Anyone used a dB Technologies B-Hype 8 for bass practice?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Amps and Cabs
I ended up getting an Alto TX408, mainly as it was cheaper and Amazon had them. It seems very loud and punchy for something that size. Easily kept up with the band and drummer with volume to spare. Just wish it had more handle options like the db has. -
If you’re playing around with the global EQ on your stomp to suit your in ear sound then surely that’s going to compromise what you’re sending to front of house? Have you some other method of adjusting your in ear mix that won’t affect what’s going to the PA?

It would be cool if he played this or the Scarab again…

Just done a lovely little solo gig at Bar Dos Hermanos in Leicester. Quite a quiet night possibly due to the ghastly weather but it meant I could experiment with more subtle stuff and new tunes rather than competing against a really noisy crowded bar. A girl from the audience asked if I knew Jolene and could she sing it (she was really good too so that worked really nicely). Chucked in a bunch of new stuff too which went down well. And only got slightly soaked loading out. Happy with that. Gear: the usual Simon and Patrick SP6 guitar and soundhole pickup, Allen and Health desk and Mackie SRM350 speakers. Footwear by Clarkes.

I did buy a 100 watt Fender Rumble when I joined a country band. It was definitely loud enough for the quieter type gigs I did with them. I also used it with a blues band, that I would occasionally gig with. Both of those bands had sensible drummers. It was extremely light and easy to cart around and had more than enough output for that type of music. I've got 500 watt heads and a cupboard full of cabs for the bigger gigs, with shed builder drummers and power mad guitarists.

Bought and sold a few, and am always searching/on the lookout for a good ray! You do get the odd nutjob seeing what Specials go for new and assuming their early 00s 2-band is worth 2k used, but generally you'll see standards at £1100-1500 (max) and Specials from £1500-£2000. -

I like reading people's different subjective preferences, makes me question/analyse my own. I don't think it's just a matter of volume per se, rather the EQ balance you want and where there is space in the mix for the bass. 100w is ample in some cases and woefully inadequate in others. Bear in mind that speaker/cab design philosophy changes a lot depending on how much power you have available. The right 15" driver and cab will let you gig a 50w head, but to scale that up even a bit requires a lot of boot space.

I'd be looking for an Aguilar AG4M. I had one in my 95 Stingray and it was the best sounding Stingray I've ever played.

So after a few weeks this is where I am... Got a great preset where I split the signal and gave half going through the fat bass amp and the other half going through the tweed guitar amp. Still finding it generally fiddly, here's some observations... The bass overdrives sound too fizzy for me and lack warmth, need to investigate more. Sometimes I tinker around adding and removing effects and then the pedal switching stops working... E.g I add the wah pedal but somehow it just doesn't work! Quite frustrating. Still need to change the mode so I can use the individual buttons to switch different effects in and out. Using the effects loop is great for my synth pedal. Used this to DI for my last gig, no amp and in-ears. Good sound out the PA sub but again the fizzy overdrive just got annoying after a while. No idea if anyone else noticed but it bothered me a lot

Or a disadvantage, depending on your point of view.

200W is plenty for me (with a 1x12 cab), but I'm playing jazz and if guitarists are present they're going to be playing clean and at a sensible volume.

The only way this mob could be even more bohemian is if they're not actually even French. I certainly wouldn't want to be sharing a bathroom with them in rented accomodation. -
I remember trying an Elf into a Vanderkley 2x10 at a SE Bash a few years ago. It was total and utter crap. To get any form of volume out of it you'd either be red lining it the whole time or using it with an 8x10 which defeats the entire point of such a small amp. Fair enough, coffee shop gig. For anything loud, it wouldn't work at all. Zero headroom.
