1.
http://acscustom.com/uk/ Pricey, but end of.
Aarg, I'd genuine meant to write "without going for full acs custom" in my original post!
 2. folks I have some etymotic er-20s which are great for practice and gigs etc but I'd like a second pair for wearing more discreetly - like when at work or taking the kids to soft play (my local one is like an echo chamber). It's very obvious you are wearing the er-20 and they are quite easy to knock out because of how far they protrude. I bought some Docs Pro Plugs which appealed because they were transparent, low profile, and didn't need to be inserted into the ear canal (which is uncomfy after a while). Unfortunately they don't fit me properly and so they don't work. Anyone have any recommendations for more discreet plugs?
 3. GLX BLM-1 Bass Limiter. I think this is a clone--of the Boss LMB-3. Sounds good but I don't need a limiter. Built like a tank.Velcro on the bottom. £18 posted
 4. Hiscox are great for customer service. I emailed them to ask if it were possible to buy more padding for a case and a few days later a whole wad of it arrived on my doorstep free of charge!
 5. If the noise stops when you touch the bridge/controls then the guitar is properly earthed. Does the sound change if you move around the room/turn around? If so that's further evidence that the problem is exterior interference and not a problem with your kit. The problem is that your body acts as a big antenna and your pickups pick up (!) the resulting noise. When you touch something that's earthed then the noise stops because you've earthed yourself and removed the noise source. If you haven't already then shielding your guitars to try and reduce the interference may help. It may also be worth speaking to the electricians who did the work for you to find out if there is a reason why you are now getting more interference than before. Have you had dimmer switches / strip lights installed? Those are notorious for it.
 6. Ahh, ye olde "young people don't like proper music" discussion. Not had this one for about five minutes. It was nonsense when your grandparents said it about kids listening to the Beatles and it's still nonsense when you say it today. Not liking "70s hard rock and blues" isn't a sign of not knowing what rock is. It's a sign of not liking "70s hard rock and blues". No more, no less. I love lots of rock music, but I'd leave that bar too I'm afraid - blues rock is utterly unlistenable as far as I'm concerned. You'd probably hate lots of the bands I like---doesn't mean that neither of us understands what rock is. Just that we have different taste in music. Do you know when rock'n'roll will actually die? It'll be when kids are listening to music that their parents approve of. Because that will be a clear sign that no one is doing anything new anymore.
 7.
but it's worth mentioning that if you run several Boss pedals on your board, you will lose an appreciable amount of bottom end, noticeable even on a skinny-string!
Interesting. I've never noticed that, or heard it mentioned anywhere else. What I am aware of is that if you run enough Boss pedals you'll typically get a small volume drop which has the effect of making it sound like some treble is missing.
 8.
Cheers for the feedback. I was about to order 50 because a friend wants me to rewire his big board on a fair budget. 50 of those worked out at about £75 and 50 switchcraft worked out at £170
Blimey, that's quite a lot. These ones seem really good---solidly built, and they have the added bonus of having solder connections for both signal and shield (some cheaper ones need you to solder directly to the case for the shield). They also have a little plastic "cover" to help protect the signal connection from grounding on the outer case. I made up four patch cables using these and some Sommer Spirit XXL cable, every one worked first time. I haven't any experience of other pancake jacks but these ones will do me absolutely fine.
 9. I made up some patch cables with those hicon ones over the weekend - very straightforward, highly recommended.
 10.
Dear deirde , I mean bass chat ,How many is to many basses ,I'm upto eight ,granted two are in bits for restoration ,couple nice yams and the others I can't even remember half of them , I just buy them and don't even play them ,do i need counciling or something
Joking aside, if you don't play them and you don't have any other good reason to keep hold of them (sentimental value, or you have something that's rocking-horse-poo rare and you're keeping it as an investment) then just get rid of them. The fact that you can't even remember what they are half the time definitely makes me think you should get rid. It'll bring in funds and save space for something you would actually use.
 11.
At the risk of derailing the thread with a potentially stupid question: could one string these with lighter strings and turn it into one of these elusive baritone guitars one occasionally hears about? I.e., stringing it BEADF#B (or even ADGCEA, I guess), but with the longer scale length giving better tension that one might get by doing the same to a normal six-string guitar?
You could definitely do that and I'm sure quite a few people have. My baritone guitar has a 28" scale length and the squier bass VI has 30" so they're pretty close really. I think the hardest part would be making sure your baritone strings were long enough. I use Elixir Nanoweb baritone strings and I'm not sure they would be quite long enough to fit on a tuners-in-line 30" instrument like the Bass VI. If I ever buy a Bass VI I'll almost certainly do this (I think I'd find a "Baritone" VI more useful than a "Bass" VI).
 12. Nice work. Warwick should do more solid colour finishes. That looks much nicer than the usual coffee tables
 13.
GAS is a funny thing... I very nearly bought a black/maple Precision last week. But I stopped myself when I realised I've actualy been cutting down and selling things I don't need Good on you for not succumbing! I'm moving to a much bigger place in a couple of months. I'm a little worried about what might happened there I'm trying to rationalise my "collection" and just make sure I have the instruments I really enjoy playing and keeping them in great condition (not so much cosmetically, but in terms of the way they play and sound). I have a new Maruszczyk in order that might just be the end of bass buying for quite some time
To be honest I've even considered selling my backup bass---a yamaha BB414---because I haven't played it in over 6 months. I still like looking at pretty basses on the internet but on the whole I haven't been seriously tempted to buy anything in ages. I even managed to say no to some of the Thomann Deko madness, I just don't see the point in buying a cheapy when I have a much, much better bass to use. I have been gassing a bit for guitars though---I want a G&L to match my bass---and have been a bit naughty with the pedal buying recently. So I've not gone completely cold turkey
 14. No, never did :-( I've basically stopped gassing for basses since I bought my G&L. I don't have enough space or enough playing opportunities to try to justify any more!
 15. DSRs. If you buy online you can inspect them in whatever setting you choose. If you don't like them, send them back.
 16. You may be interested in the new line6 helix. Not cheap, mind.
 17. Lots of people like the "pancake" jacks such as the Hicon J63MA05 for patch cables. Other brands make similar low profile ones. I've just ordered some from Thomann and they should get delivered today. I'll report back when I actually try to use them to make some cables.
 18.
I wasn't going to quote the entire thread. It's there to read. I had assumed you were using sarcasm in that quote. This thread serves as another real world example of exactly the points you were refuting. There are drummers and guitarists and bands who play too loudly and are seeming unaware of their volume.
And I did not at any time suggest that "these people do not exist any more". What I said was that there weren't nearly so many of them as you were claiming. Not the same thing at all.
 19.
Hmmm.
The sentence you quoted and the suggestion that you were "told in no uncertain terms that guitarists like this don't exist anymore" are in absolutely no way equivalent. Still, if it makes you happy...
 20. To the OP---there's not much you can do, beyond asking the drummer to change his ways. Not being able to play the songs at an acceptable volume is no better than not being able to play the songs in time. To be blunt, if you go out in public like this then the rest of the band are just as culpable as the drummer is---unless you can find a technological solution (which seems unlikely) then either he changes or one of you walks.
 21.
Funnily enough on a thread last month I was told in no uncertain terms that this kind of drummer (and guitarist) no longer exist. .
No, you weren't. Nice attempt at revisionism though.
 22.
'Last Caress' by the Misfits probably wouldn't be the most appropriate choice at a wedding - or any social function for that matter... (great song though).
I was at a wedding recently and once the DJ had finished the bride and groom cued up their own play list on their ipod. Last Caress went down a storm!
 23.
When I loaded up the mobile version on my iPhone, this morning, there were loads of sold out Dekos listed.
I'm not convinced that whats on the mobile version of the site actually reflects what they've had. There's regularly things that are "sold out" that have never appeared on the desktop version from what I can see.
 24.
. Though, it's been a while since we saw anything really surprising. Where are the Thunderbird dekos or the Semi-Hollow dekos?
I've got a few bits and bobs that I want to order from Thomann, but since I'm in no rush I thought I'd wait and see if any interesting dekos turned up (if you're paying the postage anyway then they're even more of a cheap deal). There's been nothing of interest that I've seen for about a week now.
