage etc will be in that price range but is there anything else worth looking at ? I am going to try the S/H route as obviously I will get a bit more bass for my smallish budget. Now any ideas will be appreciated maybe a brand I have overlooked blah blah blah you know the drill Thanks all
This one looks nice. This guy in Glasgow has sold quite a few nice basses of the years. The pickup is in the normal place but the bridge looks like it's been moved forward compared to the other pictures.

Finally, I can post a NBD thread. Squier VM PJ content. Pic's added

That jazz pickup doesn't look stock. Is it a DiMarzio model J? And that bridge looks suspiciously like a Badass? I have a P and a Jazz bass but really fancy a PJ for the practicality of it. I didn't realise there was a Vintage Modified Squier PJ. Now if there was such a thing as a 5 string VM PJ, I'd buy it right away. -
I love great Acid Jazz like this. I'd love to be in an acid jazz band but I don't think any of the musicians I hang out with are into it. Tomorrow I'm going to have to make some cooler pals.
Well, today I chopped in the Pawn Shop Mustang against a used American Special Jazz Bass. Now, I'm no Jazz man, but the neck was just...wonderful. So now it adorns my favourite P-Bass, and the black-blocks-and-binding J neck from that goes on the P-J. So now I have two near-perfect (for me) Precisions, and one American Special Jazz with a Mexican Precision neck! Pics to follow soon!
I noticed you were looking for a Jazz neck to swap for your MIM Precision neck. Are you still looking? I have a Mighty Mite neck I bought recently to replace the Precision neck on my Jazz, But have now realised I prefer the feel of a P bass neck. It's yours if you want it. It's got an expertly applied Fender logo on it. It's from this guy on ebay and looks like this precision neck (except it's a Jazz of course) http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4d13d3ff96

Of course if you guitarist is using a lot of bass in his sound then it can make the bass guitar sound indistinct and muddy. My guitarist changed his main guitar from a tel to a Gretch semi (which has a lot of low end) and it muddied up the sound bigtime. I knew I was loud enough because when he played a solo I could hear myself fine, then when he went back to rhythm I disappeared. He's gone back to his Tele now and I can hear my bass again.

I saw a gear review of Billy sheehan's bass rig. The graphic on his Hartke amp was shaped like a pyramid. And here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_KY6SiI1gY
Okay, so it came yesterday, bought from Andertons. It's a great sounding bass and I love the pickup configuration. Great range of tones. Looks awesome in the silverburst. But here's the thing.... The neck isn't to my liking. It's a bit thicker than is comfortable for my gimpety hands. When I initially tried one out, I thought, ah, it'll be fine when I drop the action a bit. So I dropped the action just a tad, and it buzzes and flaps horribly. The action is lower, but by no means low. I also hate the stock strings - they're too 'zingy' and a gauge up from ideal. Sadly I'm a novice and don't rightly know what gauge these are, or what to replace them with. All I know is I want them a bit smoother and thinner than the ones that came with it. Given the neck situation, I've half a mind to exchange it. But here's the thing......took the dog a walk, and when I came back in, my Mrs cheerfully announced that she'd given the packaging to her auntie, who very kindly took it to the fooking council tip for disposal. Now, while Andertons have a 30 day exchange policy, they do not accept returns unless they are in the manufacturer's original packaging. So I'm up the bloody creek, sans paddle. My questions are thus: Given my ridiculously vague description of the strings, can anyone recommend a different type of string (smoother - would it be flatwounds?) to try? And would a pro set-up help in any way to lower the action but do so without the buzzy flappiness? Finally, does anyone have a Squier bass box kicking about? Lol Look before you leap. Know a bass inside out before you buy it, especially if buying online. These are the painful lessons I have learned in the last 24 hours. That, and tell your missus that, under pain of death, she must NOT throw out the fecking box your bass came in. I feel like a bloody fool.
Your Troy Sanders is sold with Fender 7250 (045-105) strings. The tension on those strings, from personal experience, can make them feel a bit stiff and not as easy to play as other strings. I recommend something like ernie ball slinkys, or even rotosound swing bass for less tension and better playability. Also learn to set up your own bass. It took me 20 years before I touched the truss on any of my basses and my action was always like a bow and arrow. I learned from youtube that setting up a bass isn't rocket science. Once I learned to set them up properly my playing improved, as all of a sudden they were much easier to play. The point I'm making, is that it's not the neck that you don't like, it's the strings and the setup. Once you get them sorted the bass will sound and play a lot better. Oh and by the way, flatwounds are for sissys

Gigging abroad and days off - what to charge?
gjones replied to mike257's topic in General Discussion
A standard, pro rate, for a musician or Sound engineer/lighting tech, on tour is £350 per day plus £50 per per diem (for expenses). That includes rest days. -
You can't just whack an Ampeg tube head in a black poly bag and hope it'll get to it's destination in one piece, I suppose. I bet it gave the courier a hernia.

Mex P bass scratchplate bought from Andy. Hassle free.

If your're on a stage, Backline will be provided. Just book a plane. Sometimes it's safer to book a seat for your bass as well, as baggage handlers have no respect for musical instruments. If you're playing in a pub or smaller venue, where backline isn't provided, then you'll have to hire a van to lug yourself and your gear over there. Have fun.
To be honest mate, sounds like the whole band is way too loud.
Turn the bass on your amp down as low frequencies suck up a lot of power. And make sure the guitarist has his amp at head height and pointed right at him. As others have already said, you only need to be as loud as the drums. If the guitarist is louder than that he needs to turn down.

Here too http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/bpickguard_precontrol.htm

There's plenty of control plates here, including one for a P bass. http://www.buzzardsbass.com/parts/control-plates.html
No. I'm saying he showed that it doesn't take long, he just did it sloppily because that seems to be his personality.
Yes I've watched some of his videos and they are amusing. He can be a bit slapdash but setting up a bass isn't rocket science. I'm sure the basses he works on are 100% more playable when he gives them back to his customers, than when he received them. And his customers will be the people who own basses but are scared to go anywhere near them with an allen key or a screwdriver.
Some time ago, I went out shopping one day and Kirsty Allsop was at the end of my road filming . She looked very nice. Thanks for listening .
The same thing happened with me, except it was her bald pal filming. I looked everywhere for Kirsty Allsop but couldn't find her
It's a common theme on here - that certainly applies to me, although there seem to be some iron-willed guys above - of gigging happily for years and even decades with one bass and one amp, until joining BC......... ........and then you're doomed
Yes that was my downfall. But having bought and sold so many different basses over the last 3 or 4 years, I have a good idea of what I'm looking for in a bass.
-
I think two basses is the minimum for a gigging bass player. I used to have 5 but have whittled that down to 2. One is my main bass and the other is the 'just in case' bass.

The last time I went to a Church service, the Rev looked like Robert De Niro. He had a beard and ponytail and wore a black leather jacket. He just appeared on the stage for about a minute, at the beginning (which had a huge PA system on it) and then the band, who were like a Christian version of the manic street preachers, went rocking into their set. At the end everybody got a hug and went home. It wasn't like it is in 'songs of praise'.
There's a select few speaking sense here but come guys, I thought EVERYONE on this forum is a MUSICIAN. Clearly not...
Most of the people on this forum expect to get paid for the work they do but don't expect to have to pay for other peoples work. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Which is either corporate homogenized sh*t or amateur crap which the artists would have difficulty giving away.

Science? Marketing? Or just a load of old Bollock?
gjones replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Knocking a bit of wood with a hammer is not very scientific, that's true, but from my own experience pairing different necks with different bodies makes a big difference to the sound. A Geddy Lee bass, fitted with a baseball bat neck, won't sound like a Geddy Lee anymore (I know because I've done it)..
