1. Love the finish on that. These things are seriously tempting but I have resolved to keep the gas monster at bay!
2. Running a compressor before the octave may help, particularly with the sustained notes. Unfortunately, though, analog octavers tend not to be able to handle polyphony so the chords may have to go.
3. In 2016 there are, effectively, infinite numbers of bass guitars out there. Why settle for an ugly one that plays and sounds nice when you could find a pretty one that sounds and plays nice?
4. Lessons will be worthwhile- you may be doing something that makes it hard on yourself, plus it will give some focus to your practice. Also, the action on your bass- it may be worth the short term hit of sounding a bit crap whilst you get used to it in return for the long term gain of progress. Not all benefits are immediate, unfortunately.
5. Don't care. People get way too precious about this kind of thing.
6.
I'm very very tempted by the JB-75. I've been toying with getting a back up/2nd jazz or p bass and was looking at old Squiers. These HB's are cheaper...as for quality, from what I've seen and heard, the HB's seem very good indeed. I assume you mean from front to back rather than nut width. Is that on the JB-75 or the PB50?
Front to back. It's a pb50.
7. I've got one, easily the equal of a squier or similar. Proper chunky neck though.
8. How long a loop time do you need? Do you need to be able to add multiple loops or is one enough? If multiple loops, do you need to be able to delete loops but keep the others playing?
9. Let's not forget that the original stereotype of the band playing behind chicken wire is an American one. Not sure where you guys are gigging to drunken violent mobs but it's not a scene that I recognise in the slightest.
10. The Beatles were game changing in many ways but that doesn't mean they should be on a pedestal, immune from criticism. They churned out some utter drivel in places---Maxwell's Silver Hammer, anyone?---and got up to some right pretentious nonsense from time to time. I "wasn't there" but I get their importance. I also wasn't there when Bach was doing his thing but I get that too. Doesn't mean I listen to either particularly often. Other things are more exciting to me.
11. One possibility for the pickup feedback problem is that the pickup has gone microphonic. I suspect this is unlikely and it was actually caused by the other problems you were experiencing but it may be worth checking out.
12.
I can see why some of you chose this stay home option. It's less work. I say if you don't like gigging your really not in this. Blue
I guess the Beatles weren't "in this" after 1966 either? Your trolling has become as predictable as it is tedious.
13.
What..? And lose all of that invaluable 'mojo'..? Surely 'original strings' on a historic instrument would vastly increase its perceived worth..? No..? OK then, maybe I'll change mine one day. What about the tax disc, then..? Should that be original, too, to retain the 'original' epithet..? A rocker cover gasket..? An exhaust system..? A broom handle..? What possible 'value' could originality for its own sake have..? I can understand with hand-wound p/us, or the original nitro finish, but pots..? Do they have any impact at all on the sound, comparing old ones to new..? I'd say not. Caps, now, that's different. Bumblebees or nothing..! (Well, OK; original Russian oil-filled paper and wax, for vintage tone...). A vintage valve amp with old, exploding filter caps is just a paperweight if it can't be safely plugged in. How to replace those caps, and still retain the 'Reeves' blue blob..? Why should one even bother, except as a museum piece..?
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic but capacitor type/construction has zero effect on tone. Yes, sometimes instruments need parts replaced but you should bear in mind that collectors value things that do not necessarily make rational sense.
14. My wife made me a shirt that says "aim low, play bass" on it :-)
15.
Has it? Was going to pass mine on to a friend, but no chance now!
Yes. Along with a whole other bunch of digitech pedals. http://digitech.com/en/products/bad-monkey I saw some comments from a digitech employee on another forum that implied that many of the Digitech pedals would reappear under the DOD badge.
16. The Bad Monkey is basically a Tube Screamer with a bass control so there are about a million similar pedals. Annoyingly the Bad Monkey (in its current form) has recently been discontinued so prices have risen slightly.
17. There will be other suggestions but check out the EHX Bass Soul Food.
18. I met Nile Rodgers (I will never tire of those four little words) and he was an absolute gent.
19. Normally I'd be insanely jealous but I spent the day in the studio recording a new song with the rest of the band :-)
20. The fees on postage happened because too many people were taking the piss by charging £1 for an item and £99 shipping in order to avoid paying final value fees. You can thank these chancers for screwing the rest of us over.
21. Perhaps the sellers desire to avoid the hassle of selling it directly outweighs their need to avoid paying commission.
22. Not a band I like but I do like the fact that they seem quite willing to take the piss out of themselves. Too many bands of that stature have zero sense of humour.
23. I've barely listened to Chris Squire because Yes are completely unlistenable in my opinion. So Entwhistle wins by default.
24. I had the Caline, never tried it on bass but I really liked it on guitar. For £20 its well worth a punt.
25.
The Drake Music Project does similar - even providing single finger or blink controlled instruments to disabled kids.
Friends of mine have a company that makes an instrument designed for the disabled. It's really awesome. I want one myself! http://skoogmusic.com
