    Hi all, I am making a friend's Gear4Music San Francisco semi acoustic bass playable and I have found that the neck shape and pickup poles really need a trapeze tailpiece with ~55mm spacing rather than the supplied 45mm one. The dimensions are pretty much the same as my acoustic bass which is 55mm at the bridge... Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Before I just make one. The bass is a bit of a Friday special, but was bought during lockdown and never got sent back. Cheers Nick

    I think part of the problem is not wanting to necessarily pay for the tooling to create a bespoke bridge for what might (at least in Spector's case) be a niche seller. Dingwall seem to be going great guns so it has made sense to create something. There aren't a lot of off the shelf options for single bridges either and I'm guessing Babicz pricing might price them out of being used more widely as it squeezes the margin just that bit more.

    Thanks @WinterMute! I think it’s because I played Warwick 5-strings for so many years with their tight string spacing. Wasn’t the sound I was ultimately looking for though; which is a particular shame as this bass sounds exactly the way I want but I can’t quite get my hands round it without drastically changing my technique. And of course most Jazz-style 5-stringers have 19mm spacing. My current main 5-string is a Ken Smith Burner which is 17.5mm and much easier for me to get around. I’ll be sad to see this one go though; it sounds amazing

    Cabinet technology not so much, but driver technology for sure. You may be able to greatly increase performance replacing it. I can make recommendations knowing the exact internal dimensions of the cab and port. An 8 ohm cab is best, allowing you to use two should the need arise, although with a 100 watt amp it probably would not.

    I just added a transformer to the preamp so the balanced output is working now too. soundsamples will follow soon now!

    Agreed but it's not just Dingwall who've done this. Spector's fanfret Dimension bass, which is a similar price has similar individual bridge mounts which although not as extreme as the Dingwall offering, aren't as high quality as the Payson or even their own standard bridges.

    Could be. The lead guitarist in one of my bands was struggling with intonation on his PRS. After many visits to the luthier, they decided it was the fret height PRS use combined with his string gauge and the strength of his grip. He went up a string gauge and tried to use a lighter touch. It improved things a lot but occasionally I think we sound a bit chorusy. Nobody else notices but it does make me check my bass tuning a lot.

    ....and while we're at it, given the thread title, it took me quite a long time to find a cab that sounded as good to my ear as my 1990's Peavey 15

    I had the HA3000 before getting the HA5500, preferred the 3000 really as it was so easy to dial mids in with the two knobs.

    I had no idea a factory fretless version even existed! I am having GAS pangs over this, but sadly the one fretless I already own barely gets played. GLWTS!
