Is it the Spoombung Bass?

It may not be the amplifier section at all, may just be a dry/fractured solder joint from the noise described. Some annular solder fractures can be quite hard to spot, a quick dab with some flux and an iron may well sort things out. This is a very common failure mode for electronic things subject to vibration. Nothing to lose at all.

I think 5 and 6 string necks are stiffer, to cope with the additional load. This could be due to simply more wood in the neck, or dual truss rods on 6ers. If the fours you are comparing them with have reinforcement rods or are quarter sawn, the difference may be less. Anyone who has played a metal-necked bass will agree it has a significant effect on the sound.

I used to use a fretless with foam at the bridge and the tone rolled off a fair bit. I added a blend of the very shortest reverb setting from an Alesis Microverb to give a slight hollowness to the sound. I thought it sounded reasonably close, and would have been even more convincing if I could even remotely play jazz

Arild Anderson is nice, some may find it a bit mellow, but I love ECM records from that era. Green shading in to Blue was the album I was thinking of.

I've used a coarse round file and finished with a half-round needle file. You should be able to get as good a finish as anywhere else on the plate using this method.

I think a lot of small solid state amps do that. I wouldn't overly stress about it.

Velco? Or that foam backed double sided tape. That seems to stick to most plastic very well, in fact can be a bit of a sod to remove.

I was aware of the tune Birdland, I think it may have been used as a theme tune on the radio or telly. It wasn't until some guy in a music shop showed me how it was played that it made me realize that this bassist had some technique I'd never seen or heard anyone else using before. I'd kind of assumed it was some piccolo bass thing like Stanley Clarke used, not false harmonics. It also made me realize it's very difficult to make it sound any good without a bridge pickup in the mix (I had a Guild B301F at the time)

You may have a good point there, even if he is fretting "correctly" technically, the seated posture may indeed do that style a disservice if the neck is too low and the wrist is too bent upwards. +1 to the change hands at 99

JTUK - In what way do you see 12" speakers as a compromise? I'm not quite sure what aspect you're getting at, but I'm ready to be edumacated!

Well, the room wasn't too big, our drummer played at normal volume, with a small sized kit, only the bass drum miced. It sounded nice and warm and loud enough, and still gave extra noise when I kicked in the overdrive. Using both Midget and super Midget I had the input gain on 0, master on 8 and my (passive) bass on 8 too, just in case any extra was needed as we got louder during the set. Not required. The Shuttle stayed in its bag. All in all a very satisfactory result, better than I was expecting, by quite a bit. #chuffed!

Yeah, we grooved it, and as expected it went down a storm. The great reaction of the audience helped me to not notice the repetitive-Ness. I enjoyed it more than usual.

Playing this tonight, we don't do many covers. I checked out the original to make sure I was on the right track and wasn't missing any clever bits out. Shouldn't have bothered, it's pretty much the same all the way through. Ho hum. Always goes down a storm at this time of year. Time to suck it up I guess. Going to dress as a twisted firestarter. Anyone else dressing up tonight?

I practiced this week with the Ashdown ctm15 and it was loud enough through 2 cabs with me standing right next to them. I'm going to try it at a gig tonight, hopefully get a cab mic'ed. Should I take my Shuttle 6 just in case it doesn't cut it? Will probably have 5 minutes line check to switch if it ain't up to it. Not worth the effort? What are your thoughts?

Maybe the nephew spends a huge amount more time playing?
