Wow! What a fantastic documentary. I was just about to list my double bass for sale when I was transported back to my childhood, when I played violin for the last two years of primary school and the first year of secondary school. When I went up to the "Big School" I was too cool to keep going with all that old fashioned stuff. Despite the efforts of a fantastic music teacher who offered me all kinds of alternatives , including Contrabass/double bass, (too young and stupid to know what this was) I gave up the violin and all that "old fashioned stuff". Now I'm a mature (decrepit) bass player who bought a Thomann 3/4 upright for using in a country/americana band. Since watching this video, (which in 1978 was happening just when I was getting into punk), has rekindled my appreciation of the wide diversity of bass music. Maybe I'll have a wee go at some arco stuff on the Thomann bass before I give up on such a brilliant instrument! Thanks to pete.young for posting this link.

I think the shift in date might make it harder for me to make it but if I can get there I will. BTW my mention to "Dafties" playing my basses in an earlier reply was a reference to numerous people who have come up to me at gigs and said they're bass players and could they try my bass. After my beloved instruments have been dropped and abused by these sort of people I no longer let them "have a shot"! I'm sure the Basschatters who attend Bass-bashes would treat my stuff with care and respect and I would have no problem with anyone having a play on anything I brought to the Bash.

I recently signed up for the £20 membership but every time I try to sign in from my Samsung phone I get locked out. I then receive an email, the first time stating that someone in Northern Ireland had tried three times and then, on another occasion, someone in England had done the same. I used a Hotmail email to sign up to Basschat but should I re register with a Gmail one as I rarely have any spam or problems with that one whereas I get the usual spam and phishing nonsense on the Microsoft Hotmail one? Should I also opt for a computer generated password rather that my own made up one? Cheers, Des

Still don't know if I'm posting on the correct bit of the site but just wanted to say thanks for all the "welcome to the group" replies and to clear up what I meant about playing back to front on my original post. What I was refering to was that despite my being a "leftie" in everything from writing , playing snooker/billiards etc, and just about everything else I did or played, no one thought about telling me that you could get left handed bass guitars or even switching the bass around and stringing the other way up so I went against everything that felt natural and learned to play "normaly" (although it didn't feel that way for a long time!). I now use that as an excuse for any less than perfect lines I play although some people say it still sounds like I'm trying to play the wrong way round most of the time! Cheers , Des

This is the equivalent of blowing into an SM 58 and saying "Is this on?" I hope i'm typing in the right place so I'll keep going and see what happens! I've been playing bass since 1973 when my brother, who played in a folk band, asked me to swap my reed organ for an "ELECTRIC GUITAR" because he needed the keyboard for a couple of tunes. When the guitar arrived it turned out to be an Ibanez short scale bass and a Zenta practice amp and, even though I'm left handed, it was a right hand model and I've been playing back to front ever since! I have played in an assortment of bands since then from working mens social clubs to bands that wrote thier own stuff , rock and blues bands and now am playing in an "Americana" band doing everything from Hank Williams to Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. I've been observing this group from the sidelines for a while and think that its mainly comprised of pretty decent , knowledgegable, and fun types of guys and gals so I've decided to sign up. Hope to continue to enjoy the banter and, despite the saying, "this old dog CAN learn new tricks! Cheers , Des
