It's a superb example of Carol Kaye's bass of choice from 2002. These don't come up too often. Condition is remarkable for the age. It's even got the plastic film on the cavity covers. It's Korean-built and we know they know how to do neck-through properly. The build quality is stunning as is the grain of the ash wings. The neck profile is what I'd call slim modern J. Controls are: Vol, Blend, Treble, Bass. It's been deep cleaned and set up beautifully (med/low) with D'Addario EXL170BT strings. that's a balanced tension set. As per all my rosewood board instruments, it's been treated with Montypresso. Frets are level and polished to 7000 grit. All electronics have been checked and all pots cleaned. New battery fitted today. Truss rod is perfect. It's 4.4kg. I've got proper packaging and am happy to ship insured at buyers expense, which will be about £30. If you're undecided and fancy trying it out, I can usually accommodate a try-out with some notice weekdays or weekends.

It's nice to feel someone understands that situation! His songs are like progressive blues, more than the blues most of us would be familiar with.

That's why I took flats off my Jazz bass. They made it sound too much like my P bass. I don't need 2 basses with that sound. I put NYXL's on the jazz and now, after losing the twang, they have mellowed to a nice warm tone with the hi mids that the P bass doesn't have.

At the very cheap end is a Tanglewood Elfin bass, or Squier do a mini precision bass. I have a Tanglewood Elfin and it’s merely ok, rather than brilliant. It’s something like 26” which is really short for a bass. Cheap and fairly cheerful tho.

D'Addario Chromes work well in a J bass. A little brighter than La Bellas and similar more traditional flats, so they preserve more of the essence of a J and don't make it sound too close to a P in my experience.

I was depping last night, so was the drummer. We have both worked with this band before so it was OK, a few interesting endings though. He is a very good drummer so I enjoyed the night. The band leader was talking about this being his favourite rhythm section, and was threatening to offer us the gig. I know the bass player and would prefer to keep on good terms with him, and I'm not sure I want to be in a Top 40 cover band again. But it's a good reaction. You've got to keep your name and number at the top of their list.

Does Thomann regularly make mistakes these days?
kiat replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
No mistakes from Thomann yet, though a bass gigbag had it's strap fixing tear away from the case and they refunded it in full and didn't want the bag back. Nothing but great experience from them this past year. - Today

Yeah, there is a lot of variety in these pedals, but i just cant get the openness ive heard from others, inc my old HX stomp, just something missing from the top end. No sparkle, even if i boost it all. Playing along to music is fine, so im sure in a band situation I’ll never notice it.

Thanks - yes, it's got the MX serial, so I wasn't thinking it was a Highway but rather if they did some things at the Mexican factory too. It cost me £100; I reckon it's been chucked about a bit. It is a good bass though; I may strip it at some point, but there's a risk as to what the underlying wood looks like.

🙂 In that case, the Spirit. Alternatively, you could go for a (Steinberger Spirit) guitar and learn come complimentary skills.

I'll agree that through IE/headphones there are are lot of amp SIMs that just sound too anaemic or polite. Adding cab SIMs via my recent acquisition of an HX Stomp helps but some the classic bass cab SIMs are truly awful. Simply scrolling without reading what a cab is, has revealed that some choices such as 1x12 'guitar' cabs sound as good as anything that is marked 'bass' and has improved the IE sound. The MS60 does have a couple of cab tweaks which can really help.

Boss are loads of peoples favourites. When they came in in the late 70s, early 80s there was pretty well nothing to touch them and they remained that way for a long time. They came up with the standards for many effects and kind of defined both the size of effects and the controls we expected of them. And even the colours we expected effects to be! I think they are still the reference for what effects are supposed to sound like.

The Blackstar mini bass always looked quite nifty to me: https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Blackstar-Carry-On-Travel-Bass-Guitar-ST-White/5GY5
