it also depends where your tone control is: the more towards the treble you are, the sooner you hear the distortion.
Cool. It's a nice pedal but more subtle than I was expecting (not a bad thing).

Just tried out my Bass Soul Food tonight and whilst I like it it seems like you have to go past 12 on the drive knob before you really begin to get "noticable" distortion. Does this tally with everyone else's experience?

Short term, once you get a setting you like take a photo of it!

This thread will quickly get bogged down in the semantic definition of "professional". However, answering the question in the spirit in which it was asked: Reliability and versatility. Without those you will be hard pushed to make it work as a career.

Just ordered a soul food. If its rubbish I'll blame you lot, if its good I'm taking all the credit!

Maybe I'm being silly but I wouldn't wear inears unless they had some kind of limiter on them. I've had too many "crazy feedback on stage" incidents to trust that I wouldn't get my eardrums permanently damaged by someone doing something stupid. I'll stick to wearing my (good quality) earplugs and using separate monitors!

Switching between pick/fingers---for a single song
uncle psychosis replied to uncle psychosis's topic in General Discussion
Yeah maybe I misread RhysP with his felt pic suggestion, in which case I apologise for being quite so blunt. I've tried felt picks before, didn't really like them if I'm honest but I'll maybe give it another go. -
Also TC spark boost is a great low gain drive with blend, great price and no low end loss
That's another one on my radar. It does look excellent. No blend though.
May I ask what you find lacking from the sounds on the B3 ?
Nothing, really. I should have explained- my B3 usually lives at home as a practice tool. I don't really want to have to carry it about, I'm trying to get down to as small a setup as possible. A battery powered Soul Food would be easy to just chuck in a gig bag - I don't use any other effects with the band.

The bassmachine had crossed my mind, but from what I've seen from the demos even with the drive all the way down there's still a bit too much dirt (although I do really like the dirty sounds it does---I just don't need that just now). I suspect I need one with a clean blend to get it as subtle as I want. I basically think I'm talking myself into a Soul Food! edit: bah, youtube videos are really annoying. The amount of gain you get seems to wildly vary from demo to demo. Most irritating.

Just gave it a listen, thanks for the heads up. Thought it was interesting but it came dangerously close to implying that compression (of both kinds) is inherently a bad thing, rather than just misuse of compression being a bad thing. They didn't make it clear enough that a high res mp3 is all but indistinguishable from a CD, it's low res that is the real problem.

Thanks guys. I'm capable of soldering but I can't be bothered sourcing all the components myself. Happy to put together kits but can't be faffed buying transistors, resistors etc and making sure I have all the right bits. In a few years when the kids are a bit older I'll probably get into proper DIY pedals but don't have the time just now really.
I assumed it wasn't about trying to get the same sound with both methods, but equalising the volume between fingers and pick so that one isn't louder than the other in the mix? Or have I missed something again?
No, you're right. If I wanted exactly the same sound then I wouldn't bother changing. I like my pick sound. I don't really like my finger style sound if I switch without changing anything. I'm looking for some simple tips. -
Yeah, I saw the Blueberry on Fuzzdog and was intrigued. I wasn't sure whether it was the same as the Bjfe version or the Mad Professor one, though. Reading/listening online suggests the mad prof version is higher gain and not as subtle. I'll maybe contact the Fuzz Dog and ask! Think the Soul Food is still my favourite, just because of the clean blend.

The VT1 was on my shortlist but the size of it and the irritating power requirements put me off to be honest!
Try a felt pick? Not as toppy as a plastic one.
Why would I want to change the tone I'm happy with rather than changing the one with which I'm not? -
Why do they look like they've been lying around in an abattoir ?
Ask Dave Hall! I had one that I loved, but the aesthetics are a bit annoying. I didn't care, but I got fed up with sound guys questioning whether my "homebrew" pedal was going to blow up their gear. Fantastic kit, that's really well made, but the messy paint and scribbled on markings really do it a disservice IMO. I think if you order one direct from him you can ask him not to give it one of those finishes!

One of my favourite bass players. Served the songs perfectly, great grooves, an absolute icon in every way. Legend.
If it's just one song I'd be tempted to do the matching through dynamics and not worry about physically changing EQs, otherwise it's going to be a massive pain in the arse with variable results at best. How is your fingerstyle compared with your pick playing?
Not great to be honest, but its mostly good enough to get me through some 1-5 cowboy numbers I reckon I probably get away with it when the band is chugging away beside me but it sounds pretty crap practicing at home so tips would be welcome all the same! -
Normally in the band I play everything with a pick, but recently we've written some stuff which for lack of a better description is country-rock-esque and would perhaps be better served using fingers. However, if I just jump from pick to fingers without changing anything else then I find the tone a bit...muddy/muffled (??? I hate describing sounds) I guess. Any generic tips for changing from pick to fingers and vice versa? EQ changes (what?), level changes, anything really? First person to turn this into a pick vs fingers argument is waiving their right to complain should I ever meet them in person and deliver the world's most epic wedgie. You have been warned.

On some of our punkier/rockier numbers I sometimes want to add a tiny little bit of grit or grind, not overt distortion, just enough to add *something*. Using my B3 I get a sound that I like by using the Tubescreamer model, with the gain down low and the blend also low so there's only a bit of the distorted effect coming through. Will the EHX Bass Soul Food get close to this kind of sound, or should I be looking elsewhere? Its really hard to find demos of this kind of sound, 99% of youtube demos are people running way more gain than I want to. I quite like the look of the BJFE Blueberry too, but I don't like the price tag at all!

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
uncle psychosis replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
Three. And even then I'm trying to sell one of those. -
The going rate in Scotland seems to be about £25 for an hour. Really exceptional teachers may charge more.

A few years ago I had some lessons from Jennifer Clark and she really helped me out. She was right in Glasgow city centre. http://www.jenclarkmusic.com She occasionally posts on here - her username is Endorka. I notice her website no longer mentions tuition but if she's no longer teaching I bet she can recommend someone.

I still really fancy one of these but just can't face another jazzmaster style bridge like that. They always cause me stress and hassle. I'd want to make it hardtail I reckon.
