S'simple! If you record with, say, a single SM58 mic you'll get a single channel of sound, from one perspective. That's M, or mono. If you record with a pair of sm58s, whether crossed over or just a distance apart, you'll get 2 channels, left and right (or A and B) which are two independent mono recordings but with slight differences due to being in different positions. Mathematically speaking, L and R added together are the same as the mono signal. But if you subtract Right from Left, you'll get the difference between the two which is known as S, or side. So it's possible to record, or work in, M and S, which means you can boost or cut the S signal to give bigger or smaller stereo soundstage when converted back to L&R. If you use any stereo or imaging boost software (Ozone has it) that's effectively what it's doing.

Am I invisible? Did I stutter? It's a QUAD coil. I used pictures and everything! Yes, because the two pairs (so that's four then) can only be addressed as individual pairs (in that each pair of coils are joined together inside the pickup then present the each end of that pair as a wire) then it logically becomes a dual "coil" situation, it's more like two units, than two coils. I may be splitting hairs here, but technically correct is the best kind, and I'm a little cross that I've basically been talked over/around in my own effing thread

Love it. Kind of like AI coming and taking the job one has trained a lifetime to master. -
I'd buy a Sandberg TT4 above a Fender.

I expect the Chinese Hofner (Contemporary and Ignition) violin basses outsell the German built ones many, many times over, which couldn't have helped. As an example, out of curiosity I bought a couple of the cheapest Hofner Ignition violins to decide a) whether I liked violins at all, and b) which pickup positions I preferred. I chose the Ignition basses because their construction is a little closer to the hollow body originals, not having the full maple centre block of the Contemporaries. I then very briefly owned a genuine German violin bass, but to be honest, the Ignitions got pretty darn close sound, feel and weight-wise so the German went back and I still have the Ignition. It may get gigged when I need a featherweight shortscale in my old(er) age. It's a shame when anything "iconic" disappears, but such is commerce.

For those who prefer an alternative slant of his on Christmas check out Joys of Christmas from Dancing with Strangers. And his slide work on That Girl of Mine. Great songwriter.

Poly is a pain, heat gun maybe to see what you can get off before taking a sander to it? I have just done some furniture in a lovely oil and wax finish, and I might try and do a guitar using the same kind of finish one day. Got my finished from a company in Devon? https://gilboys.co.uk/collections/beeswax-wood-furniture-polishes -
I’m pretty much a jazz and precision player now, I’ve had so many jazzes from Mexican to custom shop, I know they aren’t new but one of the best ones I’ve got now is the American jazz elite, they are passive and active and are amazing quality, i like them so much that I’m looking for another at the moment in black, it’s just a suggestion but try one out if you can , the American Ultra is another I’d recommend trying

Temptation is a song from the Elvis Costello and The Attractions album Get Happy. The song deliberately borrows from Booker T's Time Is Tight, in keeping with the album's retro soul feel. Temptation.pdf

I see! I was confused because they've still put them in a casing that mimics the look of the 3 blades on the original triple coil.

My parents had this album on cassette when I was growing up, so I've memories of enjoying this one on a lot of car journeys! (First time I've seen the video, mind)

"Pedal board ego death" - love that phrase!! Ah it's not such a bad thing! I think I'm having the same epiphany with a Boss GX10 multifx which, so far seems to be able to do so many things really well, and a number of things well enough (with the one exception so far of synth) that the ensuing pedal board cull is likely going to pay for this new unit multiple times over! And actually very liberating taking just one, albeit very capable, pedal to gigs! -
A little video, not much good but it gives a good idea of what the bass might sound like in better hands!

I'm in the market for a jazz bass. My current bass for everything is a EBMM USA Sterling 4HH - been number 1 bass for last almost 9 years. But I fancy a change. I've owned precisions and find the nut too wide - I have 2 precisions with jazz necks but I fancy a real jazz. I am leaning toward buying new. I don't want Mexican or Indonesian - call me whatever you like but I've decided Japanese or American only So I've narrowed the choices down to: - prerequisite RW boards only MIJ 'Hybrid' II £1,500 ish pros: price, colours, headstock end truss rod adjustment cons: basic bridge, no case only gig bag American Professsional II £1,900 ish pros: slim profile neck (I like that), option of top load or string through bridge, hard case cons: 5 bolt neck (limits choice of replacement necks if required) - not keen on any colour scheme, not keen on the tuners - prefer the large vintage open wheels, American Vintage 66 £2,200 ish pros: love the surf green colour with matching headstock, like binding on the fb, 66voiced pickups, hard case cons: price, never liked the vintage bridge Mod Shop £2,000 ish pros: choice of colours, block inlays available, choice of pickups, same bridge as Professional II with through body stringing and top loading available, hard case cons: no neck binding available, same tuners as Pro II, no matching headstock, 10 week lead time Custom Shop £4,000 ish pros: can have almost any spec you want cons: it'll cost both time (long lead time) and big money I am leaning toward the MIJ Hybrid II in Noir but the Vintage66 in Surf green is also tugging at my strings.... If you were in the market for a NEW Fender jazz, which would you choose and why?

Oh, there's also a phenomenon I can't explain, but I believe it's real enough. When I listen to my crappy tv speakers, while browsing BassChat on my laptop for example, I often look up in surprise, as, when someone in a film plays music over their Hi-Fi, it's easy to hear whether their Hi-Fi is any good. I often comment-in-my-head: "Oh, that's a good system .... but how the Hull can I hear that?" Good+crappy > crappy+crappy, and markedly so. -

Makes me want to put my pristine Revox B291 turntable on, but after 15 years of silence, the capacitors must be a bit dry and the motor may start a fire... No need for a preamp as I did the Studer/Revox mod to turn the internal RIAA preamp on, which is a great plus. Itching a bit...
