So, ye may call me mad, but I have a major sweet spot for my Fleabass! The sound through my EBS, with mids boosted is sweet, and, it's FUN to play! Anyhoo, I was playing a gig befpre Christmas, aaaaannnnnd someone stood on the cable, as I was moving around, and there was a 'ca-CHUNK'. The body, surrounding the jack socket, cracked, and basically, is kind of shagged! I didn't realize how thin the wood was around there. Any suggestions/ideas? I do love the bass, for the reasons I mentioned. Maybe perspex to cover the top side of the bass?
How about installing a Stratocaster style input. You'd just need to make the hole a little bigger and drill a couple of holes for the screws like this . http://axeblaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/5input.jpg

The distance between pickup and strings makes a big difference to the sound and output of your bass. Use this as an opportunity to experiment with different heights. I personally recommend having the pickup as high as possible but not so high that the string or your fingers hit off it while playing. Also make sure that the output is even across the strings (i.e. Adjusting the pickup height so the pick up is considerably closer to the E string, will mean the E and A strings will sound much louder than the D and G strings and result in an unbalanced sound).
Well this is the thing - the nut seems like it may need filed down. I'm no expert, but the action seems very high there. I'm terrified to touch the truss rod, and don't have the tools to file down the nut. I would rather a pro did the first set up but as I say, skinto....so that's out. I'm scared I make it worse or damage it and cost myself more money in the long run. Watched some videos on setting up the bass but I'm only confident enough to tweak the saddles.
Tweak that truss rod. It's easy. Do it a quarter turn at a time. The tighter the truss gets the straighter the neck will end up and the lower the action will be. When you loosen the truss rod it puts a bow in the neck, and your action gets higher. The trick is never to use too much force and overtighten the truss rod. As long as you follow that rule, your bass will be ok. You can then fine tune your action, via the saddles at the bridge, if need be.

Bargain Fender TV Bassman Fifteen? or just me???
Yep, that's the one! It sits in the middle of my living room, gets a lot of love and admiration from visitors. It was already scuffed when I got it, I might try to give it a clean now that I've seen how nice they look new. (Any ideas on how to remove scuff marks from tweed?)
I got it from GAK with those scuffs on it. I assumed it was a demonstrator. They took about £50 off the asking price. I tried to get the marks off with methylated spirit. and it helped a little bit. When Kelso bought it I also gave him a cover for it. Hopefully he used it and it didn't get too many further bumps and thumps. But those tweed Fender amps do tend to mark very easily. -
I have one of these, and I love it, I play through it every day - that's a ridiculous price for a brand new one! I think I paid a £100 more for mine and it wasn't new. To be honest I'm surprised these never became more popular, they sound super good. Possibly originally too expensive and way too heavy for regular gigging, but the 15 especially just has something special about it.
I have a feeling you ended up with mine if you bought from Kelso on Basschat. I'm glad it get's played everyday......sniff -
lovely tone but dig that cats moves! le freak get down tonight

That bassist can dance too! -
Check out Andy Baxter's site for a general idea of the prices you will pay http://www.andybaxterbass.com/

Even though you're new to playing bass, your idea about buying a used bass (whether it's 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's) is a good one. Mainly because they will hold their secondhand value, if nothing else. I own a late 70's P bass that I've had for 30 years and it's a good un. But be aware there's plenty of dogs out there (and I've played some horrors), so I recommend you try any bass you decide to buy, before parting with your cash.

Good deal. They were £700 when new. I used to own one. I bought it after seeing the Ed Friedland video review of it. He said it had a neo speaker in it which made it very light for it's size. He lied! I loved it but it did weigh the same as a small planet, with just one small handle, and was difficult to get up 3 flights of stairs to my flat after every gig. So I sold it to pay for a lightweight but very boring TC Electronic amp and cab. I'd love one of the smaller ones with 12" or 10" speakers. They would probably be fine for some of the smaller gigs I do. -
This is about as cheap as it gets. Decent quality according to this review. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/227514-new-bass-day-jd-vintage-1975-review-good/
Look good and probably sound good, but...the spec listings on the site are rubbish and confusing. I can't see a speaker config for the Rumble 500 combo
Probably because they haven't made their minds up whether it'll be a 15" or a 2x10".........or possibly both?
Does anyone have an idea on price and stockists? I have been considering getting an amp for my rehearsal room.
They'll probably be about the same as the present ones. I assume the old models will be going cheap soon.

Head off down to B&Q. Buy a set of allen keys. They won't cost much. One of them will fit the truss. Handy for setting up the saddles on your bass too.
All other combos state that they are Eminence loaded and have 8ohms except for the Rumble 200 that has a very confusing spec. I believe that this specs aren't correct and have lots of errors, not what people would expect from a brand like Fender...
That's great! In the specs they just have 'Speaker 4 ohm'. They must mean that the minimum load for speakers is 4 ohms. That's much better. My Fender TV15 had a 4 ohm speaker fitted and no extension out, which was a big mistake.
-
Only 410 and 115 cabs though... Would be great a 112 combo with the 500W head and a 112 ext cab, just like the Promethean, but with GB quality and reliability and Fender vintage sexy looks
The speakers are 4 ohm so no extension cabs possible unfortunately. Bit dumb that
-
Why oh why didn't they do this a long time ago. I'm sure their rumble amps are fine but they looked like anonymous, boring, black boxes and nothing like the vintage stuff. I bought a Fender TV15 a couple of years ago, mainly because of it's drop dead vintage looks. It sounded good too, but I sold it because it was stupidly heavy with just one plastic handle on the top. The 500 watt version is only 36lbs (but then they said the TV15 would have a neo speaker in it......the one I bought didn't and weighed about the same as a small planet). Now somebody go out and buy one and write a great review, so I can justify buying one

Is this guy straight up.......or is he double bluffing? 62 date on base of the neck but he thinks it's a reissue. It's definitely been about a bit or been artfully distressed by somebody trying to make it look 50 years old. All I know is the guy has had 17 different IDs since 2007. Who needs 17 different IDs unless they're a bit dodgy? http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649

That moment you realise there's no point in trying different basses...
gjones replied to Clarky72's topic in Bass Guitars
I've owned Charvels, Yamahas, Stingrays, Precisions and lots of Jazz Basses. Although I did like them all, they became superfluous once I figured out that a Jazz Bass, with a John East retro pre amp, can do everything I (and probably most other bassists) need a bass to do. Although I do have a soft spot for my scruffy old P bass. -
Try putting your hands together and splaying out your thumb and fingers as far as they'll go without pain. Even after only a few months, you'll see that your fretting hand can stretch further than your plucking hand. By the time you've played for two or three years, you should see a difference of maybe a centimetre. IME that's pretty much where the process stops, i.e. your fretting hand doesn't continue to stretch until you turn into something out of The Fantastic Four, but then (hard to believe) but I'm on the wrong side of ... ahem ... 30.
Hey I checked, and you're right. My left hand has a stretch about an inch wider than my right. I doubt that happened overnight.

This is a very handy comparison between the SansAmp Bass Driver DI and the Behringer BDI 21. The cheapo Behringer sounds great at a fraction of the price of the sansamp. I'm impressed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD0CN4rs8p8

Different strokes for different folks. I don't really get sentimental over gear. I loved my big old Fender TV15, but after less than a year of ownership realised that it was far too big and cumbersome to shift up 3 flights of stairs after every gig, so sold it to finance a lighter weight amp. I still do pine after it but realise it was the sensible thing to do. Over the last 5 years 9 basses and 4 amps have come and gone and I don't regret selling any of them. They were all sold to purchase other gear I needed at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Kvu6Kgp88
