1. Zappa for me too. I like Beefheart but I suspect John French does a better job live.
2. Seems to do all the MXR bass DI+ does at a good price!
3. Has anyone ever tried an ultrasonic cleaner? I bet that would work really well and take a fraction of the time. I used to boil, but now soak in meths. Any cleaning process is helped if you have a simple string removal method, like a headless (brilliant) or slotted top-loading bridge. I find the greatest hazard is caused by straightening the curly end for removal. A couple of bend/straighten cycles can stress a string enough to weaken it.
4. Cool rails seemed to be the one getting most love when I looked into it. I actually thought the stock one was fine though. I really enjoyed the bass, I didn't want to pass it on to the person I sourced it for.
5. Phew! My o.c.d. is assuaged
6. Just a quick question, what is the deal with the g string, looks offset on the saddle and the pickup?
7. Bowie's in space....
8. I had a fretless 6, and like Paulhauser above, the benefit is not really possible to realize, it's very hard to intonate chords properly high up. If you think about it, a 24 fret 4 string goes nearly as high as a 21 fret 6er
9. Or a tiny amount of Loctite Threadlocker on the saddle screws.
10. I'd guess white and red joined together. Black to pos, green to ground/neg,earth to ground.
11.
The only way I can get IE to allow use of Quote is to click the reply window to highlight options, then click on the "toggle editing mode" button on the top right of the window to put it into basic mode. Then click on the Quote button. I've also found that unless I'm in basic edit mode a number of letters don't show - I have to type really, really slowly - and sometimes it causes IE to crash. Funnily enough, forums using BB software don't seem to have this problem...
Oh yeah, I was having just the same issues with the slow typing missing letters thing. Well done! Still not sure if it will let me do a link or URL though as all those editing options are greyed out. Can't even put in a grumpy smiley now I take that last bit back!!
12. Someone might even be interested in trying to get the neck working properly too, you never know.
13. I bought the Ashdown ctm15 valve head, which sounds great for guitar. It has a ss pre which can dial in quite a lot of overdrive, but it's driving the power stage where the tone lies. It's loud enough to gig on guitar, and as an experiment I gigged it with bass into 2 12" Barefaced cabs, and, surprisingly, that was fine too, didn't need to put any bass in the p.a. This was a 3 piece in a pub sized room.
14. Yay! Another win for Basschat!
15. Yeah ^^ what he said!!
16. I've seen Youtube clips where the neck (in your case the whole bass) has been clamped strings-off in a forward bow and left for a couple of days to give the rod some help. Apparently can be successful.
17. I just spotted a new preamp on the East website, UNI. Lots more internal settings you can faff about with, including flat or shape option and adjustable "window" for the bass range. Sorry if this is old news...
18. Turns out one of the coils was open circuit, surprising any sound at all got out of that pickup. Rewired it so it is now a single coil at the neck and it sounds fine, just dropped the bridge pickup down to balance the two. So, no great mystery, both roller controls are volumes, not some exotic tone system at all!
19. A piezo bridge instead of magnetic pickups would save a bit of weight too!
20. Having another play with it this afternoon, I'm coming round to thinking the 2 roller controls are volume for each pickup, it's just that the neck pickup is about a quarter of the volume of the bridge and sounds more trebley. This has all of the hallmarks of a humbucker wired out of phase with itself. I had a Shergold bass with a switch that did this, it's a sound I can think of no practical use for. Now to investigate the wiring!!
21. Hi all I'm doing some work on a Maverick bass which has a typical 3 band eq and 2 roller style controls. One is clearly a volume and the other is some kind of tone. Info is quite scarce on these but on site alluded to the evolution volume and tone system. It was all designed in collaboration with Trev Wilkinson, but there is no info on what it actually does. It doesn't seem to be a conventional blend (unless there is an actual fault somewhere!) maybe some weird variable coil tap? Any insight gratefully welcomed. Cheers MBA
22. Agree totally with ^^ I also depends on what your tone/sound goals are and how hard you play. The lower you get the action the more "mwah" sound you get but eventually it kills the sustain and can make the tone thin and reedy.
23. About 2 quid will buy you a European to uk mains adaptor. I'd get one of those until they can sort you the proper one out.
24. Don't suppose by any chance it would fit in a standard 19" rack case, about 3u high? Just thinking outside the box !
