  1. Past hour
  2. Radio Africa - Latin Quarter
  3. Worth having a go on one if they get one in?
  4. Mine has maple fretboard and neve preamp. I went for maple as the basses and guitars I’ve preferred seem to have them but I don’t think I’ve got the skills to hear a difference. Pau ferry looks better tho IMO!
  5. Told ya… Just for the bass playing, Oil on Canvas - Japan, Mick Karn shining throughout. Graceland does have some stunning playing though - GAH! 😫
  6. On The Air - Peter Gabriel
  7. One More Once - Michel Camilo (Anthony Jackson).
  8. Heyyyyy Jeff, you’ve got me KS hooked! Many thanks & hope you’re well, (a bass guru & absolute top man with a fabulous collection)
  9. I've accumulated a fair collection of pedals over the last 5 years, but, finding myself going back to the same pedals and changing priorities, I'm putting some of them up for sale. Not looking for any trades unless you have a 3 Leaf Audio mk2 Octabvre you're willing to part with (didn't think so!). All come with the original box and bits. Tracked postage to UK mainland will be £10, unless otherwise stated. Walrus Audio 385 Preamp - £100 An excellent low gain amp-like drive with bass and treble controls. Beetronics FatBee (custom paint job) - £150 Aimed at guitar but a surprisingly nice driven amp sounding pedal. Beetronics Royal Jelly (custom paint job) - £200 Again more aimed at guitarists, but a nice sounding drive and fuzz all in one pedal Free the Tone Black Vehicle (comes with power supply) £250 A great overdrive with bass/treble EQ and boost. The controls over input and output gain mean you've got a lot of control over the boosted tone. EHX Nano POG - £130 The older aesthetic, but a great octave pedal, with octave up and down. FoxRox Octron 3 - £150 A great octaver with octave up and down, and switchable EQ settings for both Old Blood Noise Endeavours Dweller Phaser/Repeater - £150 A really interesting pedal. It can be a straight ahead phaser with blend control (so great for bass), but you can also blend in a delay ("stretch") that responds to the phaser's feedback control. Very cool spacey sounds. Chromatron - £800+£20 postage (comes with Wonderlove box) Posted here some time ago but collating them all into one post for convenience. A legendary filter pedal with lots of control over the filter sound and an effects loop. Spencer has said he is unlikely to build these again because of the expense of the chassis.
  10. Metal Box by PiL. Simple yet inventive playing from Jah Wobble (and, on one track, Keith Levene)
  11. Highly recommend Adam at Southampton Guitar Repairs - based 3 mins off Jct 3 of the M27 https://www.southamptonguitarrepairs.com/
  12. Ok offer stands unless you find another taker🎸
  13. Fun and fantastic. The complete Ray Brown bass part for the tune 'I'm An Old Cowhand (From The Rio Grande)' from the 1957 Rollins recording 'Way Out West'. Sublime swing. That's 800 transcriptions up there now (less than half of the number on Tom Read's site 😃) https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/im-an-olsd-cowhand-from-the-rio-grande-sonny-rollins/
  14. Must be something about that particular desk if headphones work directly because aux outs produce line level which is the standard for routing between different bits of gear (e.g. in a rack) whereas headphone level is a lot higher. There are a few caveats (-10dBV vs +4 dBu variants) but the wikipedia article explains it well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level EDIT - in thinking about this I bet the manufacturers are targetting these small desks towards home studio users and thus build something like this in as a feature so people don't have to buy additional headphone amps. Thus said it makes me a bit scared as high headphone levels running into expensive rack gear has the potential to break things! I probably wouldn't buy this specific mixer if it was indeed doing this. EDIT2 - just downloaded and read the manual because I couldn't quite believe designers would do this, and the aux level is +4 dBu as expected, although the desk does seem to have two separate headphone outs that can monitor the aux mixes so I suspect these are what the IEMs connect to.
  15. And out come the wolves by Rancid Matt Freemans bass is what takes the songs from good to amazing.
  16. I had the Session 4x10 too. The preamp was great. I imagine a 600W class D amp and 4 neo 10" speakers would have made a very tidy proposition as it wasn't a super heavy cabinet.
  17. Hey guys Need a little help, I've got a Kala scout with thunderblack strings. I had fairly even volume across the strings but detuned / retuned recently and the low e is noticeable lower in volume? Any fixes? I'm afraid to restring in case I cause more issues. I've got a set of thunderblacks and a set of Kala flatwounds to go on
  18. As far as I know B&Q only do one grade of hardwood ply. It's usually got one good side and one where the knots and voids are patched on the outer veneer. It's good enough for a speaker that is to be painted or vinyl covered but subject to a bit of splintering if your saw blades are a bit dull. Wickes do a better range of plies, though sadly they have stopped doing their marine ply. Saying that I haven't visited them for a couple of years as I have quite a lot of ply in stock. Mine is currently from a batch Jewsons got in just before covid described as Poplar but actually Chinese sourced and made from two varieties of 'Eucalyptus' only one of which is actually Eucalyptus sp. The thing to understand is that the English names aren't strictly defined, you need the latin names to be sure what you have. So Poplar isn't always Populus sp and neither is Birch always Betula sp. When you are looking at species that grow in China they have no English name, so they can call them what they want. A lot of Russian 'birch' was exported from Kaliningrad so became Baltic birch. You can't even rely upon counting the plies as a test of quality, generally it is quicker and cheaper to fabricate fewer plies but if the wood is poor then they might take thinner plies. It's a bit like choosing a wine on the basis of the dimple in the bottom of the bottle.

  20. I got one for Christmas, but not really got a use for it. I brought the new Valeton GP-50 just before Christmas and also have a GP-5. It seems quite similar to the Valeton stuff. I like the form factor, although not keen on the on/off system.
  21. Just one? Ooh, tough choice. Avoiding solo albums by bass players, probably Paul Simon’s Graceland.* *I will no doubt change my mind as soon as I hit submit reply.
