I’d look at whatever the current version of a Zoom B3 is. I found that the preloaded effects were just too full on but editing them was incredibly easy, and then it became a very useful bit of kit.

I think he’s currently with Noel Gallagher and yes, is a Fender man.

And people take a pop at Fender……

Apparently Bill Wyman had a similar outlook in the Stones, with Keef or Ronnie holding down the low end.

I think I’d prefer to have the option of studio than in front of thousands of fans, although I can play it easy enough remembering which bit is where flummoxes me when playing it with the band. I play all the right parts but I’m sure they’re not necessarily in the right places.

Definitely, we do I Was Made for Lovin You and there’s a lot of fills/runs in there that might not be expected.

I think B, E, A & G are Dunlop, D is Fender going by the silks. I prefer the feel of the Dunlop’s, though at home practice volumes I can’t tell any difference in the sound. I don’t know why but this bass just seems to sound right with flats whereas every other Precision I’ve put flats on didn’t do it for me - maybe they’re properly played in.

Well in my old band (2014 to present) we built our fan base by going back to basics, gigging all over the country first to build a fan base then extending it to Europe. Funded all our recordings, merchandise and travel from gig fees and merch sales. Ok we weren’t a “big” band but the principle still worked and for three middle aged blokes making shouty music we achieved a fair bit. For bands both prepared to put in some hard graft and not take any money from the pit but invest it back in the band a lot can be done. I wouldn’t say the old ways were gone, though post COVID is a different matter, grass roots will take a while to build up again.

So, new bass day for me, a Fender Precision in black/black/maple. So what’s new I hear you say? Well it’s a five-string Precision, that’s what’s new. I’d seen this on here for a while and although never had a fiver before it’s my preferred brand/model/colour scheme, and as I’m not in a gigging band at present should I join one and then need a fiver it made sense to be prepared. Plus it would have really irritated me if that happened and I’d passed on this one and had to get a fiver that didn’t match the rest of my basses (CDO is a terrible thing, I even have to arrange the letters properly/alphabetically). Here it is, currently strung with flats and they just really work, more than likely I’ll keep them.

Those boomy stages are one of the reasons I used a pre-amp pedal. DI from the pedal so FOH gets the right bass sound (a flat eq Precision would have messed up the sound of our band beyond belief) and I could then use the eq in the amp to compensate for the stage/room for on stage sound.

The knot issue on its own would make me return it. I bought a Player Precision that had a slight (very slight) bulge around the third fret so I took it back. The guys at PMT were happy to take it back though they said they couldn’t notice it. As much of my playing at the time was based around that area of the neck there’s no way I could have kept it, and as such that’s possibly why I was able to notice it.

Is British rock and metal now a cottage industry?
Lozz196 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I’m surprised Frank Carter & Rattlesnakes are at Download, but then I suppose there is an area of crossover between punk & metal. -
There’s a fantastic drum roll in Smash it Up by The Damned that takes the song from to the middle passage, at 1:14

Don’t waste money on a short scale bass, just move further away from your regular sized one.

What I heard of the Metallica/Lady Ga-Ga collaboration sounded pretty good, she has a hellova voice.

Time for amp shopping he says……, Well spoiled for choice methinks, but imo the following all work really well with a Precision: Fender Rumble, Ampeg, Ashdown, Markbass All will do a fantastic job, I’d pick Ashdown due to not only being excellent amps, sound great & super reliable, but both being UK based and their customer service being amongst the best around.

I’ve had basses with things like that, the first time it bothered me for a while but as it didn’t affect playability or sound I learned to live with it. Since then I just put it down as one of those things that in a perfect world wouldn’t happen, but as the world is far from perfect then so what.

REM at The BBC on BBC4 at the moment, had forgotten many of the songs but am really enjoying this. -
I wouldn’t say wound up specifically, I just like idea of having a set list & sticking to it, only doing extra when called for. If a band has 12 songs on their set list and fully intends to do all 12 songs why pretend the last 2 are an encore, to me have the courage to just do 10 and if called back then do the other 2, if not then leave it there. A band can learn from this, more from when they don’t get those calls than from when they do, and a good band will put into practice what they learn from it and get better.
-
I must admit I’ve always like the idea of writing in an encore on the set list but only playing it if the audience ask for it, if they don’t then don’t play it. I think bands should have both the confidence and self awareness to only do encores when it’s clear the audience want them.

The Jazz in the clip sounds great, as does the Ampeg B15 tone. I must admit I’m getting more into just getting some drive/gain on my bass without changing the sound of it, this pedal, expensive as it may be looks like a great way to do that, and with the filters good levels of control.

Great tip chaps, will adopt this on my amps & basses

NBD - Fender Flea Jazz Bass & MusicMan Stingray Classic
Lozz196 replied to Pedro_Mendonca's topic in Bass Guitars
Cor, a Flea Jazz & a Cliff Williams (almost) type Stingray in one day, very extravagantly done, I’m sure we will all approve -
