If you carry your bass in a hard case, never change your strings and have decades of accumulated gunk clogging up the gears of the machineheads (like my 30 year old P/J) your bass will very rarely go out of tune.

But the new cheaper SUBS, which were manufactured recently and sold for about £300, don't nail the Stingray sound in my opinion (although they may well be nice basses in their own right).

Of course the attention to detail of a top line, luthier, built bass will be second to none. So as an 'object of desire', like a work of art, I can see the attraction.

I bought a retro looking Fender lead a couple of years ago. The first one didn't work. The replacement worked but gave me the muddiest, woolly sound I've ever heard. I chucked it away it was so bad. Is this an issue with curly leads or just, badly manufactured, fender, curly leads?

Lubricate the nut with carbon from a pencil and it may help in the short term.

The other day my brother in law (a guitarist) volunteered to dep on bass, for a local band, and I loaned him my amp. He kept on complaining that up on stage he couldn't hear anything but it sounded great out front. Just goes to show that it's sometimes difficult to be sure how loud you are out front. The only way to do it, is to get a long lead and listen to yourself from a punters viewpoint.

Drat. I bought a set of 64s and thought they were great at capturing that 62 Jazz Bass sound and at a really great price. Hope he manages to sail his boat around the uk..

I've owned a 150 watt Ashdown combo which was loud enough. When I paired it with another ashdown speaker cab it gave a MUCH bigger sound and the whole thing was given a new lease of life and sounded great! My advice is to try the cab with the combo first because it's the easier option. You'll be impressed by the improvement in your sound with all those speakers behind you. You won't need the extra watts the peavey has with all those speakers blasting out.

I have a Jazz with an Allparts P neck. If you've got the cash you can pick and choose the Fender body and neck you want from The Stratosphere on Ebay. I've bought stuff from them before. It's not cheap but it's the real deal. I bought a secondhand bass from the states for £400 and it cost me £95 in duty.

I just bought a can of white and Azure Blue Light (which is as close to Sonic Blue as Molatow do). I'll tell you how I get on.

The Squier has a maple body. So it won't look as pretty close up.

Oh and Rickenbackers - I've never actually played one but can't help but think about style before substance when I see one.

I saw this bass in a local pawnbrokers going for £390. Looks like somebody bought it and immediately whacked it up on Ebay for £699. Now a roadworn, shell pink, Japanese Jazz Bass, going for £390 is probably a little on the high side (considering the headstock looks like it's been chewed by a dog). But putting it up for sale for £699 is the definition of optimism.
