Tried to do a search but there are so many mentions of "DI" on here that its hard. I have a voucher for Thomann that needs spent and I have half a mind to get a DI box---either for practicing at home via my mixer (so I can use headphones etc) or as a backup for gigs. Any recommendations at the cheaper end of the market? Both the Samson S-Direct and the Art Xdirect look pretty decent. http://www.thomann.de/gb/samson_sdirect_aktive_dibox.htm http://www.thomann.de/gb/art_xdirect.htm

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'

To answer my own question, yes they still do vouchers for reviews. Reviewed €60 worth of stuff, got €30 voucher in return. Top work! -
EMGs ordered. Time to upset an entire forum...
All done and sounding amazing. Very happy indeed!
Looks great! Not seen you over at "the other place" recently. No more guitaring? -

Does anyone know if Thomann still do vouchers for reviews? -
Some people will tell you that having a second pickup will affect the tone, even if that pickup is totally disconnected electronically, because the magnetic field from it will affect the vibration of the strings. Whether or not you think that that would make any meaningful difference is probably best decided by an angry four hundred page thread.

In my opinion "solid" could only be seen as an insult if you're either massively insecure or you have a chip on your shoulder about something. I'd be very happy to be called solid. Similarly reliable, steady, and all the other synonyms.

The first Rage Against The Machine album (the self-titled one) is the best starting point. Every track is a killer.
How do you feel about left handed pianos?
To be blunt - they strike me as particularly pointless. At least with basses the two hands have different functions, on piano both hands have to do exactly the same things.
Que?
You don't get left handed violins. You do get left handed guitars. That confuses me.

I find the idea of "left handed" instruments a bit odd. You don't get left handed flutes, clarinets, cellos, pianos, etc (well, you get the odd one here and there as a novelty but they're exceedingly rare). Not knocking left handers but genuinely not sure why basses and guitars are an exception.

Looking for a good quality aftermarket hard-case for my bass

Hiscox, but you won't be fitting pedals in one. -
If DJs aren't musicians then neither are conductors...

Lovely bass but, nope, I just can't live with...

... The price, usually. -
I've only got two basses, and one only ever gets played if the first one has a problem (not happened yet...)

Its all diminishing returns, isn't it? Lets face it, with 60-odd years of manufacturing know-how, in 2015 its almost impossible to buy a really bad bass guitar anymore. Certainly, once you get over £300 (£200?) almost everything will be decently made, sound good, stay in tune, and be completely giggable. Bass guitars that cost ten times that price will (or should) be exceedingly well made, sound great, stay in tune, and be completely giggable. The difference is In the details---the aesthetic, the feel, the nuance of the sound, etc. For me, I've never found a bass that would justify spending more than £1k on it. Its a personal decision. Do the differences in the details matter to you more than the price differential?
-
You don't need a car to take a giggable rig to a gig. Gig bag on back, lightweight combo or small cab in one hand, bag with everything else you need in other hand. I've done it. Plus, as a bass player if there's a pa you don't "need" backline. DI box (ideally with Preamp) and you're fine.

DJs have done far more innovating in the last 30 years than any jazz artists have. And I say that as someone who likes jazz. These threads make me sad. If I posted a similar thread about how blues rock was a load of old crap that wasn't proper music it would be locked inside of about three minutes.

Bass is not my first instrument so I already came to it knowing a lot of musical theory. As far as bass guitar is concerned I'm 95% self taught but by far the most progress I've ever made was when I had half a dozen lessens with a great teacher (Jennifer Clark from Glasgow, who occasionally posts on here under the name Endorka. Hope you're well Jen). She really helped me sort out my hand position and solved a lot of problems I'd had for years in the space of weeks.

Thanks folks. Reckon at £3.30 delivered I'll try the 3M clears and see how I get on. Cheers!
I have a pair of these. At first I felt like I couldn't get a proper fit/they didn't do much in the way of noise reduction but I actually find them super comfy and I never have ringing in my ears after a rehearsal so they're doing the job for me. Fairly discreet too.
A pair of these...what? ;-)
It might be worth trying a different size of Doc's Pro Plugs. If you print this sizing transparency you can find the best match to your own ear.
I did that before ordering the ones I have! :-(
http://acscustom.com/uk/ Pricey, but end of.
Aarg, I'd genuine meant to write "without going for full acs custom" in my original post!

folks I have some etymotic er-20s which are great for practice and gigs etc but I'd like a second pair for wearing more discreetly - like when at work or taking the kids to soft play (my local one is like an echo chamber). It's very obvious you are wearing the er-20 and they are quite easy to knock out because of how far they protrude. I bought some Docs Pro Plugs which appealed because they were transparent, low profile, and didn't need to be inserted into the ear canal (which is uncomfy after a while). Unfortunately they don't fit me properly and so they don't work. Anyone have any recommendations for more discreet plugs?
