I find the technique that works best is to wait until you're not playing any notes. Seems to bypass that problem.😜 Still cheesy as cheesy peas, but to hell with it. If you're playing in 12 bar D you can flip it end-over onto the scroll and play open notes. That was pretty usual business for me for a while. Gotta love an open-note bassline, so subtle. 😁

Un-trimmed strings on guitars. Resulting I. string ends dangling off at eye-poking height. You’re not Tom Morello! Cut them off dammit! -
I'm guessing this wasn't a good change? Really? I'm glad to hear the OC5 works for you, as it does for alot of other players - but I'm surprised it's more immediate, as with it being a digital pedal there's expected processing time that would normally result in some kind of latency (which admittedly was my experience).

I think a lot of this type of discussion depends on what type of learner you are. I’m a visual learner, so for me the shape of the mode or scale on the fretboard ‘locks in’ more easily. It also means that you can overlay any other mode onto the one you’re looking to visualise how you would move from one to another. A useful exercise is to know which mode comes out of the 5th of the one you’re currently on. As a starter, if you just manage to pin down Ionian - Mixolydian - Ionian you’ll pin down a good useful range. I’ve also taken up keys in the last few years as well. I cannot emphasise how much you will improve as a bassist if you start learning keys. It’s transformative. Also, the piano shows modes (in C major) so simply. It also shows you in C maj why a key has the diatonic order of maj, min, min, maj, maj(dom7), min, min(dim)(half dim7) I’ve provided this link elsewhere, it also comes as an app. Well worth working through. Not bass specific. https://www.musictheory.net/lessons Hope that helps.

…Just an update about the fan replacement .. While new fan is sort of quieter on other hands it’s internal parts (bearing system etc) emit different sound when spinning.. Simply said while it is about 5 decibels quieter (used some iphone app to measure db levels before & after) at the end i now can hear more of it’s bearing noise (higher pitch) then the airflow noise if it makes sense. Good experiment but to be honest not really worth taking the outcome into consideration.. So unless the fan is indeed either about to fail or whinging then no point replacing it unless you like to tinker with the stuff.. Btw, the RS Component fan is actually Orion fan..

A rare opportunity to acquire this beautiful bass in good, almost unplayed condition. I purchased it privately in mid 70's, intending to play it in a rock band but moved to folk music and what with one thing and another it has sat unused ever since. Genuine Ricky double truss rod. Some dings from being bumped and a bit of crazing of the varnish on the body due to age. Minimal wear on the frets. Photos taken September 2025. Comes with a basic custom made hard case and I can throw in a RokSac. Prefer to transact in public space, cash payment, will check notes with counterfeit money checker. If buyer needs delivery then it will be at cost, non refundable. Sorry but I've been scammed once and now am more cautious.

I have and use several different ACS plugs and IEMs - I have a custom set for sleeping, and those can sometimes result in me waking up in the night due to one of them causing the ear to hurt. I do think it's probably the nature of shoving relatively inflexible things into your ears that they'll start to ache after a while, as the plugs aren't going to move as much or will move differently to your ears over time. I second the comfort cream recommendation; the only downside for me is the ACS stuff is so expensive. There was a product called 'Auragel' which was perfect, but it seems the company that manufactured it went bust so it's no longer available. On alternative I had recommended to me is Otoferm, but I absolutely hate the smell of it, and it has triggered something like the eczema @MacDaddy mentions above. I'm in the process of trying alternatives still so will report back if I find anything that works.

Help with buzz from Tonerider pickup on Ibanez SRMD200 bass
Obrienp replied to Brim Taika's topic in Bass Guitars
My experience with the two band EQ Ibby preamp is that it is horrible! Far too aggressive and it will amp up any single coil buzz. Shielding always helps with jazz pickups but I reckon it is worth spending about £100 on a Glockenlang two band replacement. It is much more civilised, transparent, has a passive mode, is pre-wired and is pretty well a drop in replacement for the Ibby OEM junk. Otherwise go passive but by the time you have bought 4 decent pots, caps, etc and paid to have them wired up, you will be well on your way to the price of a Glockenlang preamp. Other two band replacement preamps are available of course. -

I've sometimes had an issue when using plugs pushes earwax onto the eardrum and it hurts like hell. Try a couple of drops of olive oil into your ear overnight for 5 days and if that doesn't sort it go and get your ears syringed.

I have used a capo from time to time on a 5 string. The only downside is the thickness of strings, you’ll need a capo with a strong spring, probably not a Shubb.

It may be worth getting your ears checked for eczema. Even if you've never had it, it can occur in later life and in the ear canal.
