Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
uncle psychosis replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Should be fine. AFAICS from my own experience and the discussion on the other forum linked to in this thread, the problem is simply a slightly misaligned bridge which doesn't allow for even string spacing due to the position of the intonation and height adjustment screws. I hadn't even noticed there was a problem until I re-strung it, and the guitarist in The Terrortones who used it during our recent recording session didn't comment at all on the irregular string spacing issue.
Well, its here... Cosmetically its in excellent condition, but it needs some setting up playing wise. Any note below the 5th fret is choking out (on every string). Its bad enough that I can't actually sound the open 3rd/4th strings. I measured the relief by capo-ing at the first fret and fretting at the 20th---when I do this there is no relief at all so I assume the neck is convex. What do you folks recommend? Tweaking the truss rod and going from there? Or something else? -
In a seemingly suicidal attempt to loose business, dropbox has decided to stop supporting apple users who still operate older operating systems, or pre intel mac users as we're know. ...is it just dropbox naively shooting themselves in the foot? There are other options after all...
Suicidal? Shooting themselves in the foot? I realise this is irritating for you but pre-Intel Macs are probably less than 0.5% of their clientbase. Even Apple have dropped support for hardware that old. There have been five major versions of OSX since then. http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0 http://www.netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=11&qpaf=&qpcustom=Mac+OS+X+10.5&qpcustomb=0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems

I am no expert on compression but personally I would never spend that kind of money on a compressor without metering, unless I was buying it because I wanted a really squashy "effecty" compression that would be easy to hear. Dialing in subtle compression without metering is a task I personally find impossible.

If you're there for a while buy something (probably second hand) and then sell it when you leave. Most gear is a lot cheaper in the US than it is in Europe. -
Been playing for 2 years and definitely wish that I had had some lessons but no one around here.
Jennifer Clark in Glasgow is an excellent bass tutor. She is a member here but I haven't seen her online for a while. Her username is Endorka or her website is here: http://www.jenclarkmusic.com/bass-guitar-double-tuition-lessons-glasgow.shtml I had some lessons with her a few years ago that really helped me out. -
I think you're discovering the reason why lots of bassists use clean blends when using distortion/overdrive, especially when using pedals that are voiced for guitars instead of basses. You'll probably find that it works OK once you've set it up at gigging volume.
They've sold out, so you must have had one of the last ones.
Lets hope that doesn't mean I get a dog Can absolutely guarantee that a telecaster or les paul goldtop will appear now after me making rash promises about not buying anything else for a while -
Just got back from my mate's where we were writing, I used his TRB1006 and absolutely loved it, what an instrument. He mentioned he didn't get on with the neck, so might see if I can persuade him to sell it to me at some point
I had a TRB1005 and the sound was incredible but the neck was just too big for me. Such a shame because it sounded great. -
Ha ha! I think when you hear you might change your mind.
Look forward to hearing it. How did the HB Baritone hold up?

Looks great. Is the neck as much of a handful as it looks?
Ha! That's how it happens. How many garages in this country are used to keep a car in? Most are full of junk, especially if there is no attic or basement space. New houses that come with a garage often are too small to keep any kind of car in - they're just crap-huts built very cheaply so that the house can be sold 'with garage' and the price bumped up accordingly. My old mum and dad moved to a new-build house and my dad made much of the fact that the house came with a garage - he could get his car in there (VW Golf) no problem, but the garage wasn't wide enough to open the driver's door to get out! So the car lives on the drive and the garage is full of junk...
The last time I lived in a house with a garage the car insurance company wanted to charge a higher premium for parking it in the garage than for leaving it on the drive. So strangely enough we parked the car on the drive and just used the garage for storage

In a worrying development twice this week I've had a Deko in my Thomann basket and twice I've not bought it. Once for a PJ and then for that T-bird last night. Maybe this means I'm finally developing a healthier relationship with GAS? -

Compressors that run on batteries - options?
uncle psychosis replied to CamdenRob's topic in Effects
I would continue to use ovnilab to pick a compressor you do like the sound/look of and then google the spec to find out if it takes batteries. A boring answer, perhaps, but probably a sensible one. -
Its staggering to see just how many supposedly professional or semi-professional musicians have an utterly lax attitude to PLI and basic safety checks like PAT. Be thankful that driving instructors and restaurateurs take themselves more seriously as professionals. Want to be treated like a pro? Then behave like one, get your insurance sorted out and your gear checked.
Well I think I know what has given the Baritone guitar its deko status. I restrung it with D'Addario Medium gauge baritone strings (14-68) which has made a big improvement in the playability at the bottom end although for my tastes I'd be happier with an even heavier low B. However fitting the new strings has shown that it is impossible to get even string spacing with the bridge that is currently fitted, as the height and intimation screws get in the way of the ideal positions for the stings. Looking at the Eastwood version, I see that they have a more conventional Tune-o-matic style bridge rather than the Jaguar style that this Harley Benton sports. However Tune-o-matic bridges are fixed radius so I'm going to need one that matches the radius of the HB fingerboard. There's no specs given on either the Thomann site or for the Eastwood model, so how do I measure the fingerboard radius to ensure I get the correct replacement bridge?
Here is some info about modding the bridge on these: http://thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/38132/ngd-mosrite-style-baritone-deko -

I would have definitely bought the TBird if we'd seen it. if another one comes up I'd love to snag it. One of you guys can have it once I'm done with it---so long as you don't mind cleaning it up a bit once my wife beats me to death with it...
