1. Not often at all when playing. But singing!!! I end up standing there like a lemon as the intro goes round a third time.
2. I fancy buying another guitar that's becoming available shortly so need to clear a few bits out. This started out by me buying a body from a luthier here who'd just started supplying his own bodies. I then got a clone Tele neck off french ebay. I decided to be a bit different and added a Strat bridge (that works) and a pair of Epiphone Alnico V pick-ups (new) These were fitted by the luthier. It looks great and leaving any labour aside, I'm not likely to get my money back but hey-ho, it was an adventure. The headstock decal was added by the luthier and it also carries a Fender California neck plate just to complete the look. THIS IS NOT A GENUINE TELECASTER but plays, looks and feels superb. Can't really see in the pics but fingerboard is nicely figured. I can give anyone buying, a padded gig bag and could get the guitar to the UK next week. The bits alone stand me in 310 Euros but in reality I know it's probably only worth about £275. (Hope so anyway) The whole thing stands me in excess of 400 Euros. It is more or less pristine and it's only issue (with me anyway) is the pick-guard was over cut at the neck joint by about 1.5mm. Cheers for looking.
3. Sorry, thought I'd get involved. Below is the answer from BC Rich about 20 minutes ago. Hi Keith, That was a Handcrafted Mockingbird Standard - gloss black in the pic you attached. I'm not sure of the year. He also used a white Handcrafted Eagle Standard in the movie with reflective tape applied to the body. Not sure of the year on that one either but I did see it for sale by him on Ebay a few years ago . TK So, I imagine if they don't know all the facts, you're on a loser to get all the info.
4. Sold one here in France last year and got £499 for it. Not bad nick and played lovely but as usual, everything finds it's correct price due to bidding and who's looking for one at that time. I'd say £495 - £595 for yours.
5. Don't try and make an RB as there's a lot more to it than a few bits. Graphite rods in the neck, offset pole pieces on the pickups, the bridge and the neck profile all add up to the sound and playabilty. Save up and get a real one. Had one from 97 to last year and regret selling.
6. Personally, I like Marcus Miller's playing but I'm not a fan of this particular vid either as I think Edgar Winter does a better job with this song. Your original brief it seems was to check out Marcus Miller. There's plenty of other stuff of his that you may like. I've met some players in the past that because they hate one track from whichever band, they tend to tar the whole discography with the same brush. Similar to those who say EVERYTHING by Miles Davis for example, MUST be great because it's by him. I'm sure if he were still alive he'd be the first to admit he'd played and recorded some sh*t in his lifetime. Give Marcus Miller another chance and check out some other stuff like Bubinga5's vid posting about "Run for cover" Still may not be for you, then fair enough.
7.
Anything by Bernard Purdie
Or Lenny white.
8. I know this should really be in "How was your gig last night" but I feel it's more allied to playing bass. Got in about 45 mins ago from a gig. There were about 150 people there and it was an informal dinner type jobby. With that many in the audience over here, you'd usually find about 4 - 6 musos and you'll end up in the occaisional jam/free for all. Usually mind numbingly slow blues but not tonight. I had the pleasure of having to play 3 songs I knew (in my head) but had never actually got around to playing before. I'd really forgotten how great they were. Scottish girl said she wanted a go at singing. She could do it. Up on the roof, Will you still love me tomorrow and You got a friend. So, a serious King / Goffin fan. Not difficult to busk but what great numbers. Sorry to sound like a 57 year old but they don't write them like that any more.
9. Blimey, no-one's mentioned Rush (check out Hemispheres for great examples) or Fish out of water by Chris Squire.
10. +1 for that. Even got my two kids loving this track ten years ago. Seen him do it live twice now. He sometimes plays this as his opening number. Everyone knows it and it's straight into groove city when he kicks it off. Funilly enough, both times I've seen it live, he's dispensed with the intro solo. I suppose he wants to hit you in the face with it. It certainly works. I would think this track is as much responsible for getting people onto bass as anything by Mark King, if you're into funky-jazz.
11. Dispite the quality of the songs and the enjoyment you get from actually playing them, this is a 5% pros and 95% cons situation. You know in your heart already what you really need to do. These people will make your life a misery. Walk away.
12. Maybe it's just what some people want to spend their money on and don't need anybody else to "see the point"
13. Welcome from another oldie, and glad to see you've already had a taste of the compassion and fellowship of other basschatters regarding your bass. It's not hideous at all. (it is really) No it's not. (Is really)
14. Ca c'est tres belle. Tu a achete' neuf?
15. It was Heartwood guitars. The luthier, Steve Smith I believe, was based in Essex near Southend I think. His old partner was called Dan and is still a repairer thereabouts. You could call PMT in Southend for more info as they would have known all about him. Hope that helps.
16. Wood colour.
17. Might be an idea to close this thread now.
18. If you don't mind a six'er and you want to drop by, I can lend you an Aria passive 6. Fab action and for a six, very easy to play with a nice tonal pallette for an inexpensive bass. Got a gig bag too. (And a practice amp) It's here if you want it for the winter.
19. Wow, on the telly. Very nice, accessible song. And performed well by all concerned. Congrats.
20.
come on come on..............this isn't fair, I can't handle all this tension on a monday morning
LEND HIM A KNIFE. LEND HIM A KNIFE.
21.
Thanks for the Zadok reminder "mrcrow". Singing bass in the school concert. Full orchestra & big choir in the Great Hall (posh school in central London). Awesome piece of music and two choked parents in row 14. School founders thanksgiving service in St. Pauls Cathedral. In the choir stalls with the school choir. Wow, I'm here moment. Gentle thunder and echo from the organ. However hard you try, your voice just dissipates out into the ether. Ooo, the chills. April '69. A small pub on the north circular road called "The Cooks Ferry Inn". In a hall only 20 yards long, me and 15 others listening to the original Mott the Hoople. A different kind of thunder. Hooked for life. Balcro.
The Cook's Ferry in. Great venue. Used to go every week, and saw Mott there. Nice memory.
22.
Mint! Who with?
A prog-rock trio I was in aged 21 (as drummer) called "Hard, fast and greasy" Here's the link to the page on the Marmalade skies website that listed the gig. http://www.marmalade-skies.co.uk/sept1971.htm And I think I must have taken too many strange things as I think I put 1973 in the first post. It was 71.
23. 1) Supporting Genesis in 1973. 2) First time I ever Rory saw Gallagher on stage.
24.
Quite. I don't think we need two of them. Continue on the other one.
Bugger, I replied to the other so I'll cut and paste it into this for what it's worth. Seems the mods have already done it.
25. Maybe it's one of those things where people hold the members of a particular band in high regard because they love that band and their music. I see where you're coming from with other players maybe being more technically advanced or having a better groove factor and having a bigger library but maybe you just like their style and chops better. There's no doubt that the man can play bass and given the choice, yes I would rather go and see the Flecktones than the Chilis but that's not just based on the bass player in each band. It's my taste in music. I remember when Oasis first hit the big time, Guigsy, (or however you spell it) appeared on the front cover of bassisit. Not because he was a great bassplayer, but because he was in the biggest band in the world at that time. I wrote in and complained. I guess one good thing came from that in that it maybe encouraged a lot of kids to take up bassplaying. In my opinion, he was absolute sh*te, but right for that band at the time. I guess it's all just personal taste. Nowdays, I tend not to slag off famous players (not that you do) where "I just don't get it" as it's got me into too many arguments in the past.
