  1. This was my experience of the bass boost. Far too much! I didn’t much like the neck either, but I still feel nostalgic for one, but not at the ridulicous prices they now sell for.
  2. Thanks that information is really helpful. So it’s around £870 for an absolute cracker. Do you think HMRC charged to VAT on the delivery or is that VAT plus import duty?
  3. Beautiful looking bass that looks as though the trouble of importing was worthwhile. Can you tell us about the on costs, VAT, import duty, carriers handling charge, postage. I’m looking at one that wants £138 postage which seems outrageous even from Japan.
  4. With regard to my comment of import duty, it is being removed from 1st February 2019 following anEU agreement. Probably need to get in quick before we leave the EU on 29th March2019, assuming that we still do.
  5. From 1st February 2019 the free trade agreement reported below kicks in. It may help to get basses from Japan, but there will still be VAT to pay at 20%. I read/heard that the VAT is assessed on the cost of the product plus the cost of shipping. Anyone know if this is true? The European Parliament gave its consent to the EU’s trade agreement with Japan, the largest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated by the EU. The Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan, approved with 474 votes to 152 with 40 abstentions on Wednesday, will remove almost all custom duties adding up to €1 billion annually for EU companies. It represents a clear stance in support of rules-based, free and fair trade “at a time of serious protectionist challenges” .
  6. There are quite a few on Reverb, but they are all at shops in Japan and therefore you face a hefty import duty and high shipping costs.
  7. Whoops you’re right of course, dah! 😖🤔
  8. I had one some years ago , a 1966 model. When I got it the switch didn’t work, but I got it replaced at the old (and late lamented) Bass Centre in Wapping, and it worked with avengence! The contrast was enormous, the full fat version was totally over powering. Sounds like yours isn’t working.
  9. Is it an optical illusion created by the shape of the pick guard or is the body even more offset than a normal Jazz? Looks great though and Beck is one of the best bass players it’s been my pleasure to watch.
  10. From a 4 string P bass thumper to a multi 6 stringer, who says bassists can’t change!
  11. Use a 5 string and then it’s only a half step down.
  12. I’m sure their great, but they just don’t appeal to me. The Super P and J make me think my eyes have gone funny 😂
  13. When I had a Washburn 5 string acoustic I found it was loudest with Rotosound Black Nylon strings on. Still not loud enough for a pub gig though, even a mandolin drowned it out!
  14. Love the look, especially no scratch plate. I had an ebonal board on a Washburn guitar years ago and it was very nice to play.
  15. Currently for sale a Korean Precision with a serial number indicating Cort factory, 1995. However it does not have the classic elephant ears tuners but enclosed “Y” tuners. Can this be right or a rogue?
  16. I can hardly believe that this Gibson Les Paul Semi hollow bass from the 70’s is for sale in a pawnshop ( Cash Con.......) I’d have thought if you owned one of these and needed to sell it you would put it on BC or Reverb or even eBay, but take it to a pawn shop! They want in excess of 2& a half grand for it so I wonder what they actually gave the seller! The forerunner of the Jack Cassidy, it’s not exactly run of the mill. I’ve only ever seen one before and that was gold.
  17. Thanks. I had a feeling that was where it should go. That presumably should make the hum go away?
  18. I’m sure this is an elementary question but I have never had to deal with the electrics in a bass. Guess I’ve been lucky in the ones I’ve owned over the years. A friend has just given me a very cheap P style bass made by Shine which had been in his shed ( cry of horror from BCs). Rust all over the place, there was actually condensation dripping off it when I took it out of its bag. So I’ve cleaned it up, straightened the neck (which resembled a long bow) and in the process of sorting out the intonation. The problem is when plugged in the a a slight hum, but turn the tone knob to full treble and that hum gets worryingly loud. I’m guessing there is no earth as when I touch the bridge the noise goes away. So I’m pretty certain it needs an earth wire to be attached to the bridge but to what part should it be attached at the other end?
  19. I remember seeing Rick Kemp in Steeleye Span playing one of these and loving the sound of it. Listen to Blackleg Miner - awesome. I then met him and tried his fretless version which was brill. So wanted one but couldn’t afford one.
  20. She was part of the Wrecking Crew and as such played bass on the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Her pick technique is very obvious on God Only Knows. I always thought it strange that she’s a pick player but stuck a great wedge of foam under the strings to dampen the sound down.
  21. If you do buy a bass in the USA you will pay Sales Tax which is different from state to state. However if you get the proper type of receipt you should be able to claim the tax back at the airport before flying.
