1. Great band Gentle Giant. Remeber them (well most of them) as Simon Dupree and the big sound.
2. Keep up the private practice and one day.....your singer will have one beer too many at a gig and you'll save the day. In the words of Rick Wakeman. Good luck is only when preparation meets opportunity. Go for it.
3. Maybe you're just being slighlty more open to other types of music and, at the same time, developing a style that's really you.
4. If you're happy with what you play, how you play it, and it gets you gigs, why fix it if it isn't broken. Although, there will obviously be a strong argument for improving if you feel the need to move on from whatever level you are at.
5.
So, 30 hours to go. I've worked out most of the songs - 60's covers - beatles, stones, move, kinks, searchers, roy orbison, etc. Now got to learn them and practise them. Assume it's ok to have a music stand, just for reminders? I'm sure I used to have skin on my plucking fingers ( yes, plucking ) And I used to be able to feel the fretting ones. Any tips on protecting the plucking ones - plasters ?
If I get a cut or split on a finger, I always dip the tips in Superglue. Comes off by the end of the evening and doesn't really affect what I do. So, you could give them a dab before the gig. If it does wear off too soon, at least you've had the benefit for the first set.
6. In order of preference The Rippingtons ,Family, Kool & the gang and Tony McAlpine's band (Maximum security days)
7. I think you'd have more scope tone-wise with a 2x10 cab or combo as opposed to a 1x15 but it's all down to taste. In your price range there's loads to choose from. Ashdown combos seem to very popular and do a good job. Peaveys are well worth the money and ultra reliable. Loads secondhand floating about. charic is right about go for 300 watts as you can always turn it down in a pub but your lost if you need more. Try to avoid Behringer as they have a low resale value if you want a change and usually get slated although I have no experience of them. Line 6 is another good option (I'm not on commission) Top of your budget would also get you one of the smaller Eden heads and a cheap cab. So, also look at the Nemesis range. I just picked up an N250 combo on ebay (never been used) for £130. Okay it's a 1x15 but great for small venues and rehearsals.
8. I once bought a guitar because it was the only musical instrument at a boot-sale and sort of felt I had to.
9. Enjoy your gig and best of luck. If it's a payer, you can go to the pictures, buy 10 fags, have fish and chips on the way home and STILL have your bus fare just like I remember.
10. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ENGLISH-STATUS-STEIN...=item19bfef5204 I reckon he's got the model and the previous owner's price a bit mixed up too.
11. Keep all my guitars and basses in one location with a cheap dehumidifier on, set to 50%. Never had a problem.
12.
I have a dilemma you can all help me with. I want to form a tribute band to make loads of money and stay in hotels in Dubai but I can't afford any new gear so the question is, which bands have a bass player who uses a Wal fretless and has a big enough following to guarantee loads of gigs. I tried a Brand X tribute but it went nowhere. PS I look like Rolf Harris
You could just start playing anything and then ask the audience.... "Do you know what is yet?"
13. Sorry if you've all seen this before but I hadn't. Spinal Tap on..Jazz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wscZhvj_lH4
14.
I am getting together with 3 members of my very first band to do 3 surprise gigs (private parties) as a sort of support act for the main band. We haven’t played together for many, many years and two of the new members (rhythm guitar and drums) of this venture, although competent musicians, are young guys who haven’t gigged before. So my question is this, can you suggest about 12 songs that are fun and easyish to play, usually go down a storm and that most age ranges (16 - 60) will have heard of? We want to play melodic rock, so obviously no death metal but not too poppy (sp?) either. We are just at the talking/jamming stage at the moment, the two young guys are both nervous and excited. I realize this is a bit of a long winded question but any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers, Nick.
Assuming you have no keyboards, you could try a few like (as it's all age groups) Born to be wild Whiskey in the jar Another brick in the wall (if you have 2 guitarists) Message of love Rock & roll Breaking the law Summer of 69 Best of luck
15.
EIther that or the music that stretches the bass player is too hard for the guitarist and drummer to pull off!! Give the audience what you assume they want, I say.
I'd agree with that if my old drummer didn't come on here for a nose around. Oh, bugger.
16. A bright magenta Vester 4 string. (copy of a Bass Collection which are copies of Tune) Absolutely unplayable. Took it back to the shop same day and Mr "I'll show off my slap technique to all the novices" picked it up, played 4 notes and told his mate to put it in the back and let me choose another bass. A used Hohner Jack. Great bass.
17. I use two basses at gigs. A jazz 4 and a BN5. I don't run the BN5 passive mode so I have the Jazz plugged into an Aphex Exciter. Hitting the switch saves me resetting any EQ on the amp.
18. Thanks to everyone who answered. Will pass on info. Cheers all

20.
It's blue... you've just halved its value right there! If he's putting it up for sale on here I'd suggest finding the nearest comparable bass that has sold on eBay or Basschat recently and then sticking on £100; that gives room to drop the price if it doesn't get snapped up. Alternatively he could put it up for what he paid for it, even if that means he has to later reduce his price... if he gets swamped with buyers he can do what others have done and pull the sale then advertise it for more. I would imagine that if they can't give an accurate idea over on a Status dedicated site you'll struggle to get a better idea here because it'll all be guess work and supposition.
Probably right on all counts. Thanks for taking the time.
nice bit o'wood on the right there
Beat me to it, nicer than mine.
22.
MB1. Posted in wrong area....You could try contacting Rob Green at Status or post a picture of it!
It's in "Bass guitars" too but I thought more chatters would notice here. There is a not very good pic in the other thread. If the mods feel it's best deleted here then that's fine, I'll leave it in the other section. Thanks for the advice.
23.
Quite a rare beast this one. I would say that the value would be around £800 given it's a graphite through neck model. Wooden neck series ones go for around £400 to £500, and bolt on graphite necks around £600. This is approximate and depends on the condition and market forces... Wil
Thanks, I'll pass that on.
24. Friend of mine is selling his Status as he's changed to guitar. He has no idea of a fair and resonable price to ask as he can't find any info and has nothing to compare. He contacted the Statii site for advice and had one reply from some guy who says it's only worth such and such but he'd be interested. (Alarm bells) This is the info from the warranty card. It is cased, with all the original case candy and documentation, NOT a bolt on, in nearly 10/10 condition after 18 years of having one owner from new. I say nearly 10/10 as it is after all 18 years old but looks new. As far as I'm aware, the Series 1 is not the same as an S1 but what do I know? Maybe one of you knows better. Model; series 1 headed ( 4 string) Blue sunburst serial no; 1418 Date of completion; 22/10/92 Facing wood ; ash Finish; Polyester Circuit ; stack Pickups; Hyperactive J / J. Mould finish; Woven Graphite Any help appreciated.
