2.
I've just finished five weeks' worth of professional pantomime at the Sheffield Lyceum theatre & it's suddenly dawned on me that the daily 120 mile round trip to Sheffield I've been doing since forever & perpetual life in a dark orchestra pit is now at an end and I'm going back to my old life tomorrow morning, instrumental teaching in schools as well as my other professional playing commitments. It's a sort of weird feeling, as I've been doing nothing else but getting up and going to the theatre & coming back to sleep for the last few weeks. (Weather permitting!) The panto was excellent & although Toyah Willcox was the big name, Damian Williams (the new guy on "Are you smarter than a ten year old?") kept us on our toes and laughing our heads off for the whole run as the dame, "Nurse Nellie." The whole crew from Sheffield Theatres and Evolution productions were excellent, apart from the constant problems we had with the sound engineers, but that's to be expected when you put your sound into the hands of incompetent morons, I suppose. The playing new year is looking rosy with a lot of shows in the diary, sixty big band jobs leading to a tv series already booked & a repeat booking for the same band on next year's production at the Lyceum, Peter Pan. Has anyone else got an exciting bass-playing year coming up? Rich.
Back as house bass after standing aside for someone else who it seems is always too busy to go to the venue, Got a couple of rehearsals this week and next week in the studio to do a six track demo for one of the bands. Apart from that, looking forward to a couple of slices of pate' on toast in about 10 minutes. So, pretty much the same as you.

 5. Don't know a best bass shop as I usually buy off mates, ebay or the last time, from the States. Worst? (don't think it's fair to name them) but it's in a sleepy little Norflok town. The boss makes a point of playing every bass the punters would like to try and proceeds to slap at a zillion miles an hour, thus putting off "novices and some intermediates" with his "see what I can do" attitude.
 6. G & L is worth a look for that budget too.
 7.
My lost prophets gig experience was similar. At the last song of the night, the singer dived into the crowd, and someone nicked his shoes (bear in mind it was in Norwich! ) so he got back on stage, said "You don't nick people's shoes! (isn't it)" in a heavy welsh accent then stormed off and played no encores. Pansies.
It would only happen in Norwich as they're the only other ones with six toes.
 8. Blues bass can get slated a bit by musos as easy and boring, until you hear someone like Tommy Shannon or Roscoe Beck doing it. It is without doubt a great place to start as the lick library comes up so often in other genres of music. I spent 3 years in a blues band here on guitar and then swapped with the bassplayer as he fancied playing guitar again after 20 years. At first, I thought I'd made a mistake but then realised it could be as exciting as I wanted it to be. It seemed to lift the band a bit too as I was obviously playing differently to the previous bassplayer. Not necessarily better, just different. It encouraged one or two of them to play different stuff too. Especially the keyboard player. It doesn't have to be just "donk da donk da donk da donk"

I assume it was taken just before the start of the Cradle of filth medley?
 11. This one has distinct advantages. He hits the lead singer in the face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X3qnTr_KD4...AF6&index=7
 12.
Yes, indeedy! Ancient git here would like to give it a try, but I'm a bit puzzled as to how to go about it. Is there any way to practice the manoeuvre? Do you have to start small and work up, maybe hang a medium-sized banana round your neck on a bit of string?
I'm going to start by putting strap-locks on the OLP today. Hoping I don't have to dig out a satin shirt with a big sticky-up collar. That may be counter-productive.
 13.
I assume we mean like as in this rather understated performance. Ahem!
Yup, just like that but I seem to remember Vai doing it the other way round ie, headstock first. Still any way works for me. Thanks for the link. I think I need a light bass or a cheap guitar to practice with. I've also seen the two guitarists out of Poison do a crossing in mid-air swap. That's cool too. I'll have a word with our guitarist, Butter-fingers du bois.
 14.
There was a youtube thing on here the other week where a bass player tried it at a gig and the bass flew off and crashed onto the floor. It was hilarious. I can't find it though.
I don't want to hear that. I'm gonna go for this. At 58 years old (soon) I need to get some stage antics back in the rock band set. It's either this, or learing to Moonwalk and we don't do Billy Jean.
 15.
Guilty. I did it a few times with my Fender Jazz a few years ago. I don't do it anymore.
Don't say it like you're embarrassed. I bet it went down a storm. Out here in France it would probably be seen as the coolest thing ever as they're about 20 years behind. I was sort of hoping for a few tips as to what type of strap you had and method to avoid ruining a bass or burning my neck. I have a wireless system which I imagine I'd need.
 16. Hi, from La Creuse. Nice bass (and stonework)
 17. Anyone on here ever done, or tried, the flipping round the neck guitar or bass swingy thing like Steve Vai?
 18. I don't play with any bands that write their own songs so I guess if we're just doing covers that I should really just learn the correct lines but often don't. Sometimes I feel that I'd like to play songs differently if I feel that the line would improve the song for us or even make it easier for me as I cover most male lead vocals. Having said that, I'm always appreciative of any constructive criticism and am always prepared to listen to other suggestions. I'm not precious, or Victor Wooten (who I suspect is still open to learning) so what others suggest could potentially, be a far better option to what I've played. I do get annoyed with band members that are not open to discussion about what they play. IMO, you don't even need to be a musician to figure out if something is not quite suitable. But some I've come across (mainly, no, in fact always drummers) who think that because they've owned a kit for 20 years, no-one has any right to talk about their playing or sound. Our guitarist is trying to organise a recording session at his studio for our function band demo but in true form, after speaking to the drummer about how he (the guitarist) would like to record the drums, the old "who does he think he is" reared it's ugly head. Bloody politics.
 19. I never learned any theory and look where it got me.
 20. I have an OLP (first model) and it's instant Bernard Edwards. It cost me €100
 21. The Madness version of "It must be love" great fun, great song. Just thought of the other one that I get right into. Lido Shuffle.
 22. Not really that modern but Hush (Kula Shaker version) is a great crowd pleaser. So are.... Take me to the river Mony Mony (Billy Idol version) Vertigo Times like these All my life Message in a bottle Roxanne Kiss All the small things Basket case

 24.
they had a trussart steelcaster bass at bassday uk 09, i didn't get chance to sit with it, but i've fancied one for a while.
I've never tried one either. It's just something I reckon I'd buy if I won the lottery and hope it played as great as it looks.
 25.
i must be the loan bass player of gurnsey
And probably the richest on Basschat if you live there.
