1. The roadworn pickups which are in both the 60s Classic and the roadworn jazz are these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-FENDER-MIM-60s-Jazz-Bass-Bridge-Pickup-0058359000/371011351763?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222006%26algo%3DSIC.FITP%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140107083358%26meid%3D5068024971958078122%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D20140107083358%26rk%3D0%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D300535828848
2.
I have never held a 5 string bass let alone play one. When you picked it up and realised, what was the problem? Could you have just played the top 4 strings, or are they tuned differently to a 4 string? Is the width of the neck a problem if you are not used to it as well? Are there many main differences apart from the extra string?
Well, an example would be, that you have a choice between playing in A on the E string on the 5th fret or the 10th fret on the B string. The decision I made, in a split second, was to ignore the B completely and managed to make my way through the song without anybody in the audience realising that I was freaking out..
3. Really good to hear. Very happy for you. I have an old Precision neck from the early 80s that has a truss that tightens and loosens fine but has no effect on the relief of the neck. Luckily it's 'stuck' in an almost straight position so is still very usable and enables me to get a decent action on it. But it's good to know, that if things don't continue that way, there's a way to get the truss rod working again without breaking the bank.
4. I had a similar thing happen to me. I was asked to get up with the band for a song, and just as the drummer counted the song in I looked down at the neck and went 'FECK, IT'S A FIVE STRING!!!'. I'd never played a fiver before and almost had a panic attack.
5.
Just fancied a change of bass, plus I needed something more suitable for a new project I've just got up and running, better tone IMO, didn't really think too much about the neck, its tone I'm searching for, granted, I could get used to the precision neck in time but for a relatively cheap and easy swap, if I could get something closer to what I'm used to then great
Be aware that changing the neck on your bass will affect the tone. The slimmer the neck the thinner the tone. I've chopped and changed necks many times on my Jazz and Precisions and you tend to get a twangier sound with a slim neck than with a deeper one. So be prepared for a twangier tone from your bass if you fit a slimmer neck. From personally experience, I've found the Mighty Mite necks are great quality for the price but sometimes need a bit of filing on the nuts to get a decent low action.
6. A lot of Macy Gray's stuff is 12 bar blues based. including this, her first hit. http://youtu.be/HHaz1foH1cc
7. I had a slightly later model stingray without the folded horn part. I used to have to turn all the bass down because the speaker farted like an elephant if I didn't. I once played a 5 string through it, at living room sound levels, and the whole amp almost exploded before my eyes when I hit the B. If I still had it, I'd give you £30 to take it to the dump for me
8. 'Hit me with you rhythm stick'
9. They are great, I used to have two, which I sold and now regret bigtime. They go for between £350 and £400. TOTAL BARGAIN!!!
10. I always have a bit of volume in reserve, for the inevitable moment when the guitarist cranks things up.
11. There's some very interesting posts in 'build diaries' on basschat, about this very subject. I've built a few basses from scratch and it's pretty easy really. The difficult bit is the spraying of basses. You can go down the really professional, perfectionist road, using nitro paint like back in the 50s and 60s, and there's plenty of build diaries that go into minute detail about how that's done. Or alternatively you can go down the cheap and cheerful road and use something like Premium Molotow Graffiti paint, which myself and others have used, which is easy to apply, doesn't drip, looks pretty good and won't destroy your lungs if you breath it in (unlike nitro). I recommend checking out what others have done before you start buying paint etc.
12.
Just read on the BBC website that Bowie won best male artist. I have no particular problem with that but it must say something about the state of our young talent at the moment. Guess he's not too popular in Scotland right now though.
He's spent even less time in the UK than Sean Connery.
13. I know the Geddy Lee basses, which are now made in Mexico, have had their tuners upgraded as the 70's style ones they were originally fitted with were not great. The pickups in the Geddy are different too. Not sure what they've replaced them with but I know the Mexican made, roadworn pickups I have in my Jazz are really excellent.
14.
The only thing different is I don't play with the pick so the attack would be different. I play with fingerstyle so it gives a softer warm tone. Maybe I should try using a pick for this song.
Try the pick and chorus pedal, and also try muting the string with the palm of your picking hand as well. It gives a nice thump to the sound. Here's a lesson on how you do that. http://youtu.be/fi051x69UxE
15. A band generator name that just came up that I particularly like is 'Pig Lips'.
16. Take the hassle out of band names......band name generators https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=band+name+generator+pop&oq=band+name+gener&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0l5.9196j0j8&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8#q=band+name+generator
17. That's the thing. What sounds good at bedroom levels or in a shop, may not sound good at band levels. Glad you're happy with your Ibby. I have to say, I'm guilty of having not given much attention Ibanez basses over the years but when I get the chance to play them I'm always pleasantly surprised.
18. I always wondered what the reaction was from the rest of the band when he came up with that bassline. Did they think it was great first time around or did it take a while for them to appreciate it. Because it is incredibly busy and more like something Geddy Lee would have come up with that a bassist in a funky band. I love it and have learned it. But I fear I'll never get to play it, as none of the musicians I play with have a funky bone in their bodies. It definitely separates the boys from the men (or in your case SpaceChick the girls from the women).
19. Mmmmmm.......nice.
20. He's got some nice basses for sale there. A MIJ Mustang and a 70's Jazz too.
21. The old standard Squier Jazzes are great value. Plus VM and Classic vibe Squiers. All well under you target price.
22. I think the standard has a black rim (like mexican standards) around the truss access hole. Affinitys just have a bare wooden access hole.
23. Curtis Mayfield's final album 'New World Order'. A chilled masterpiece.
24. Always make your most important financial decisions while drunk. I know I do.
25.
There was a guy on Talkbass who had a Silver Series J (from '96 IIRC) made from MDF. It seemed a little odd to me as I had thought they were all made of basswood. Then I remembered FujiGen also made the Ibanez Talman - out of MDF.
The routing on that one was not the same as on the Silver Series, which are routed like 62 reissues. There was also a big circular route under the bridge for a grounding wire like modern basses. Silver series basses are grounded, like 62 reissues, with a copper wire strip which comes from under the bridge and connects to a brass plate under the pickup. There's no hole under the bridge on the Silver Series. Which makes me think that the body of that particular bass had probably just been attached to a Silver Series Squier neck at some time after it was sold. Of course I could be wrong?
