1. Wow, on the telly. Very nice, accessible song. And performed well by all concerned. Congrats.
2.
come on come on..............this isn't fair, I can't handle all this tension on a monday morning
LEND HIM A KNIFE. LEND HIM A KNIFE.
3.
Thanks for the Zadok reminder "mrcrow". Singing bass in the school concert. Full orchestra & big choir in the Great Hall (posh school in central London). Awesome piece of music and two choked parents in row 14. School founders thanksgiving service in St. Pauls Cathedral. In the choir stalls with the school choir. Wow, I'm here moment. Gentle thunder and echo from the organ. However hard you try, your voice just dissipates out into the ether. Ooo, the chills. April '69. A small pub on the north circular road called "The Cooks Ferry Inn". In a hall only 20 yards long, me and 15 others listening to the original Mott the Hoople. A different kind of thunder. Hooked for life. Balcro.
The Cook's Ferry in. Great venue. Used to go every week, and saw Mott there. Nice memory.
4.
Mint! Who with?
A prog-rock trio I was in aged 21 (as drummer) called "Hard, fast and greasy" Here's the link to the page on the Marmalade skies website that listed the gig. http://www.marmalade-skies.co.uk/sept1971.htm And I think I must have taken too many strange things as I think I put 1973 in the first post. It was 71.
5. 1) Supporting Genesis in 1973. 2) First time I ever Rory saw Gallagher on stage.
6.
Quite. I don't think we need two of them. Continue on the other one.
Bugger, I replied to the other so I'll cut and paste it into this for what it's worth. Seems the mods have already done it.
7. Maybe it's one of those things where people hold the members of a particular band in high regard because they love that band and their music. I see where you're coming from with other players maybe being more technically advanced or having a better groove factor and having a bigger library but maybe you just like their style and chops better. There's no doubt that the man can play bass and given the choice, yes I would rather go and see the Flecktones than the Chilis but that's not just based on the bass player in each band. It's my taste in music. I remember when Oasis first hit the big time, Guigsy, (or however you spell it) appeared on the front cover of bassisit. Not because he was a great bassplayer, but because he was in the biggest band in the world at that time. I wrote in and complained. I guess one good thing came from that in that it maybe encouraged a lot of kids to take up bassplaying. In my opinion, he was absolute sh*te, but right for that band at the time. I guess it's all just personal taste. Nowdays, I tend not to slag off famous players (not that you do) where "I just don't get it" as it's got me into too many arguments in the past.
8. I've owned two Fender CS jazz basses. The first one, to be honest, I got because of what it said on the headstock and didn't really buy it on it's merits as a bass. I could not get on with it at all. The body was slightly shorter than normal and it it felt as if I was really stretching to play on the 1st fret. It came from PMT in Southend and was bought by a mate of mine. I swapped him an Eden CXC300 combo and my standard USA jazz. Big mistake. Having said that, the non-playability was down to the dimensions of the bass and not the build quality. It was superbly put together and had a fabulous sound. I then got my current one. Also superbly built with no issues whatsoever and with normal dimensions for a jazz, a breeze to play. This one has Sadowsky pups and a badass and apparently was some sort of proto for one of the sig models which never materialized and was just sold off. When I fancy a turn on a 4 string, this is the only bass for me. The build quality is second to none for a Fender. But, in all fairness, it plays no better than my last standard USA jazz which was bought (again from PMT) after trying all 11 USA jazz basses in stock till I found "the one" You could be in bass heaven, you could be dissapointed. It all depends on the actual instrument so as long as you don't buy blind, you should get your dream bass.
9.
"Pretty Vacant".... no messin' about
+1 Same for us too, that's the one that kicks the audience in the nuts.
10. France here, but was Shenfield, then Billericay. Welcome aboard.
11.
Are you sat on top of a LittleMark there?
It's a 103H combo (3 x 10) Same amp though.
12. No story, this pic says it all. Stupid grin, having to sit down. (At this point we were 4 bars into the intro and I should have been around the 9th fret. A little impromptu jazzy blues gig at an Irish pub in Gueret. Free wine and beer for the band.
13.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. It has pretty much confirmed what I thought, but I still have a feeling deep down that I would love to keep it. The current situation leaves me with no choice though, so I've spoken to the Dealer and they are collecting it and refunding me. They asked if I would still be interested if they sorted it out, which obviously I might be. I suppose it really depends on what the exact problem is, so I'll wait and see.
Sounds like the shop is playing fair as you now have both options (refund or fix) so see what they come up with.
14. Play anywhere in France and no matter how small the gig is, you will get a meal and drinks. Money can be sh*te though.
15. Salut lapaju, J'habite en France aussi. (23 La Creuse) Bienvenue a Basschat.
16.
See if you can track down a Fender Roscoe Beck V. They're pretty rare these days, but one would probably tick all your boxes. I sold mine to silverfoxnik (too heavy for me at 11lbs) but I missed it so much that I'm getting another on Sunday ... but just over 9lbs this time.
+1 Great suggestion.
17.
OOOOOO I do like that The F bass take on the J.
Ain't it just. Looks even better in natural.
18. If you're new-ish to bassplaying and have started with a 5 string, stick with it and it'll soon feel like, and become, your first choice of bass. A 4 will seem a doddle after that, assuming you'll want to play a 4 string again.
19.
"Va te faire foutre, putain de merde. C'est totalement ridicule, ca."?
I hope that wasn't aimed at me, but your translation of what we said to the other band. Obviously the Mods don't do the censorship thing in French.
20. Nice list but you forgot this one.
21. To answer all the replies, Yes, I mean ALL the gear except one guitar. Yes, we told them no, or rather, f*** off, you're joking, hence, the disgruntled parents and other family members. Yes, this does actually happen but aparrently only here in France. No wonder we've been at war over the last 1,000 years. William the Conquerer's minstrel probably asked to borrow a lute and it all kicked off. Jeff-row as in Tull or as in the remarkably unfunny "ooh aarrr, ged orf moi trac-der" one?
22. Just the two of us. Bill Withers and Ya mo be there. Michael MacDonald. A very simple number but with another perfect bass line for the song is How long by Ace. Love it, so laid back.
23. Not been in long. Thursday night, great (Rock band) last night, house bass at club playing for what seemed like 20,000 self indulgent blues guitarists and a 13 year old wannabe Angus Young with pushy parents. Tonight, Rock band again but with bad atmosphere from the disgruntled parents of a young-ish band who'd turned up (with the approval of the bar owner) to play for 30 minutes whilst we we eating before our spot. Only problem was, they expected to use ALL our gear with nothing being said or arranged beforehand. Aparrently, it's what they do. They all have equipment but turn up at other people's gigs without their stuff and expect to play. Only high spot of tonight (now yesterday) was that we were so loud that a whole row of liqueurs shook off a shelf in the bar and smashed in the middle of "Lights out in London" ROCK & ROLL. Made it all worthwhile.
24. Go with the flow. It sounds an impossible task but organisation is the key as everybody has already said. Besides, when the course work starts big time, you will be needing something to relax into. All work and no play etc, etc.
25. Hundreds and hundreds, playing wise but when I'm singing, that's another issue completely. I can miss out whole verses without trying too hard.
