Its always gone on. Sponsorship, not necessarily signature instruments, that's a more recent phenomena with mass production making it simple to do a run of 1000 instruments all exactly the same. 

 

Certainly bands sponsored by strings companies, some BassChatters have got free strings for tours etc.

 

I imagine Paul McCartney got given a fair few basses.

Strangely over time, it seems he hasn't reeally had that many - he was given a couple of rickenbackers and a yamaha, the other things he seems to have got himself.

Who cares? Jaco may have been a great player, but he was also known to be, erm, difficult. You wouldn't want him in your band. He'd turn everything into the Jaco show, arrive for gigs off his face and generally be a PITA. It got him killed in the end (you have to be pretty deluded about yourself to think picking a fight with a doorman is a good idea). People like that are best admired from afar.

 

I'm one of those who finds Danny K amusing. I wouldn't pay money for anything he's played and I wouldn't claim he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I like some of what he does. He seems a decent sort. Who cares that he doesn't have "ground-breaking talent"? Few do.

What do I think of him? Not sure tbh; expect he's a decent bloke but haven't watched any of his vids for long enough to comment on his playing. I've heard of him, and we're all discussing him  which I guess means he's winning in this day and age.

I think he's great. And he can play when he shows you.  But he's part of a bigger picture of the way Bass playing with Instagram YouTube AI and music in general is traveling..  and I don't like it.. This ain't a 90's Freddie Washington' groove lessons DVD anymore..

Diversity is good, it’d be sad if all entertainment was middle of the road enough to appeal to everyone.

 

There’s an insane amount of content and entertainment out there which is immediately accessible thanks to the internet. The overwhelming majority has no interest for me either, if I don’t like stuff I just move on, there’s plenty for everyone.

No problem with this; I agree. When I see something 'recommended' by others, I'm sometimes inquisitive enough to have a look, and sometimes I come across some Good Stuff. It still amazes me, however, just how much is Out There that, if one was to put it into a novel or TV story line, would be thought of as too improbable, or too tacky, or just plain ol' nonsense, to be credible. A sign, amongst many, of fast-approaching old age, senility and decrepitude, no doubt; maybe I'm just unlucky in the choices I make when deciding to look at New (to me...) Stuff. No problem, the World spins on. T'is, however, a funny ol' World. Peace.
