I've been reading the story of how that album was recorded. In that David Byrne and Brian Eno would try to do the bass themselves, and Tine would be bought in to re-record the bassline. Are there any soul ballads with a really subtle touch on the bass, but where what's played and how it's played is just perfect?
This one. The bass line is simple but perfect for the song. Played by David Hood I believe.

The most expensive strap locks on the planet
gjones replied to itsmedunc's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Yes - for £9.98 each. If I remember rightly from my eBay trading days, this is a trick whereby increasing the price beyond what anyone would pay allows you to keep a long-standing listing going if you're temporarily out of stock. Pulling the listing and re-listing it again would lose the valuable search engine advantages that have been accrued on that particular URL, from eBay and from Google.
I thought the guy who listed it might have had a stutter. -
Do you have a link?
As a car mechanic, one gets paid for the 100 hours. When a car goes on to win rallies, or get sold for thousands as a collector's item, the mechanic has still been paid. If the car goes to the scrap heap the week after, the mechanic has still been paid. I don't hold with the notion that "if it becomes a hit, I become rich." An hour's work is an hour's work, and deserves appropriate recompense. Any more, in my book, is profiteering. I doubt if my notions would meet with popular approval, more so on a music forum, so Tin Pan Alley can (probably...) sleep easy tonight. I still don't see how these huge sums can be justified in the hallowed name of 'artistry'. Is that clearer..? I've no qualms with expansion, or debate on the subject, as long as it's considered 'in scope' here, or in a dedicated thread. Agreement on all fronts will be difficult, I'm guessing...
So if a company's designers design some technology.......a phone a computer, a Jumbo Jet perhaps? It's ok for another company to reverse engineer that bit of technology, build a copy and sell it to enrich themselves at the expense of the original company? I'm not so sure.
I disagree. Copeland and Summers' styles are too distinctive.
And I'm sure they would both 100% agree with you
So should an artist get a cut of the entrance money from everyone who comes to see an exhibition of their work at a gallery?
Recently a system was implemented, whereby an artist gets a cut of the profits made every time a painting, of theirs, is sold for a profit. Seems fair if musicians, writers, film makers and actors get royalties. http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2005/apr/07/arts.artsnews1

I was reading his autobiography, the other day, and he mentions something about how they figured out a system of sharing royalties, even though the vast majority of songs were written by him (have you heard the Andy Summers and Stewart Copelands songs on Police albums? They're pretty awful). The Police were 100% Gordon Sumner, and the other two might as well be just hired hands. Anyway they just got paid a shitload of cash for their recent tour (net revenue $340 million), so hopefully they'll be able to afford their own Italian castles now.

A 6 string bass perfect for beginners?

Having played a truly orrible, grungy, beat up 70's Jazz Bass recently, I much prefer the more hygienic modern fake versions without the grime. Not too keen on the sunburst ones but do like the Fender, Fiesta Red, Jazz Bass.

Give the guy credit but I'm not a big fan of Britney Spears or Pink. It's not just the quality of a song that get's it to No1, it's the millions spent on the marketing campaign and the massive hype as well. The best doesn't always get to the top. I think Simon Cowell would agree.

Songs with amazing bass lines/riffs suggestions???

Hit me with your rhythm stick is sure to impress. And there's not even any snapping or popping. http://youtu.be/0WGVgfjnLqc -
You know, if this guy was a guitarist, people would just think his behavior was perfectly normal. Just sayin.....
I had the Mibass 550 Mark 1. I liked the sound of it and loved the eq options (which they have now removed), but mine couldn't punch its way out of a paper bag. As soon as I wanted some heft, it just sighed and sloped off into a corner. It may have been the particular sample I had, but I thought it worth mentioning, as I expect the power stage is the same on Version 2.0.
I do believe I now own your old MiBass 550 Stevie . I find it plenty loud enough (although I do put it through a 4 ohm cab). I sold an Ashdown ABM 500 to buy the MiBass, and it's at least as loud as that. Supposedly the main reason why Ashdown brought out the new version, is because people got confused by the semi parametric EQ on the old version. Us bassists like our EQ nice and simple, apparently.

I'd go with a Jazz bass with a John East retro pre amp in it (which slots right into control cavity with no soldering required). When I had mine there were very few sounds I couldn't get. Search for John East retro on basschat and you'll find a lot of people that agree with me.

snark tuners are great for bass. Pretty cheap too.
Aye. But that one didn't sell. The sale was ended by the seller (lost or broken). I was looking for ones that had sold, but then again, you can never be too sure.
Actually I know the story of that one. It was picked up on gumtree by a basschatter for £150 (by another clueless seller) and put up for auction on ebay the very next day for £665. I don't know if he still has it or not as it's not listed on his profile any longer.

I think they are worth around about the same as a any good MIJ Bass. A Geddy goes for about £450, which is a top class bass. Why would a JV Squier go for any more. But there are 'collectors' out there who will pay over the odds for an early 80's Squier. As these auctions (and sales on basschat testify to). Maybe they have owned them in the past and know something I don't.
The way I see it - she will relist the bass with a high starting price or a high reserve, it won't sell, then some music shop or trader will contact her with a £350-400 offer, will buy it and then display it in their shop for £700.
Do you really think it's worth £700? I'll send her a message right away 'Whatever you do don't sell it for less than £700 Lucy!'.

Here you go. It will be re-listed, possibly after a cleanup and a restringing. Did you decide to pull it because of the low bidding? Or did you get an a decent offer from elsewhere you couldn't turn down? It's a very nice bass and a bit of TLC will turn it into an instrument somebody will be proud of. Cheers Gareth

In places like that I recommend you get the drummer to play with canes and the rest of the band lower their volume to the reduced level of the drummer. I also make sure my bass amp is off the stage, maybe on a table or chair, and as near to ear level as possible (which stops the sound getting too boomy, as the amp isn't coupling with a hollow stage and makes it easier to hear). Of course many drummers hate playing with canes. But just tell them the practice will do them the world of good (And if they still make a fuss just repeatedly hit them with a cricket bat until they do what they're told).
